That was pretty much the worst job of potting a hosta I have ever seen lol. First off you should spread out those root bound roots. Make a mound in the pot and drape the roots over the mound at about a 45 degree angle. Then back fill with soil. A good spikes potting soil is best with pine bark mulch added for aeration. You also want to lake sure the hosta sits about an inch or so below the rim of the pot.This hosta is way too deep in this large pot. If you are going to make a video, consider putting some effort into it next time.

Good video. How big does the container need to be, do hostas develop deep long roots?
Thank you. I just planted 10 small hostas in containers. Do I need to protect them from slugs or any other pest? Would a metal circle around them (with a sharp edge) keep soft bodied critters away? It seems to help with my kale. I just don't know anything about hostas
Can i keep them indoor?

Am in zone 5b will containers blue hosta survive ourside in winter or should we bring them in .or planting in ground only make them survive winter.
This post goes back 5 years ... so my question looks at long term success of hosta in planters. I live in the inner city of St. Paul, Minnesota. I've been exploring hosta in planters for ±5 years (growing hosta for 26 years). At this stage I am beginning to think that hosta and planters are a crap shoot. For the 2022/2023 winter I intend to double protect my planters.
Stage A: Will be continuing the painting tarp routine of wrapping the set of planters with a painting tarp.
Stage B: [New for next winter] Will be to loosely place each planter into its own plastic bag.
These planters are set against the south side of an apartment building (Management is being extremely supportive). Last fall I wintered 15 planters; with only 5 surviving. Previous winterings have produced the same type of results. I am not seeing a rhyme or reason for the those that succeed; In theory this ought to work. Does anyone see anything wrong with this game plan? Ideas ... anyone.
Everyone says hosta's do better in shade. Mine that are in full sun do better than the ones in the shady part of my garden.

Hosta's cannot handle full day sun! Have had them for years and they look good for a couple weeks and then the leaves look like they were burned in a fire! I have never seen them anywhere around here looking good if they get all day sun.
I have tried, mine hated the sun. I have hostas on my east side that get direct morning light, but shade in afternoon, those are doing fine, I'm about to pull them all up though....
Some varieties are more sun tolerant than others.
I can't move a heavy planter like that! I plant my hostas in a plastic pot and slip those into a ceramic pot. So much easier when the pots need to come in for the winter!

Can they remain outside in summer in the pots?
I have some in large containers and some in the ground, they all have survived the extreem northern Ohio winters and summers for years now. I don't move the containers indoors.
