Best video on this topic I've found. Question: can you file/organise your cases by their attribute values without having to check that attribute for each case? For example (under person as per your organisation) group or sort all the cases by gender or age as per your example.

I am very new to NVivo and I found your videos are really useful and easy to understand. Just wanted to seek confirmation on the point you had made around minute 9.10, rather a silly question, would you reckon coding of interview transcripts be conducted at the 'Internals (Source)' or 'Cases (Nodes)'? Many thanks Lee.

You can code either of them - if you code a case, it actually codes the main source. As such, it is often easiest to code the main source or transcript - the codes can then later be viewed at case level.

@@HullUniLibrary Got it, so they are linked/synchronised. I am setting the parameters and this piece of information helps a lot. Thank you very much!!

@@user-uy1nq2pn8s Absolutely! Everything you code is ultimately coded in the original source/internal/file. If you code a theme or a case, that coding is always reflected in the main source/internal/file too!

Very helpful video! Thank you. When looking at a particular case, is there a way to show how the references for that case are coded by node?

Absolutely. You can run a coding query to produce this view. We have a video on this later in the series.

Re processes described at 5:50, it's quite annoying that you can't select multiple passages of text at once by using the control button. Is there some other way the program allows you do do this?

There are a lot of quicker ways of managing cases. You can include the participant name in the same paragraph as what they have said and use a text search query to find what they have said by spreading coding to the paragraph and saving results. Alternatively you can use styles - and then autocode what they have said. help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/automatic_coding_in_document_sources.htm

Can a case be assigned more than one value for an attribute? For instance, if I have an interviewee (a case) who has two occupations, is it possible for me to assign 2 values for the same attribute?

    • @HullUniLibrary

You would most likely need two attributes. Occupation 1 and occupation 2. Alternatively, if you use it as a text field, you could type both in there.
