I’ve always seen him as Erudite. He’s obviously not Amity, Candor, or Abnegation. Obviously he’s brutal, but he’s not brave. He hides at any chance and switches to the team most likely to win. He is very clever, though, so Erudite seems like the best fit.

Nope. The books confirm that he's completely a Candor. He has no divergence in his personality at all.
