Airline Pilot Breaks Down Airplane Flying Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

  • Airline captain Fatima Shafi examines scenes depicting airplanes from movies and television. Why do the pilot and copilot repeat what each other are saying in 'Sully'? Does weight really affect an empty aircraft like in the Tom Cruise film 'American Made'? Do pilots lie to passengers when they say they'll only have to wait, "another 30 minutes"?
    Fatima Shafi is a captain for a major US commercial airline and is also a former avionics engineering officer for the Pakistan Air Force.

    Bruh she annihilated "Flight"

    • @GoranXII
      @GoranXII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      For the wrong reasons. Now I'll admit I'm neither an aviation structural engineer, nor a an aerodynamics whizz, but I'd be more troubled by the idea of flying an aircraft upside down than I would be by which engine got shut down when (the movie doesn't get it wrong BTW, they shut down the right engine, and try to fly just on the left one).

    • @lukerinderknecht2982
      @lukerinderknecht2982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +293

      @@GoranXII she roasted it for _many_ reasons. Legit question - if you aren't an expert in aviation, why do you say what she said was "wrong"?

    • @GoranXII
      @GoranXII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@lukerinderknecht2982 Because she said "of course you lost power, you just shut down your engine." Except they shut down the _right_ engine, but then panicked and said they lost the _left_ engine as well. It's not an issue of engineering, it's an issue of left and right.

    • @lukerinderknecht2982
      @lukerinderknecht2982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      @@GoranXII you're right, they did shut down the right engine and not the left (the shot of him doing so was flipped upside down, I'm guessing that's why she mixed them up).
      It's not really clear why he shut one down but not the other: the co-pilot said "fire in the left engine", the captain said "put it out" but the co-pilot then puts out the right one. Regardless, at that point the other engine fails too, so there's nothing for Margaret to give "full power" to.
      The bigger picture -- she points out about 7 other things that are implausible (and sums it up generally at 14:42), so when you say she annihilated it "for the wrong reasons" that's not accurate.

    • @GoranXII
      @GoranXII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lukerinderknecht2982 She also says that having both engines out should cut electrical power, except that's not true, due to the existence of the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit). Yet she _doesn't_ criticise them for flying upside down, despite the aircraft not even being tested to take it, nor the pilots being trained to control it, at least, as far as I'm aware.

    • @dahawk8574
      @dahawk8574 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is Sully blatantly LYING to Katie Couric in his 60 Minutes interview:
      th-cam.com/video/2BrNHTXMTIs/w-d-xo.htmlm13s
      He knows what he said. And if he ever forgets, it is right here on tape:
      th-cam.com/video/mLFZTzR5u84/w-d-xo.html
      Yet you can see the clever editing that 60 Minutes did. They don't care at all about investigative journalism. Not on this story. They sweep his mistakes under the rug.
      Here is Clint Eastwood's decision to repeat this same lie:
      th-cam.com/video/JSlbHK07fkY/w-d-xo.htmlm11s
      And Fatima too, for whatever reason, chooses to deliver to us this bogus story about superior airmanship. There were many gross errors that she could have pointed out. Error that led this aircraft to crash, when it was in perfectly good condition. Had Skiles and Sully done their job properly that day. Yet Fatima chooses to not do her job. And Couric opts out. Along with Eastwood. And the NTSB. Etc, etc, etc. Everyone who knew better.
      Starting with Sully.

    • @dahawk8574
      @dahawk8574 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Dylan Visser, this interview he gave to 60 Minutes, just a few weeks after the crash, is the ONLY time I have heard Sully come anywhere close to owning up to his mistakes:
      th-cam.com/video/XQVGglYOhEg/w-d-xo.htmlm39s
      Curic flat out asks him, "...do you regret anything that you did?"
      "No." Sully replies, without a single second of hesitation.
      This is the moment you see the OFF flags on his conscience pop into view.
      And in the 11 plus years since, I have not seen any hint of that conscience reappearing.

      It's one of the most gender-imbalanced careers in the world, something like 3% female. I don't think this is cultural or hierarchical though, because aviation is very rigid and meritocratic - I think most women just really don't want to be airline pilots.
      edit - an obvious flaw in the above reasoning that I didn't explore: even if it's true that most women just don't want to be pilots, that itself could be a cultural artifact. But this is looking at the issue backwards. It's a lousy and boring job, so rather than asking "why don't more women want to be pilots" the more pertinent question would be "why do any men want to be pilots". The irrational inclination of men towards boring and unhealthy jobs probably *is* a cultural artifact that ought to be addressed, but feminists are unlikely to find it interesting, and would rather raise the ratio of women in these jobs (because they pay well, and are therefore "good" in our values) than reduce the existence of boring and unhealthy jobs.

    In Miracle on the Hudson, starting the APU is not the first item on the QRH checklist. Actually, this step falls much further down the list for 2 engine out procedure for an A320 aircraft. It was Sulley's expert knowledge to decide to turn the APU on immediately, and this decision could have saved some lives during the emergency landing.

      Hey Larry, I'm a commercial pilot and flight instructor and I hope what I say gives a little hope. One of my students was in a similar situation to you, he wanted to fly but being afraid of what his parents would say got in his way. Went into his family business and made millions but was never happy he said. He came round to our school at 62, determined to get a private pilot's license. I signed him off for his checkride last year and he passed first try. Sharing that joy with him is one of the best moments I've had as a pilot, despite being nearly 40 years his junior. You can do this and I hope you do. Not following a dream kills many before their body gives out. You got this.

    • @DougHanchard
      @DougHanchard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Many pilots like the challenge of LaGuardia airspace flight restrictions. Its intersecting runway and taxiway layout limited the number of movements and were often jammed with aircraft.
      As she mentions, weather can and frequently does create long departure and arrival delays.
      Its two 7,000' runways demand perfection. The margin for error is extremely limited.
      I hated the airport layout, amenities and chaotic terminals. Though I haven't flown as part of a crew after the 2015/16 terminal upgrades.

      Several accidents have been blamed on cockpit conversations about non-operational matters, hence the rule. It's too easy to miss steps on checklists when you're nattering on about something that's not connected to the task at hand. Colgan Air Flight 3407, Eastern Air Lines Flight 212, and Air Florida Flight 90 are all crashes that were affected by extraneous conversations.

During the flight there was a minor issue with one of the engines and as a precaution the pilot shut it down. There was no noticeable loss of performance and none of the other passengers knew. The only reason i found out was because the pilot was a good friend and he allowed me to sit in the right seat and i saw him close the throttle, then the fuel air lever so i asked him what was up.
