This is one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. The whole episode looked and felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! I cried like once every 15 minutes this episode. And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. Tragically today Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤
Having never played the games, I had no idea coming into this show that by episode 3 I would be weeping like a baby over characters I just met. That’s the sign of amazing show production. ❤️
This is even new to us that played the game. Joel and Ellie actually get to see Bill in the game and there's a really badass mission involving him. I really like how the tv show handled the character of Bill. They gave him a happier life in my opinion considering the world they live in.
I played and beat the game. I do not like episode 3. It was so forced. They made an hour and a half episode about 2 men in a relationship, because they knew morons would eat it up due to the whole gay aspect. No I do not hate gay people, but I don't want to be tricked into watching 'Brokeback Mountain' when I sat down to see a post apocalyptic zombie movie. They killed off Bill and Frank which shows their unimportant to the main story and that this episode was simply Agenda driven. Very great game. I liked episode 1 and 2 but will stop watching if I see anymore crap like this going foward. They should've made this a separate movie. No, because the straight audience won't watch, so shove it down our throats, while the agenda hides itself in a zombie show. This is wrong. If this was a straight couple, then everyone would hate it because they would realize that episode 3 hardly progresses the story. Even if it was a straight couple it would still be bad. Yall just think it's adorable because it's gay. Smh
God I loved this episode so much. I had never played the game but understood that the flashbacks were added materiel. This was so unexpected and so amazing. The acting was incredible (never seen Parks & Rec so this was my introduction to Nick Offerman! Murray Bartlett too for that matter.) The writing, pacing and music were on point all the way through. I never expected to cry while watching a TV adaptation of a horror/action video game. They got me good. Rumor has it there is a longer version of this episode. I would love to see it.
Seeing this kind of representation in a big time show and it being done so beautifully made me feel so emotional. I loved it so much and the writing was so good😭
Thanks for mentioning Murray Bartlett . He’s one of my favorite actors. He’s great in White Lotus season 1 and in HBO’s “Looking” which never got enough love.
One absolutely gut wrench that takes a time to realize... While Bill makes sure they both die, he only has the wine from the bottle. Frank has the bottle and the extra. Bill made sure Frank died first so he could take care of his last moments.
Even in the apocalypse, Duke Silver hasn't lost his edge. But overall, a sad yet beautiful episode. It's such a breath of fresh air to see more of these side characters that we didn't really get much in the game. A melancholic ending, for such a beautiful journey. :)
The 80's song that plays at the end of episode 1..the one which we think symbolizes the journey joel and ellie will embark on..turns out that is a mechanism to notify joel of bill's death if he does not reset the counter - takes on a new meaning when you listen to the words of Depeche mode: "i'm taking a ride with my best friend"..he died with frank in his arms..the game was a masterpiece, the show is a different kind of masterpiece, i cannot wait to episode 4
R.I.P. Annie Wersching. You will be missed. Annie voiced Tess in the Last of Video game. She passed away of cancer today at 45. You may know her for her roles in 24, Bosch, Runaways, Timeless, or The Vampire Diaries.
so far it's an a very emotional series you feel for these characters and that's hard to accomplish but when someone dies you feel it and the special effects are beyond amazing great work
It was a beautiful episode, despite the world went to hell around them, they found their little happiness and lived a good life together. Also the infected at the gas station, it felt like he still had some of himself in there, and when saw the knife in Ellie's hand it felt like he was begging her to kill him.
They did Bill and Frank so amazing this episode instead of a sad and hateful Bill to the cruel world that took Frank away by infection. I will be spending my night sobbing to their song and cry myself to sleep thank you very much.
Although Bill and Frank do not interact with Joel and Ellie in the episode, they brought them together through symbolism and points in common in their relationship, in that way this doesn't feel like filler and we don't miss the main characters, that's a very hard thing to do, tell something that in a sense has nothing to do with the main story and still contributes to this. I don't know if they changed a lot from what's in the game, because i don't know all the details, but this was very good
Like you guys, I cried a lot in this episode because my mom has multiple demyelinating sclerosis and she tried to commit suicide twice, she is fine now and is contained but it was very hard for me but it must be more difficult for people who suffer from these disabling diseases which don't have cure and only they understand what it feels like to gradually lose their mobility and things that they could do before and no longer do, and in some cases gradually lose their cognitive functions when you have Alzheimer's or the beginning of it. Also understand that it is a personal decision, even though it hurts a lot, if the person decides to take their own life feeling that they lived a full life and the disease is taking away their identity. Something that happens in life and you don't hear much, I'm happy that they covered it on premium television.
