I just ordered the 990 pro 4GB. Arrives in two days. Nice to hear that they fixed the issues.
Btw, upgrading from 970 evo plus 1TB bought in July 2020 for $218, while the new one is $250 (black Friday sale) for 4TB and it’s pro version.

Up until a few months ago i was still using a 840 Pro. Used it for 10 years in my 1st CPU build and still indicates 70% life. upgrade to a new PC now with a 950 Pro and a 980 pro at very good price, love Samsung SSD. I enjoy your reviews, very thorough, and informative. I have made a couple of purchases based on your reviews. I will be purchasing a 990 Pro 4TB since it is single sided, which is an important detail that most reviews leave out. I will be installing it on a laptop board that will only except a single sided SSD. Some of the other reviews I've looked at don't take time to do extensive testing or mention physical details such as single or double sided, or heatsink thickness etc. Thanks for the exceptionally good, detailed review.

Great review, many thanks. I've been using 2x Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD's in RAID0 since they came out. I was originally going to just get 1x Samsung 990 Pro 4TB drive but Samsung took ages to release it. The RAID0 performance has been good (14000 read/13000 write), no complaints here.

I'm using the 990Pro 2Tb model as OS and workdrive combined with a Acidalie BT01 Cooler (black), it just rocks.
Was waiting for the 4TB model as gamedrive,
but since that wasnt out and nothing was to be heard from Samsung at that time about when the 4tb will be finally released...
i went with the Lexar NM790 4TB for just 200Bucks and i cant complain, it runs Cyberpunk and everything else without issues and darn fast on my X570 Aorus Pro.
That one is cooled with the BeQuiet! MC1 Pro btw, as the NM790 is also singlesided it just fits under my brick of a GPU (RTX3080 Aorus Master 12Gb).
Thx for the review of the 4TB model, maybe the next system will get some, as it will surely have more than just 2 M.2 Slots..^^

Great review and a very good SSD (as always by Samsung). I have the 990Pro 2TB since December 2022 and I faced the issue you mentioned in the video (firmware fixed only several months, non just weeks, after I bought it). The 4TB is still a very solid product but I really don't like those gaming performances and I don't figure out why they are so poor. I think I will end up in buying a SN850X 4TB just for games while keeping the 990Pro 2TB for OS and apps.

You have a remarkable talent for conversational yet thorough narration, and the thing that really impresses - as compared to many of the other YT'ers who do these types of videos - is that you don't have a jump cut after every sentence, LOL. This is awesome news to watch 🤓👍 Finally a 4-TB drive. I currently own (x2) 2-TB Samsung 990-Pro's version installed in Raid-1 mode installed on,
    Gigabyte X670E Extreme Motherboard

    GSkill 128-GB DDR5 (6000mHz)
So hearing about the 4TB version is awesome, because I am going to get 2 of them. I thought they were never going to release a 4-TB version. I thought they were going to release
a new product above the 990-Pro's. Like a 1000 or something LOL 🤷‍♀😂 I am waiting for a RTX-5000 GPU now, and Ill be all set. As I am still running a GTX-1070-Ti in this new system.

Bought this drive yesterday, false humbleness aside, I am the guy who will make the most revealing single-threaded IOPS-wise benchmark showing that 4TB 990 PRO is the king... it will stress 1100 GB swap file for really random reads/writes of size 16 to 256 bytes... brutality itself... will report the Health and how many Total Reads/Writes in TB were done by reading the SMART... the whole torture will be on Fedora 39...
As for your review, it is good but lacks the synthetic IOPS reporting, my suggestion for your future reviews is to include screenshots of 4KB random IOPS for 1GB and 64GB blocks.

Nice to see the Gen 5 SSDs being included in the benchmarks.
I wonder how noticeable the differences in benchmarks are in actual use. I have no idea if the top of the chart performer is 1 second faster, or 10 seconds faster, or 0.1 seconds faster than the middle of the pack when launching a game or application, for example. I can tell that it's faster in score but have no way to translate it to real difference in usage.

    Great video!
My greatest disappointment regarding Samsung SSDs is the fact that the "Pro" series are no longer using 2-bit MLC NAND, but they use regular 3-bit TLC NAND, which is slower, 10X less durable, and less reliable.
    I would like to see a 1TB M.2 PCIe 5.0 x4 drive with 2GB DRAM and 1-bit SLC NAND.
But no company seems to release such a drive.
(Enmotus's FuzeDrive was the closest to that, however, today Enmotus is no longer in business).

Thank you for posting this excellent discussion of the Samsung 4 Tb drive. I do own 2 Samsung NvME drives that were affected by the "drive health failure" issue. Fortunately, I did the necessary firmware updates on each of the drives. They are working fine today. I was displeased with Samsung for not handling this issue better at the time. When I had the chance to build a complete system based on an Asus ProArt Z790 motherboard, I opted to buy Western Digital SN850x devices instead of Samsung devices. If I could build another system today, I would watch all of your NvME product reviews, listen carefully to your advice, look at product availability here in the USA, and then decide. Thanks again for this review. I think I understand the amount of work that you put into examining the Samsung product and then producing the review content. Both are considerable projects by themselves and require specialized skills and constant training.

