    I know that the contest is long over but I wanted to contribute my perspective anyway as an interior design student.
    After studying & learning about the work of Charles and Ray Eames, (architect/designers) I’ve really come to adopt a lot of their philosophies & beliefs. Charles particularly has a lot of great quotes, some of my favourites include;
    “Design is a solution to a problem, art is a question to a problem”
    “Design is an expression of purpose, and it may (if it is good enough), later be judged as art.”
    “Recognize the need to find an idea that says the very most with the very least.”
    I really appreciate Charles’ perspective. He has heavily influenced the way I perceive design and the kind of designer I want to be. He believed that any design should serve its purpose in its most basic, unadorned form, and not only serve its purpose but serve it well.
    For this reason, I think beauty is when you are able to recognize and understand the purpose of something in its foundational form, and that purpose is served well.
    Love this podcast, glad it was recommended to me by my sister.

    Beauty to me is pure happiness! Finding something good in a terrible situation, helping other people and doing a good deed everyday, never thinking bad of anyone and keeping your judgements out of things until needed focus on youself,beauty can be on the the outside but it comes more from the inside! For example a beautiful girl could have a terrible attitude towards things that then cancels out the beauty she holds on the outside in my opinion! Beauty also depends on how the person sees it and there are so many different people! Beauty is finding that thing that you will do anything for no questions asked because you want too from your soul! BEAUTY IS ALSO MAGICAL!

    I'm much too late to enter the contest but I would suggest that beauty, far from being efficient, is that mystery which is left over once you have allowed for efficiency; it is not utilitarian or instrumental, it is that which is not necessary for survival, but which makes survival worthwhile. As a person who is essentially an atheist and materialist, it is the only thing that I feel I cannot explain purely in terms of biological evolution.
    God, when I read that back, it sounds like something from Pseuds Corner, but I swear it is an honest attempt to try to understand something I can't understand: why some things are simply beautiful and cannot be analysed or broken down any further.

    • @alanalan9242
      @alanalan9242 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I'm trying to say is that I can see a kind of evolutionary logic to the idea of why a particular man or woman would be beautiful: as a sort of signal that they have good genes to pass on to the next generation. But why should a sunset be beautiful? Or a lake? Or a field of snow? What evolutionary advantages can there be to that sense of wonder that comes from any of these things?

    I would say beauty is first of all subjective, we must establish that, second beauty is measured by something how pleasant it is to expierence (through any of the senses) or analyse something and for how long. Hence how such diffrent things can be beautiful. For example let's start of with the basics a person, a person may be attractive hence they are pleasent to experience through the eyes, the more we wish to experience something the more beautiful it will be. A archaeologist may find the ancient Aztec paintings to be beautiful, this is because he finds joy and is pleased in analysing them, looking at their history looking at the stories they are telling hence he can look at these paintings and find them beautiful, though someone who isn't as into ancient history may not get the appeal.
    An immensely beautiful thing you could look at indefinitely and still not get bored or be reluctant to do something else, just lost in the pleasent experience of the thing.

    Beauty is a synthesis of form and function. Everything in its correct place doing just the right action to accomplish the goal. This applies to the sexual partner, to motorcycles and to poetry.

    Beauty is the exquisite. It’s the splendiferous, the delightful and the magnificent. It’s the excellent and the marvelous. I see why Plato conjured up a theory of forms and in those terms beauty is the measure of an ideal. Though perhaps an ideal is not a thought form but a measure of adherence to the underlying laws of creation that are in turn dictated by the necessary function of a given object 🤔

      A human eye has its own standard of beauty while the crabs eye has its own. Though even the most perfect crab is not something a normal person would call beautiful. • @filiporozovic8109

    I know I'm late, but I think beauty is aesthetics. And, aesthetics follows some universal principles. (When something is so beautiful that 99% of people would agree onto that it is in 99% of cases something that it's shape, colours... are appealing. But I would agree with phrase: "The beauty is in the eye of the beholder." , and here is why. All things "seek" perfection, and some come close to it more than another. So, if we could measure how much something is perfect, and for the example, something is 70% of it's perfect form, so other 30% is what makes different oppinions about that thing. (P.S. I know it's more than 50 words, but since I'm 1 year late to this mini contest, I've given myself more space about this topic. I really like your channel, watched few episodes and now I want to learn more about philosphy.) 😄

    Beauty is both a noun and a verb. It means having a process that allows all the actors an equal say, or opportunity. When an actor is marginalized then beauty is diminished. In this way, beauty is a process or movement. When we fix a result in place, by being or creating, the beautiful result is valid only as long as the result is engaged with. What we call death is a static result. Engaging with beauty revives it and provides new opportunity.

