This is awesome! But pro tip: living in some less than stellar maintained NYC apts has taught me that cockroaches absolutely love laying eggs in corrugated cardboard. (Even if you personally are clean it only takes one dirty neighbor to attract them) Definitely want to look into sealing the sides of the cardboard with tape, along with sealing of any other small opening in the designs. Took me a few years after college to move into a nicer condo building that doesn't have a roach issue :)
There are plenty of videos about people (mainly women) making things with cardboard and sealing the edges with modge-podge or some other stuff. As long as the materials aren't food for bugs (paper-mache is made out of flour) it would work. I love the raw cardboard look, but it's easy enuf to modge the edges and then spray-paint or contact paper or fabric and spray-glue it.
Jennifer Grove roaches eat glue...that's why they like boxes...sticky wallpaper, etc...they don't eat sugar...so maybe paper mache with a flour sugar mix?
That's easily corrected by simply gluing poster board over the edges. PS painting the outside of your furniture with a little school glue will exponentially increase the strength of the cardboard.
Great work Zach! Having moved house more than 20 times in 15 years, having light, compact furniture, sounds like a brilliant idea! It's flexible thinkers, like you, that take us outside the box, if you'll pardon then pun. An Australian guy designed emergency housing, that was made of cardboard. It was around the time of the Boxing Day Tsunami, in Indonesia & Thailand.
I love the way you travel and find these new less-known ideas, ways of living, and lifestyles. Documenting them allows people to become inspired to step outside of the conventional ways, which is what I've always wanted to inspire in others myself. I enjoy seeing the places you explore, and seeing the drive and motivation you have to keep documenting them. Keep doing what you're doing! -Nolan
Love it. When I first moved here I made myself a cardboard bed. It was strong and awesome and a perfect fit for my finances and situation at the time. Tempted by the standing desk...
Very, very Cool! Great designs!!I've had a pretty serious thing for Cardboard off and on over the last 25+ years. I've built a number of Geodesic cardboard domes. 18 years ago I constructed an art installation at a friends studio space. Using cardboard I built an 8 foot tall, 16 foot diameter dome; it left just enough room to walk around it. On the walls surrounding it I stapled more cardboard and painted murals with an airbrush to simulate spray can art. Adding a short wall of cardboard between the entrance and exit so you had to walk all the way around the dome to the exit. The name of the show was Cardboard Box in the Alley(the dome being the Box as well as the whole installation was made from boxes from alleys.) Good to see someone using cardboard in such beautiful designs!
Corogated plastic folks! It's runs about $15 for a 4x8 sheet, comes in colors and is water proof. All you need for tools to make this type of furniture is a large square, tape measure, pencil and a disposable razor knife. It doesn't get much simpler. I like it!
Both kinds of materials are useful and solve different problems. The plastic is weather and water-proof. The cardboard is compostable or recyclable into the same material. Combine the two of you into one brainstorming month in a Maker-space and you could change the world.
***** Check out some of the videos Paul Elkins has on his yt channel. Everything he designs uses corrugated plastic sheets, even some recycled stuff. He has some great ideas of his own.
***** I *like* the idea of creating homeless shelters. Call me crazy, yet I would go a step further and imagine what it would be like to make these shelters water proof, *and* have some form of mini solar power solution. Thinking of the *Goal Zero* products, and how they could be combined with homeless shelters. Just thinking out loud. #OpenSourceIdeas #ModularHomelessShelter #SustainableConstruction
Paul Elkins Making a "dent" is still a positive step in the *right* direction. Such a "dent" could inspire a wave of creativity that could go *viral* after a certain point in time. #makeadifference #StartSomeWaves #BecomeTheChange
Great idea and really good designs. Maybe some low VOC water based paint will make them more colourful and attractive. The tape idea is great but requires more work than paint. Maybe also design a small structure like a tiny house. It will need to be weather protected again acrylic paint and will need something for the weight like sand, stone or concrete. It can be as small as 8x8x8 ft (2.4x2.4x2.4m) so it uses full size panels for the wall and by using multiple module create a larger structure. The advantage will be a light weight kit no larger than 8x4 ft and height dependent on the number of pcs needed for that structure.
Steve Hatfield well I think he is rather thinking in the Box like thinking in the cardboardbox agreed its an creative idea but I dont see the that the cost and time to make it and then buying waterproofing paint or something would be cheaper then looking for furniture in secondhand shops after all he uses really thick cardboard to make his structures and not the cheaper kind that is most common
