Coomaditchie: The art of place - Art mapping

During the 2022 research phase of curating ‘Coomaditchie: The Art of Place’, Tess Allas and assistant curator, Alinta Maguire, uncovered a map of the Coomaditchie area showing Port Kembla Beach, Coomaditchie Lagoon and the surrounding areas. The original map - dated 1929 and held in the New South Wales Archives Collection was re-interpreted as a wall painting to inform visitors to the Museum of Sydney of some of the history of the landscape and claiming of land in and around the settlement of today’s Coomaditchie. The artists, Mignon Steele and Alinta Maguire were commissioned to create this wall map which featured in both the 2023 Wollongong Art Gallery and the 2024 Museum of Sydney versions of the exhibition.