The Nature of Daylight by Max Richter is played in Shutter Island, Arrival, an episode of The Handmaid's Tale - and where main actor Elizabeth Moss via The Handmaid's Tale is also in the music video of the song itself on Richter's music page on YT, and it plays for TLOU for Bill & Frank.
I'm honestly okay that they changed it because this episode was wonderful. The only real criticism I have of it is Bill standing out in the open with a sniper.
That made sense. His proximity traps had them held back so that he could distance kill those who escaped. The fence in front of him was the last line of defense, the raiders didn’t make it to the main fence, that’s how Bill and Frank survived. Add to that, they had resources from Joel and Tess that helped them fortify. Joel told Bill that his current defenses wouldn’t last without the resources they had to offer.
My biggest criticisms are that they laid the romance on a little too thick and fundamentally changed Bill’s character. It felt somewhat out of place for The Last Of Us especially considering Joel and Tess, two main characters who were together for ten years, got zero relationship development and never showed an ounce of affection. Still I would have kept the episode the way it was with one major change: Frank doesn’t tell Bill he’s going to take himself out. They spend one more good day together but it’s just a normal day. Maybe he still requests the special dinner and Bill suspects something deep down but shrugs it off and doesn’t say anything. Then Frank does it while Bill is asleep. Bill is devastated but continues on becoming much more cynical and grouchy. He’s a survivor. He survives. Then Joel and Ellie come to town and it proceeds similar to the game with Bill leading them through the school to get the battery. I think this would have achieved the same effect of the episode while also preserving the story and character from the game (fan service).
@@DoctorSess right but i agree with the writers, there's is no need for Joel Ellie and Bill to meet cuz it doesn't add to the story anymore. Bill's character has already done his job, in fact, a way better job than he did in the game. the three of them fighting the zombies to get some car parts is more fun in the game than in a show. (*game's ending spoiler*) this love and relationship kind of build a foundation for Joel's decision to save Ellie at the end.
The fact that Frank stated that Bill is a coward in the game, but in Episode 3, Bill said that 'he was never afraid before Frank showed up' made it even sadder 😭💔
Video game Bill having a handy gay porno mag in an area of his house and him being very clearly emotional about finding Frank's body are already two big hints of his orientation, and his true feelings about Frank.
@@thespianmask Yes. Thank you. For those who played the game, at least for me,l that is, it was fairly obvious that Bill and Frank were gay and more than "just good buddies". We just didn't get all of this backstory to them and of course, this alternate ending.
The fact this show has an incredible run time for each episode allows them to create feature length beautiful films such as this, never been so moved by a message, this is a beautifully done masterpiece, all who worked on it should be immensely proud 😊
The song that plays during the montage of Bill and Frank getting married - On the Nature of Daylight - was the perfect choice. It heightened the emotional pull flawlessly. I'm not a very sensitive moment, but when the first string of that song started playing, I even found myself tearing up. The writing and acting of this show continues to amaze me. Hopefully, the remaining episodes continue this streak.
It just brings me so so much joy that Bill and Frank got to have such a happy story amidst the horror of the rest of the world. So fucking beautiful!!!
@Late to the Party, 17:21 Craig Mazin didn't exactly say what was wrong with Frank but he did say that he's suffering from either MS or ALS ='( Frank was so alive, ready to do anything, everything. His disease took the wind out of his sails and he can't live like that. His disease makes me think of the Bill's home before Frank. Bill can live with the bear essentials, he doesn't care about having more than he needs, and this explains his first with Frank three years after living together--we already saw Frank noticing the dust on furniture ding lunch. Bill doesn't need to just survive; he wants to live. And in his mind, living with MS or ALS isn't living. I hated what Frank did to Bill, but I get it. I probably couldn't live like that either, not in their world anyway. His condition, likely would have put both him and Bill at risk at some point, and surely he didn't want his condition to be the death of Bill. I was initially surprised that Bill honored his wishes, but all made since when dinner was over--way better than the game's story. If Bill didn't kill himself too, he still could have been the guy we had in the game, and that's what I thought was going to happen, but then he gulped his wine too, and it was clear what he had done. Anyway, another great story. Three stories in and they keep getting better. Nothing else coming out this year is going to beat this writing. Give them their Emmys now.