Maybe you could make a video about NVME enclosures like satechi’s USB4 enclosure and Acasis NVME USB3 enclosure, since most Mac users need this enclosure in order to make it work with their Mac! Would be awesome to see one!

@@TechTesters yes they are a little spare at the moment. But a lot of people are getting into NVME drives and enclosures. Me and almost all of my creative friends, like a few hundred of us are looking for a good enclosure and are on e regularly basis scouting TH-cam and google for reviews of reliable and thermal capable (with decent heatsink) 40 gbps usb4 enclosures, since it is way cheaper, faster and more reliable in comparison to a SanDisk SSD. Especially the latest SanDisk SSD’s ;p.
For now we are running the Acasis USB4 enclosures, a little bit shady company, does run hot but it is working for the moment.
We are waiting for Satechi’s USB4 Enclosure to be available again, which is expected to have better thermal control, so running a lot cooler which as you know will be more beneficial to drive lifespan and better read/write speeds of course!
But we are just creative’s, trying things out on our gut feeling, and you are the pro with the cool test results and benchmarks! So we would love to see the insights (like actual read/write speeds when using a specific NVME drive per specific enclosure, operating temps etc.) from you :)
If you decide to make a vid on it, you would be one of the first to do a proper one, so it would be a premiere! Regarding TH-cam business, I think you will gather a lot of views and subs, since this is a new niche that comes with NVME drives!
Have I already convinced you yet?! Haha
      We will be waiting! Cheers

@@TechTestersI have one more question that came to my mind just before i wanted to pre-order. The SSD distributes heat through the heatspreader on the bottom and the controller on the top. Now I have seen on newer motherboards that they also have heatspreader pads on the bottom of the motherboard. I'm using the Msi X570 Gaming Edge Wifi, which has a slot with a heatsink, but it's just a heatspreader pad that sits on top of the SSD. Does that mean that the heat can't really be dissipated completely and the SSD gets too hot? Is it better to leave out the built-in heatsink and buy the SSD with the heatsink pre-installed?

Remove the file transfer bit within that test and the WD performs even better. Not everyone transfers files. That part of the test allows the others to catch up in points, still the WD was superior in the full test. And add the 4tb version of it, the others aren’t even close.

I had a question after complimenting you on the thorough test of this drive. My thought on 4Tb drives is very simple, I can get two 2 Tb drives for less, but one needs to have the computer to run that and not all motherboards are made the same. I bought a drive, Fanxiang 2Tb, which has Dynamic SLC. From what I gather, it is great as long as the drive does not get too congested and single level blocks are no longer available. In this, do they really differ that much from QLC?

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks! Most high-end drives use SLC caching to feel fast in light use. Cheap QLC drives will really perform poorly though once you get past the SLC and/or DRAM cache, so for any serious work high-end TLCs are a lot better.

Oof, that price though. It's not worth it for me to get one 4TB drive that costs more than two 2TB drives. I do hope NVMe prices keep dropping though. It's getting close to that sweet spot where I can finally justify swapping out all of the HDDs in my NAS for NVMe drives. Being able to rebuild that array in less than a day would be _so nice._

@@AlfaPro1337 The theoretical speeds are similar, but I did assume there is something a little off with it given the price. The other drives of similar theoretical speed seem to be roughly around the price of the 990 pro, more than I am willing to pay for a drive personally. I use a 1TB K3000 m.2 for my os, a 2.5" for gaming (since I already had it) and storage is still on hdd (I already had them as well), were my hdd's to fail I would probably buy more hdd's given the still very high price of large 2.5" and m.2

@@-opus I still cannot fathom as to why people are buying these (high perf) SSD as their main OS, or game drive.
You aren't going to see those advertised speed on daily usage. I was initally bump that I bought the 1TB 980, because it's DRAMless, but after thinking it through, it doesn't matter. It's currently at 35TBW out of 600TBW.
There's currently no games using MS DS, and even in the future like 3-5 years, you are on a new SSD already.
I did retired my 3TB game drive (P300) and replaced it with an 4TB 870 Evo, I see night and day difference, especially games like Skyrim, or those heavy 3A games. No more texture streaming.
I'm planning to get some 'used' 4TB SSD (as 2.5 inch) to replace my Workspace drive (Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads, etc---this is also another 3TB Toshiba P300). By the term 'used' means, that it's on my country's used listing, but it's close to brand new, or just recently, I bought a 'used' 4TB 870 Evo for half the price of a new one---because the company decommissioned a server, and had some SSD spare as cache drive, but ultimately never used.
