Many years ago in Canada I used to dabble in folk music in a little band. One night at the University of Manitoba I sang a song, The Wild Rover, with Liam Clancy, my idol. Wonderful singer, guitarist and human being. The highlight of my life so far,
this is what I feel is missing in so many pubs here in the US, no background to the songs, no tales to entice the audience into being interested in the songs. Tommy and he were masters at it and I aim to replicate it soon.
If you are a performer , please do talk to the audience .It makes things so much more interesting .It does amaze me that so many singers ( even great ones) put so little effort into connecting to the paying customers .Give some background into your songs or do the research and give the history on the songs you are covering .
It's a song of learning, growing, achieving and then passing it on. What an alpha to omega. Pure excellence. And in this particular case, immortal pipes! Slainte!
We all know Liam Clancy rip was a great song singer and story weaver ,But when Bob Dillon said ,quote ,He's probably the best folk singer in the world .I think Dillon was right 👏👏🇨🇮
many years. What a hard life these men had. I remember the fishermen's wife's who would sell the herring round the doors where we lived. They carried a huge basket of fish hung from a leather strap round the forehead and a wooden board at the front where they would gut the fish.
Say there, this is as good as Luke Kelly's version. Usually I prefer Luke to Liam when all is said and done. First class musicians backing Liam up here of course.
The saddest line in any song ever written " she followed me when finally I sold my old guitar..." Brilliant brilliant song.
The delivery of it in the first lines! Takes me back in an instant. Also dangled my line off my dinghy looking for the shoals of herring
My ma took us to a concert of his in the 1970s amazing voice and presence I've never forgotten it
Liam will never die thanks to his incredible voice
Canzone meravigliosa , pare di stare veramente su un peschereccio condividendo la fatica ed il coraggio dei marinai
Ah Liam, you were a poet and an artist, I could listen to you for the rest of my life. RIP old son

The song is much better with the knowledge that it's made from the quotes of real fishermen.
One of the finest vids of him doing this magnificent song ever. Love it.
We have missed them all. What a shame.
Loved it since I was a child !

Great 👌 and god to be good to them
I´m astonished. Not only Luke Kelly sang this song marvellous. I like this version much!
I'm a huge fan of Liam's but Luke nailed the perfect version of this one.
@@MrGaberlunzie1 Luke sang it like a true fisherman sure, a master baiter, but Liam Clancy sings it mainline to the heart.

Magnificent!
Its a close call who the greatest Irish singer was
I think Liam Clancy and Luke Kelly were the best, let's call it a draw
Liam was first and will forever be first among those who came after.
Christy Moore and Mary Black. Liam and Luke were brilliant but Christy is something else.