Yooooo me too! That song is my go to I need a good cry song I play on loop. I was absolutely gutted hearing that song on that scene. That was perfection.
Most adorable post apocalyptic couple ever. Their end was sad but also not so much. They’re some of the very few characters we see get an even somewhat happy ending in these types of stories.
Some bloggers correctly noted that the infection of the general mass of the population was due to flour. In 2003 episode 1, Joel, Sarah and Tommy didn't eat pancakes for breakfast, they refused the neighbors' cookies, and most importantly, Joel forgot to buy a cake for his birthday. It saved their lives except for Sarah.
Straight-up one of my first thoughts after finishing that episode was "man reactors are going to have it ROUGH". Well done ep, lots of changes but ultimately completes the same goal: Originally Bill is framed as an example for Joel of what he can become, an uncaring jaded loner losing his mind, showing what could happen he continues to be an emotional brick wall. In the show however, he is the opposite & shows what can be accomplished IF Joel is able to let people in. Same purpose, different jigsaw pieces.
The show keeps getting better, each episode brings more to the table, not just in action, but amazing story telling, i cried alot too throught the episode, so we're all in the same boat :)
You are the only reactor who took note of the incredible music by Max Richter. 'On the Nature of Daylight' was also featured in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival and for me, this is one music that remained in me when a tragedy took place in my family five years ago. When the music plays in Bill & Frank's final scene, tears that I tried to hold back came flooding like a broken dam. This episode is incredible. It shows love can still be found when the whole world's gone to hell. Thank you for this honest reaction. 🌹
Arrival also had this song at the beginning and end. One of my favourite movies ever and now this series is becoming my favourite tv ever and what better to have this song which hit me so hard ever since I first heard it. This show is amazing
This episode destroyed me - they made it so much better and so much sweeter than the game, which, in turn, also made it so much *worse* in that it hit soooo hard and was so painful lmfaooo. I was an absolute wreck. So beautiful to see a sort of "opposite" to game Bill... game Bill was almost like a warning to Joel about what kind of person you become when you close yourself off to other people, but show Bill serves as inspiration for Joel, to show him how wonderful life can be when you open yourself up to love. ....aaaand I'm crying again. Thanks you two for another insanely quick reaction!!
Love your analysis of game Bill vs show Bill and their affect on Joel! Inspiration is so much more powerful than fear. As much as we love the gameplay during Bill's moments in the game, this showed us a whole new aspect of an apocalypse. The love that flourishes. It will not last forever, but it's ok as long as you cherished the love while you had it.
Thanks, Robert! Thanks, Vanessa! 💎 Top-tier television of any genre... they crafted a love story for the ages amidst a chaotic world. We are experiencing a rare and true treasure of a show. #LateToTheParty #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO
As someone who has suffered a stroke, my guess is that is what happened to Frank because I saw a lot of the same symptoms that I get to enjoy on a daily basis. Not saying this for any sympathy, just grateful to be alive but I understand the desire to go out on your own terms.
Tbh i loved Bill and Franks story way more here than the game its just so beautifully tied up, even this soon this show is one of the best this year easily
I find it hilarious that, despite the idiotic review bombers making this the worst reviewed episode of the series on IMDB, this is probably going to go down as one of the greatest episodes of television of all time.
It's awesome that they mentioned Mileena. She's bisexual. It's pretty fucking cool that an LGBTQ+ character (Ellie's a lesbian) mentions another queer character.
The fact that gay marriage wasn’t legalized in their lifetimes makes it even more powerful, even if society hadn’t accepted them, they loved each other and that’s all that mattered in their world.