    • @stoney606
      @stoney606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the word beauty is not a verb: to beauty, Beautiy, beutied, I have beautied. No it is not a verb. You can say something was beautified, as in, made more beautiful but the word beauty itself is no verb. And it does not mean that, it comes from latin: "bellus" which means pretty, handsome or charming.

    • @projectmalus
      @projectmalus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stoney606 The boundaries between verbs and nouns seem to be blurred with adjectives like pretty, handsome or charming. There is a suggestion of movement, aliveness with adjectives, even if this comes from a relation (action) from a human perceiving an object, like a building, rather than a standalone object without humans describing it.

    • @stoney606
      @stoney606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@projectmalus no, the distinction is clear, verbs and nouns are different classes of words. nouns are our name for things as: a building, an apple etc. verbs are describing action, for instance: to walk, to talk, to sing etc. Adjectives gives characteristics to a thing: beautiful, ugly, warm, cold etc. There are no suggestion of movement as i see it, only subjective meaning which you impose onto the concept. The concept of an adjective does not imply anything, other than a describing word.
      That said, the meaning of the word beauty is not by any means at the core of the discussion. The discussion is about whether beauty exists or not. But of course, we must come to terms on what the meaning of the word is, before starting to discuss its deeper meaning in a metaphysical sense. So then, "what is beauty?" is a differrent question entierly. and must not be mistaken for what the word means, but rather what are the premisses for something beautiful. What characteristic does it have, is it changing or constant etc. and can we by these premisses conclude that something is beautiful? And then when this definition is in place; does it exist beyond ourselves? To me, it boils down to the Platonic theory of ideas, does the idea of beauty itself exist? or is it merely a shadow of something other which we cannot even comprehend?

    • @stoney606
      @stoney606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stoney606 What is there that stops moving? Blue vibrates in a certain interval, that's it's space of being, but it doesn't stop moving in order to be. It is very odd, and perhaps language separated this being and movement to try and deal with this oddness. "She died young and made a pretty corpse". Sure, she's inanimate (except that she isn't at all, and neither is a rock) but those colors are still dancing all over the place.

    There are examples of perfect geometric shapes in nature. Example: a raindrop on a flat placid pond forms a perfect circle when impacting the water.

    • @momodycath8040
      @momodycath8040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not perfect. Even if microscopically, every shape in our material world has imperfections that make them not quite a circle, even if they look perfect. Even a drawn circle (which is technically still to be considered "in nature") isn't perfect. A "perfect circle" is pretty much just a mathematical abstraction, an idea.

      is it? what we percieve can be wastly different, so different in fact that my guess is, that so many things can be called beautiful by this definition that everything is beautiful. Does that not make the definition of something beautiful meaningless by these terms? to have beauty you must also have uglyness or that which does not provoke such expression, so when you say we, you mean you, beacuase this makes sense only on the subjective level. The real philosophical question is whether beauty exists regardless of your own personal experience? Is there something that is objectivley beautiful?

So protecting the protector of the young makes you the over head or means to the end. Both necessary but it makes sense biologically before an era of prosperity and mostly comfort.

I may prefer fat blondes and you may prefer skinny redheads with freckles, more often than not, because you have similarities to what you find appealing, both with the intention of finding gratification in one way or another, unless, of course, you find yourself unappealing when you look at yourself in the mirror. Beauty is what happens when a limited being bears witness to a sliver of the infinite.
    For example, when you look up at the stars during the nighttime, you catch a glimpse at the limitless expanse of space and the incomprehensibility of it’s size.
