How to change the spark plugs on a 2011-2016 Toyota Sienna with the 2GR-FE V6. It wasn't a bad job except for the coil connector tabs breaking. Well and the fact that I got distracted while filming and left the paper towels in the intake ports. It's always fun doing a job twice. Luckily it was quicker the second time.

Loved the detail in this video, but it's worth noting that you definitely got the torque spec wrong on the throttle body bolts. NOT 15 ft-lbs. Per the toyota service manual, it's 7ft-lbs. Your instinct was right, and I should have listened to mine before I cracked one of my bolts off. Please consider uploading a voice over on your video to make the correction.
I'll have to double check our info. The source I was working from showed 15 which definitely seemed wrong. We've since added two more sources. There's not an easy way to change the video but I'll see if I can pin your comment to the top. Thanks!!
This is an insane process to change spark plugs (the back three particularly) - painstaking and tedious. There goes my Saturday. Thank you for the video!
Fantastic! You helped me save hundreds of dollars, and it was a fun experience working through the spark plugs on my wife's van. Thank you so much!
Spark Plug (torque 13 ft-lbs, 156 inch-lbs); Throttle Body (7 ft-lbs, 84 inch-lbs); Surge Tank (torque: 5mm hex head bolts: 13 ft-lbs; 10mm nuts: 12 ft-lbs)
Wow, called local Toyota & they wanted $469. I may watch this a few more times. That price is ridiculous.
Thank you for the demo!
That doesn't seem like a bad price at all.
Just got a quote for 765 for changing the spark plugs from the Toyota dealership.
We were probably in that ball park for the one in the video
@@alastairarmour6436 got a similar quote as well :)
You are amazing!!! I learned so many things in this video from you. Thanks so very much for your educational video. You are a wonderful instructor. You have helped so many people with this video. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice video, no extra BS just directly to here is what we got and how to do it, great video and huge help. Keep rocking!!
Thanks for a great step by step video! Helped so much and boosted my confidence to get this project done.
Great video, super helpful! Just remember to remove the paper towel from the block before you put the plenum back in.
Luckily I realized it before I started it. Got extra practice doing everything again to pull them out😂
Now I know why it cost so much to replace the spark plugs in a Toyota. What was Toyota thinking? (Another way to get more money from the customer) One of the worst engine designs! Replacing plugs should be just as simple as doing a oil change. Thanks for going step by step on this process!
Perhaps the people who complain about Toyota Engineering should try to make a front wheel drive by not turning the engine 90 degrees. Then the spark plugs could be reached easier. Toyota makes excellent engines. Working on the cars is not for everyone.
@@Mahigeer1 Toyota makes excellent engines but working on the cars is not everyone because a stupid designed.
That's what I'm saying. I replaced the spark plugs on my Kia Optima last year and it was pretty simple, so I figured I would do the same thing with my Sienna. After watching this I'm not sure I still want to attempt it - I suppose it will depend on what the mechanic wants to charge me to do it.
My 2001 Camry, and a 1993 and 1994 Corolla had the spark plugs right on top; extremely easy to replace, and all were front wheel drive. @@Mahigeer1
Thank you that’s was a very good explanation the details.
Thanks for this video!! How much do you charge for this service thanks!
Lot of work for spark plugs. I did mines when I changed my a/c expansion valve.
amazing how hard tio replace spark plug ...on my corolla 2006 so easy !! ...was iridium spark plugs ?
Great Video. Looks like not an easy job. What is a rececommend mileage to change those plugs out?
I want to say 100k but I'd have to look to be sure
120k
All that "removal of stuff", just to replace the spark plugs? I owned a '91 Nissan Sentra SE-R with the 2.0. 4 plugs right on top of the motor. Could change all of them in 5 minutes. I can see I won't be doing our Sienna's anytime in the future.😄
Yeah just about anything with a front wheel drive V6 has the rear plugs covered.
I could do it but I miss working on older cars with space under the hood!
Great video. What’s the part number for the harness clips from Toyota?
What is the model Milwaukee wrench you are using? Thank you?
Hate doing plugs on these same vans lol
Do you clean the mass air sensor and throttlebody since you have everything taken apart?
Very Handy
Thanks for the video, I have a Landcruiser V8 4.7L engine with 126,500 Miles on the clock but never change the spark plugs and never had any issue, no misfire or delay in start. do you think it is time to change the spark plugs? I know the spark plugs are not that expensive but why I should change them if I have no issue?
You're way overdue for spark plugs. As they wear the gap gets larger. Larger gap means more energy to make a spark which works the coils harder. Spark plugs are a lot cheaper than ignition coils to replace :)

Nice video, seems you forgot to take the paper out before you put the intake body back in
Yep, mentioned it in the description. Went back and pulled it out.
May you please share the connector part number?