I've seen people calling it tragic or sad, but I think it was more happy than sad/tragic. They got to pass in old age, after a long life where they were loved, with agency and dignity. This is something neither queer nor disabled, characters are usually granted in media. The apocalypse happened in 2003. That is the societal framework they are coming from. One where gay marriage wasn't legal. One where initial meetings were often conducted through coding because being too open, too out, was dangerous. Especially in a small town. Bill probably had more genuine social interaction after the outbreak than beforehand. Because of small town stigma and pre 2003 socially acceptable homophobia. From this perspective the apocalypse gave them a chance at life they may not have gotten otherwise. Bill likely never would have known love. And Bill and Joel became friends. Even if they didn't want to call it that. Joel had the codes. The show story is exploring how love and relationships can be toxic. And this was a beautiful juxtaposition to that. I know it is different from the game, but I don't think it took anything away from the game. You still got to meet Bill - just Bill ending in a better place than game Bill. [In the game their relationship didn't end well, Bill is still alive but Frank has committed suicide and you find the body]. Joel and Ellie still got resources. And it was changed in a way to enhance the story. And game players get to experience something new. In the context of queer representation in media, including the "kill your gays" trope, I really appreciated this change. And the lack of bodies was really respectful of the story being told - it wasn't a story about their death. It was a story about their life and love.
I think Frank either had ALS or MS. Whichever it was hadn't got to his speech center yet, but his motor skills were clearly effected and he talked about it not being curable before the pandemic, so yeah, either ALS or MS.
So much happened in this episode that it's too much for me to comment on without at least three paragraphs so I'll just mention three things. One the bedroom scene caught me by surprise cause I wasn't sure how much they were going to go with it. Two the passage of time with Bill and Frank through the years together getting older and not able to do things as easily started the process of sadness towards the end. Three think that Frank might have had either a brain tumor or something that was maybe causing a mobility issue is what I thought when he mentioned an MRI. That real life stuff is what almost got me cause that going through life and getting old with someone is the best thing you can find, but can be sad because you miss the things that you aren't able to enjoy with that person do to getting older. That hurt more than the end of their journey and that window at the end almost got me too. I hope there are Emmy nominations for their performance in this episode. Enjoyed the episode and the reaction. Can't wait for the next one and your response to it. 👍👍✌out.
From about 7:05 til 7:30 ish : the music NO ONE has mentioned??? The oooolllllddd Fleetwood Mac, maybe the best BLUES band ever, playing “Coming Home”, I think. Three guitars = Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan‼️ Super UNappreciated, yeah yeah, everyone knows F Mac from the time of Buckingham/Nicks on….but, I liked the 3 or 4 iterations, diff lineups, b/4 them, even Better!!!
I watched the episode yesterday and watching your reaction I cried just as much... the story was so beautifully told. I was expecting to be scared and on edge like in episode 2 but then thought we were skipping on the lore at the start since we didn't had a flashback like in the first two episodes... and next thing I know I'm getting all the feels 😭
This was a beautiful episode but so many do not like the relationship between the two. I loved it, it added so much dimension to the characters. Loved your reaction.
It took ages for me to click that the actor playing Frank was Murray in White Lotus S1 ! The American accent threw me as he used his natural Australian accent in Lotos.
I’ve never played the game I was super sad for Sarah I felt bad for Tess but this episode got me sobbing I was a wreck. I also screamed with Frank not on the strawberries lol

Got to watch White Lotus!!
Looking! That’s what he’s from! I could not remember where I have seen him. He’s great
both murray and nick's acting was phenomenal, they made every moment count
That’s where I saw him first that short-lived “Looking” series.
‘Looking’ was amazing!!!
His Jazz wasn't the only thing getting all warmed up. 🎷 😎
sickening. Duke is dead.
You may know her for her roles in 24, Bosch, Runaways, Timeless, or The Vampire Diaries.
so far it's an a very emotional series you feel for these characters and that's hard to accomplish but when someone dies you feel it and the special effects are beyond amazing great work
the loss of his daughter in the first episode was heartbreaking i'm sure everyone loved her

This episode sure showed us what true love is like in the apocalypse.
And it was BEAUTIFUL! 😢

@@karlajomanorek8502 very true, pretty awesome to see.
It was a beautiful episode, despite the world went to hell around them, they found their little happiness and lived a good life together. Also the infected at the gas station, it felt like he still had some of himself in there, and when saw the knife in Ellie's hand it felt like he was begging her to kill him.