I like the concept and I have 2 suggestions. the concern that it is vulnerable to bugs or liquid could be fixed if it was just sprayed with some kind of sealant after assembly (there are several types that are available retail like flex seal or any number of similar products). it is relatively light weight so transporting it back inside after spraying sealant would not be as big of a limitation. the look would change which brings me to my other suggestion. some of the furniture items could be fitted with a fabric cover. there are several universal ones out there for chairs or couches that are already available so it might be easier to offer some simple pieces of upholstery foam that just sit on top of the seat and make the sofa or chairs to a size that works with existing seat covers and this foam. Also if this company made a chair that matched the dimensions of an automotive bucket seat, there are a lot of options that could be attached with currently available seat covers.
I like it. How about using the box for an assembled chair or couch and printing on the inside of it a pattern of where to fold and cut to make something smaller to go with the initial purchase like a footstool or small table of some kind.
Yes, I dislike the odor of cardboard. Possibly good for short-term student housing, short-term apartment rental (especially in old buildings where there is no elevator) and for those who relocate.
Bizarre that I should watch this now, because we just moved a two hundred pound table in from the garage. Lightweight furniture is sounding pretty darn nice, at the moment.
the idea behind this is that it is eco friendly, doesn't require any electricity and other harmful chemicals. sure there are other alternatives, but we need to give credit to these creative people.
I actually did this like eight years ago when I was six, fridge box with a knife and some tape and I made a chair that could hold me and my dad. Man how far people have come.
Absolutely and incredibly ingenious. I plan to order! I wonder if you do a twin or double bed? This would be awsome for van dwelle! A future project. Thank you for sharing.
This is awesome I love everything he made. I have been getting really into making things with cardboard I made myself a vanity desk and it almost looks like a real Desk
Man is a genius !!! Plus side if i ever become homeless im gathering all the card board i can and making my own shelfs desks and chairs 😂 Just need to find a way to make it waterproof and im solid
I really like the idea, but I think (in the UK at least) furniture in shared houses or uni accommodation has to comply with certain fire regulations? Great video, as always :-)
One of his small end tables in profile looks like a W. That could be a great hit at University of Wisconsin or Washington, etc. One could even use colors to emphasize the concept.
This is extremely cool. I’ve always had a curiosity on what to do with all these cardboard boxes I send off to recycling…I might dabble In Making a chair or table. Has anyone ordered one of these??
It's very creative and amazing, but i don't think i could use it daily, because of the noise. This is something i am very sensitive about. But for a showroom or for profesionnals it could be very interesting and stunning. Thanks for the video.
cool ideas however the price is too high considering its cardboard but i understand there has to be make some bucks simply becuz of the manor labor you put in it but cant be higher than wood . but i loved it
That is awesome, I'm always looking up how to make cardboard furniture and this is the first time I came across your video and I love it! It's very inspiring and encourages me to try to make something out of cardboard, please tell me how I can purchase some of your product
Pretty cool concept, but there's no way in hell I would buy any of the furniture here. Instead, I can look at the website to get and idea how it's built, and build it myself with my own spare cardboard :D
Looks awesome, but the prices are pretty insane considering it's "just" cardboard. He should sell his blueprints too that would be nice for international buyers.
I wish that someone with your design skills would design a cardboard shelter on wheels for the homeless. Ideally when unfolded it would be the size of a decent tent but folded up it would be a box to hold their possessions but it would be on wheels, about the size of a shopping cart so it could easily be moved from one location to another. The outside walls could be painted with epoxy or something similar to make it weather resistant. Then share the plans online so that people all across the country can help create a solution since our criminal, genocidal government only creates the problem of homelessness, they have no desire to help people. They want to spend all the money killing people with their endless, genocidal wars.
Frank Gehry has made cardboard furniture for a long time now. I remember he made all the chairs for a sushi restaurant called R23 in Los Angeles in the 90's. This guy has some interesting ideas but this is not new. I would like to see colored cardboard used not just with duck tape.
He keeps saying he uses 4 by 8. But that does look to be at least double ply cardboard. So double the dimensions that he's giving and you can get an idea of how much cardboard you need.
Man... I've had an idea like this for a long time, but I had been thinking of using a different, much more costly material. The idea of using this for anything that would remain inside or using corogated plastic, or both simply put, genius ideas.

