  • Loved the tapas scene in Almeria, Andalucia, Spain! We chanced upon El Quinto Toro on our first day in the city and ordered a beer and some tapas. Didn't know what most of the menu items were and didn't want to use any translation apps, so it was exciting to just pick and hope for the best!
We loved the anchovy with aioli, poor man's potatoes, and the pork loin dish - great flavours! Serrano ham wasn't bad but meatballs were quite disappointing. Did not know what the fried almonds were till later in the trip but they were so good and went very well with the tapa! Bill only came up to 10.70€ - 2.70€ for the beer + 1 free tapa and 8€ for the 4 other tapas. BARGAIN!!
Returned for lunch another day and went for 2 large beers (we weren't asked which size we wanted!) and 7 tapas. Again we just made a random selection including a lamb liver dish, a chicken liver dish, anchovy with white cheese, poor man's potatoes, what turned out to be smoked pomfret, chorizo Iberico, and tuna with bell pepper.
Enjoyed everything once again - just being able to enjoy a range of dishes without worrying about how overpriced it would all be. All the dishes were served with little crackers, fried almonds, olives or pieces of bread which was a nice touch.
Our last tapas meal was at Cerveceria Alcazar which we spotted one evening - it looked so nice and chilled with people dining in the cosy alley down the stairs where the restaurant is. We went back on our last night in Almeria and were introduced to Vinto de Verano which is similar to sangria. Deliciously refreshing! We have been missing this in our lives!!
Got 2 free tapas - anchovies and chicken croquettes - and also ordered calamari, cod and octopus from a separate tapas menu. Everything was cooked fresh and the seafood was fresh and lightly fried. Service was very friendly as well.
    Both places are highly recommended!!
El Quinto Toro was on a side street off the Central Market, which is also worth exploring. The tapas bar's details are here: www.lonelyplanet.com/spain/an...
Cerveceria Alcazar is here, not too far from Paseo de Almeria www.just-eat.es/restaurants-c...