I totally got that vibe too.
having a closeted strong man be represented in media is so rare i'm so thankful for this show
They did Bill and Frank so amazing this episode instead of a sad and hateful Bill to the cruel world that took Frank away by infection.
I don't know if they changed a lot from what's in the game, because i don't know all the details, but this was very good
True, it does feel really balanced with both Joel and Ellie and Bill and Frank. Such a well crafted episode!
This episode literally deserves ALL the awards!
Agreed! Their love felt so damn genuine!
Expectation: action, gunshots, many infected
Reality: two bearded men kissing in bed 🤡
no.
Commenting on 1/7/24 that Offerman won the Emmy for his role as Bill!
I only cried a little on my first watch, but watching your full watch along in the Patreon once you both started crying I started bawling.
We've been crying all day watching everyone's reactions. 😢
This episode was done so beautifully 😫

@@Samantha-nn6ym HBO should censor it, or be banned in China
Only the beginning and end were excellent. The whole middle part could have been skipped. 5/10 (only mine and my friends opinion)
@@tefweebz That's actually a good point.
@@DoctorSess this is not the game go play the game
The fact that Frank stated that Bill is a coward in the game, but in Episode 3, Bill said that 'he was never afraid before Frank showed up' made it even sadder 😭💔
Ohhhh is frank the friend in the game that Joel an bill try to reach?
@@ikskwizit yeah that's the I was talking ha such a twist from the game ,no?
@sbrlw@g b not to much it is hinted that they had something going on
Video game Bill having a handy gay porno mag in an area of his house and him being very clearly emotional about finding Frank's body are already two big hints of his orientation, and his true feelings about Frank.
@@thespianmask Yes. Thank you. For those who played the game, at least for me,l that is, it was fairly obvious that Bill and Frank were gay and more than "just good buddies". We just didn't get all of this backstory to them and of course, this alternate ending.
I think all together they were with each other for 16 years
I love that one knows how to survive and one knows how to live. That’s why they’re perfect together. ❤️❤️❤️
Loved the friendly line turning slightly aggressive when Joel says "We can help each other and get that gun out of my face.", and Bill respects it.
One of the most incredible episodes ever. Hold each other tight and enjoy every day you have together.
I rewatched this here today. I don’t know why, I just need the emotion and this is the best episode of any show I’ve ever seen
It just brings me so so much joy that Bill and Frank got to have such a happy story amidst the horror of the rest of the world. So fucking beautiful!!!
That mushroom joke was FOUL 😂

RIP Annie Wersching. Forever the OG Tess and like her character taken way too soon 😢
@Late to the Party,
17:21 Craig Mazin didn't exactly say what was wrong with Frank but he did say that he's suffering from either MS or ALS ='( Frank was so alive, ready to do anything, everything.
On The Nature of Daylight was also used as the Theme of Arrival!
As soon as max richter kicked in…. I was done 😂 that was incredible
Yooooo me too! That song is my go to I need a good cry song I play on loop. I was absolutely gutted hearing that song on that scene. That was perfection.
I watched this first thing Monday morning (UK time) and it's messed up my entire day. I just keep thinking about Bill & Frank and sobbing.
A boat full of tears. 😢 😭 🛶
I always thought Nick Offerman was a great actor but this is probably his best work. Episode was absolutely amazing
I’m with you. Very emotional. They found love. Well done in your analysis.
When he said “you were my purpose” I cried so hard i started shaking 🙃🥲

FUCK....I want to watch these reactions but I end up crying EVERY FUCKING TIME.....gotta hydrate just to watch these.
Glad you pulled through. Strokes are no joke.
The little rock stack that Joel made is called a Cairn.

I just want to thank you two for taking time to talk about Annie
They say this is the only story with a happy ending in this reality😳
Deff 100% on the feels!
Hands down one of the best episodes of television ever. So well done, so beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think Frank either had ALS or MS. Whichever it was hadn't got to his speech center yet, but his motor skills were clearly effected and he talked about it not being curable before the pandemic, so yeah, either ALS or MS.
“I'm guessing you found this, Joel..because anyone else would've been electrocuted or blown up by one of my traps" Hehehehehehehe