That was my concern there must be Pest Control integrated in the design material

I would fill in the edges, and seel and or paint everything so that the items wouldn't collect dirt or become damaged by spilled water.
Love it. When I first moved here I made myself a cardboard bed. It was strong and awesome and a perfect fit for my finances and situation at the time. Tempted by the standing desk...
This guy did it right, great design with a smart message to back it up. Thanks for sharing!

You should name it "Corigami" for corrugated cardboard. Really thoughtful and brilliant!!

That's really cool and the cardboard looks really thick which is a must if it's going to support body weight. AWESOME!!!

Pardon the pun but way to think out of the BOX. This young man is on to something here. Well done young man. Peace out to you

I suppose these are prototypes
I Love that this is plastic free living! what a great idea!!
Kristen your documentaries are great!
Thanks for sharing,

The money is not in selling the furniture, it is in creating workshops and integrating it with a curriculum focused on the lifestyle ur promoting...
Rhys NYC make sense, the time they are puting into it.
wow! your ideas are extremely awesome. seeing you making things using boxes gives me an idea. also will help me to save cost in the future.
I need some paper boxes right now... This is awesome
This is pretty cool. Epic way to make your house look swag without really expensive wooden or metal furniture.
Today he came to my leadership class and showed us how it worked and we are excited to be working with him once a week to make some stuff
this is brilliant .... ! ! ! ideal for people who keeps moving around from one place to another ... like me ....

Smart and really cool looking!
Obviously for short term use though, with the issue of staining, smell, etc... :)

This scenario needs just *two things* ---- drunken party + burning cigarette butts.
This is really good inspiration! I have to make a chair for my art class, so thanks!
You are so cute
This is really cool! It doesn't look half bad either.
This is fantastic, I can wait to buy me on of those desk. As a designer this is very inspiring.
This is straight up brilliant!
the rocking chair/slash bookshelf is brilliant. I found your video searching for 'how to make cardboard art, playlist"
Как я Рада, что нашла Вас и такую мебель! Помогай Вам Бог!
Saw the recorder on the desk. The respect I already had went up some more.
Awsome, Can you pls share how to make a sofa set with step by step. I really want to make it in my rented house. Thank you.
Wow! I love your creativity!!😱😱😱💖💖💖
Thanks Kristen,
You are doing a beautiful job !
Merci from France.
awesome Furnigami !!! Man--- really i loved it.
The Giant Hamsterwheel is amazing! You could make a circular bed out of this. I imagine that would be really comfy. :D
Exceeellent work,....👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
9:56-10:41 I need such a wheel.
Inspiring, I have to admit !
Okay, once I saw Zach get into the "giant hamster wheel" I decided he doesn't actually ever work. He just enjoys it too much.
I'm so inspired you don't even know

Really Love this!
Absolutely brill!
The cardboard engineer. Super bosss.....
This is awesome! exactly what I was looking for in form and function
On those cardboard chairs, you could drape some cloth over them and they'd look almost store-bought.
It would probably reduce the creaking they get after a few years too.
Add fiberglass...extend the life and strength.
Thanks alot , you don't how much you help me ! you ae the best !
Thank you very much 🙏💓

Functional but aesthetically crude... Interesting though!
I'm in love with this guy! 😍
Great job bruh... I hope to see more...
this is so cool , i definitely want some of it be in my house :)

shouls consult a fashion designer and display them in a fashion show. cool
Hi is there any way to get the measures on paper in order to recreate some furniture on my own? please contact me
