Totally awesome. My Uncle Jim who passed away last year. He told me that you guys were a real nice Railroad and turns out he was right. I also follow your counterpart. From Germany and Austria. The DieBahn and The OBB.

I sure hope that the co-location benefits outweigh any shortcomings of having distributed dispatching. I remember hearing that dispatchers would be physically familiar with the geographic area that they were handling, to understand more than can be presented on a screen. Hopefully NS offers the ability for dispatchers to visit the area they are controlling. As a professional gEEk, the single point of failure possibilities of this setup really concerns me....

railroadjim As I recall reading somewhere dispatchers spend about 2 weeks in training to get to know their territory. But is there any follow i?

@@cruisinjoe two weeks PER SHIFT normally. Depends on how well one learns the territory it could take longer.

Wondering what type of redundancy you have if all the dispatching is done in Atlanta for 22 states?

Easy...None. It isn't about redundancy. It's about saving money.

One Centralised dispatching locations enacted by other class 1 railroads before hasn't worked as well expected. How is this going to very well be any different?

It didn't do anything, just forced everyone from the field into one place to sell their homes, move to a much more expensive city and lots of traffic, combined all dispatcher seniority rosters into one. It allowed upper management to close field office buildings to save pennies. As it was, with the software and computer system is the same thing in Atlanta's NOC as it was in the divisional offices. There was territory changes with the move, but still, nothing that couldn't have been handled as it was. Summary, the Atlanta NOC is just something to brag about for the hierarchy and the money folks that they drag in to see it. When NS's new Atlanta HQ is built, this center is supposedly moving to that building as well, so they spent a lot doing this to only move in a couple years.

Same dispatch system at Atlanta NOC that was being used when they were in the division offices. It was just to close field buildings to scrape more pennies for the hedge funders.
