I born and raise montreal this type bus was good on flat road but on hill in downtown was dog yup no juice.when 1971 snow century most bus idle for while after they smoke street was just crazy yup.thank you video😊
I grew up in Pointe St. Charles and rode those buses daily going to High School in the 60's. There were some short wheelbase versions of them too and also remember a few of the shorter ones with a manual floor shift. Thanks for posting this video Elton as brings back lots of memories for me like the busses being so full with people heading to work in the morning that they would roll by your stop and you had to wait for the next one.
I remember in high school back in the 60's in Calgary I rode on them all the time and the trolley buses they took the last of them out of service in 1975.
The PSBGM contracted with the STCUM and used these Canadian Cars, MACK, then GM city busses to transport us students to Ahuntsic Elementary School. As a school bus monitor on arrival at school remived fthe yellow metal school bus sigb that was attached above the rear exterior advertising sign, climbing on the rear bumper. The bus drivers were very friendly. I remember with heaters blasting in winter the interior was very cold when minus 28 deg f outside. Thanks for the memories!
When I rode the 25 De L'Eglise line from James Lyng High in Cote-St-Paul to Wellington. They were still in service Rush Hour only in 1984!! and School Service! Fantastic! Transit Vehichles. That's like some? 40 Years Service! R.
i loved riding the brills here in vancouver, the electric trolleys were the best.i miss them alot.we have a transit bus museum bus that goes to events here in vancouver area. its a 1949 teardrop bus. you would really enjoy the bus museum and the nice collection of buses they have
Nice presentation of this vintage bus. Sadly, I am old enough to remember these from when I grew up in Montreal. A quick note on the MAN diesel engine. This would have been sourced from Germany where MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG) was based.
When I was in high school in Norfolk, Virginia they used city transit buses instead of school buses to get the kids to school. So for the students they used the oldest crummiest buses they had. They were totally beat versions of the bus in this video. They had manual transmissions. Back when they were in regular service the driver had to shift gears, make change, answer questions, not hit a car, make sure no one got in through the back door, give out transfers and make sure everyone put the right amount in the fare box, and put up with a bus that every thing rattled endlessly. Plus the engine sounded like it was going to throw a rod any second.
I rode these Brills all through the 50s, 60s, 70s, and into the early 80s (exact date, does anyone know?) when they were removed from service. They ran parallel with the larger GM TDH models and the GM New Looks, the latter of which were taken off the road about 2002--many of which which were either sold or donated to Cuba. Until 1966, Montreal also ran Brill trolleybuses along routes 1 Amherst-Christophe Colombe, 95 Belanger, 94 Frontenac and 26 Beaubien.
The 2700 series ran mostly in OLD LONGUEUIL, I remember well, that is why the bus has double seating, on both sides of the bus, because it was suburban, STM city buses had only one seating on one side, and double on the other.... Chambly Transport Inc.. had the same model buses like this one 1952 model.... Interior was the same....
Although they later started assigning models with single seats on one side, both this model and others, to Old Longueuil routes - which BTW were based at Mount Royal garage.
148 Metrobus in the side rollsign; 53 St-Laurent at the front. No route number sign in the rear window - they were installed in the mid-60's. The 148 only ran for a few years in the mid to late 70's, so the rollsign is probably not the original. The 53 was introduced when the Metro opened in 1966, and ran from Cremazie north on St-Laurent. It was eliminated in the late 1990's or early 2000's.
the AEC Routemaster had the following engines- AEC AV590 9.6 L or AEC AV690 11.3 L or Leyland O.600 9.8 L 6-cylinder diesel Retrofits: Cummins ISCe/Cummins ISBe DAF Iveco Scania
You forgot the batches of Leyland 0600 versions from new. At least 400 had that engine fitted from new. Some got AEC 590 engines fitted later in life. 50 non London ones at Northern General north of England had the Leyland engine as well.
I'm old enough to remember riding on buses like that. Jesus!
I saw ACF-Brill busses used when i was in Montreal in 1974.
Haha i was 9 in 74 Yes they were still around .I stopped seeing them late 70s . Used to take these to school too .
ACF-Brill was founded in Philadelphia in 1869.

Yea ive seen vids of those buses, quite de dedication..
Beautiful. I had heard that a 40' version was also still in existence. Would you or anyone here know for sure?

A quick note on the MAN diesel engine. This would have been sourced from Germany where MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG) was based.
The engines were the AEC 470 from England.
I remember as a child riding a bus like this. They were noisy and the inside of the bus was dim. Well as I remember it.

Elton..all the Brills that Calgary Transit had were powered by an AEC diesel engine with a two speed auto trans. Great find my friend
Thanks for the information Man!
Not quite a two speed. A single speed torque converter transmission with lock up stage. That's what sounds like a second gear.
Does the motor still work, would love to hear the Engine again.... !
Nice catch 👍🏾
Thanks man
I've seen it yesterday at Granby Car Show. It is owned by collector Stéphane Dumaine.
I remember the tires having weird square shaped treads
wow super c'était ou ça?

Built to last, this Brill ran for 30 yrs finishing in the south west of Mtl.

Mon père conduisait ça. Ils en avaient des centaines à Montréal et ils ont rien conservé! Les dernières auraient été retirés du service en 1981? 1982?

Funny how the front doors open inwards instead of outwards, I’ve never seen this on a brill bus.
Where was this? GRANBY?