Alguien notó que se quedaron las toallitas dentro del múltiple de admisión?
You have a link to get those shells from?
Your best bet is to call your local dealer. There are different options.
Should any gaskets be changed while doing this? Ie. throttle body or intake manifold?
Throttle body and intake plenum both get changed
how much was it for the spark plug job?
Front Strut Upper Nuts (torque 59 ft-lbs)
I just had spark plugs done, by Toyota, on a 2016 Sienna. I don't think they replaced any of the gaskets or seals. I now have had a big loss of power and a lean mixture. No service light, yet it is evident I have a vaccuum leak. What are the odds that they skimped on the gaskets and seals, and now it has to all be redone? I already had them check the work, once, and they swear the computer is coming back all within specs. Though they never test drove the vehicle once, since my complaint. No manual attempts at testing for a leak.
I wouldn't think they'd neglect changing the gaskets. Stranger things have happened though. If there's no check engine light how are you seeing a lean mixture? Are the fuel trims way out?
@@OTRAMM I coincidentally have had a 20% decline in fuel economy, and I have only 400 miles since they had the engine apart. You can feel the sluggishness on acceleration, slows down twice as fast as usual, and even at 70 mph on a flat straight surface the current fuel economy gauge reads in the teens (where I'd otherwise see mid twenties). Idles start off at ~1,500 rpm on a cold start, and come down to where they should be once warm. My paperwork only notes new plugs, the rest of the charge is labor. I'm at a loss, but the service manager will personally be doing a test drive with me in the morning. If he tries to send me out the door, saying everything is okay, just like his technician did, I'm inclined to drive to you guys (I'm not that far, a few hours away). Toyota, at the same time did things like the serpentine belt, transmission and differential fluid changes, but the only other things done since that recent service work is I had the tires rotated and balanced, and I popped in a new air filter. 121k on the vehicle, never any trouble before, and I just had a drop like that in the fuel efficiency. Something is up. That's why I have to look at it as a lean mixture, per my experience and the slightest odds that no code has been thrown yet. Oil change at that service appt too, checking all they did, and my brakes were done less than 15k ago. Even if a caliper has malfunctioned, which they want to say could be the case, or even a wheel bearing, there's no pulling to either side. They say there are no issues there, and they cannot figure it out or think of anything else to check. We even did a alignment check, and still all within specs well enough (rear tight toe is .007° out, that's it). You guys have any ideas? I was going to call you tomorrow anyway. Thank you for responding!
@@OTRAMMSpeaking of "strangers things have happened." I once had a Toyota dealership, at 36,500 miles (so just out of warranty), try to tell me that my suspension was entirely shot on this vehicle. To the point they had me on the phone with Toyota, and Toyota offered $3,000 of a $6,000 bill for that work. The shop tried to get me for $3,000 to their pocket. Nothing ever wrong with the suspension. I'm losing trust in Toyota technicians, for good reasons.
@@mic4902 Without watching data it's hard to say. Id think with that kind of economy drop you'd have a light. Sounds like there's definitely an issue. But it'll take watching the data stream to know what's really happening. Cody our Service Advisor is out tomorrow morning, he should be in after lunch though. I can't always catch the phone when I'm under a car.
@@OTRAMM My appt with Toyota is in the morning, so they have one last chance to get it right, if even just fess up as mistakes can happen, or I will check in with you in the afternoon. Thank you.
Hello. Just finished doing spark plugs following your steps. When i start the car the engine shuts off after few seconds every time. What did i miss?
Make sure you've got the mass air flow sensor plugged back in. That's usually what gets me.
@@OTRAMM thank you for replying. It is plugged in for sure
In that case, id triple check everything that was unplugged and look for disconnected vacuum lines. A large vacuum leak can cause the engine to shut down. If it's run long enough to set a check engine light id see what the codes are. That'll help point in the direction you need to look
What model of Ngk spark plug would fit a 2015 sienna?
The one that comes up in the parts catalog.
OK, so who are the dealers that promoted this video? 😂
a royal PIDA to replace these spark plugs
For anyone doing this there is no reason to remove wipers and cowl. Intake comes off without removing them.
The cowl is super quick to remove and makes it a ton easier to get at everything.
I hear ya your not wrong about making it easier. Im an auto shop owner and well time is money. Everyone has a different situation.@@OTRAMM
How much for that service
Do u even need to remove the connectors for the coils?
Yes
The camera angle you have we can’t see nothing except your back, how is this gonna help us
Use your imagination I guess. Seems to work for everyone else
Don't be a dick John
This is why I don’t work in the field anymore.
the only part I don't like about the transversely mounted engine in my minivan
I need to change the spark plugs and probably replace the ignition coils too. this old girl is severely overdue for a tune up.
Looks like a what 200$ job? Not more?? Lol
