In today's review, I cover a band that I feel gets overlooked far too often; Daevid Allen's Gong! See my thoughts, right here, and let me know yours as well!
(Also, sorry for the lighting issues. I had no idea the sun was going to burst through my blinds, like that!)

My favourite trilogy (not that there are many). I love Gong. Of the three albums: Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, You, my favourite, although I love them all, is the second part of the trilogy, Angels Egg. "I Never Glid Before" contains my favourite guitar solo of all time, even though it is only about 60 seconds long.

Thanks for the kind words! Definitely looking to review the other two, soon.

That solo - same here! It's so angular - part Free Jazz, part Post-Punk.

Tim Blake also became a member of Hawkwind and I believe still plays with them now and then.....Also Steve Hillage got really into the UK Rave scene

I like spaced out, progressive, trippy music, so I got the concept of the album staight away. Had it for some time and still love it.

So cool that you got that Flying Teapot record. I've never seen it. I have a "box set" that is really a book with 4 cd's - "Radio Gnome Invisible" Trilogy and some extras. Now I gotta watch your RSD video to see if you got the live album. Great review - I'm looking forward to the next two installments.

Thanks so much! I saw the same set, and thought it looked really nice, though I've never heard it before. Unfortunately, I didn't get the live record, though I DO express regret over that in the video, haha. Take care.

No matter how silly the mythology may seem you must remember the time when the album was recorded. The musicians were first class performers.and produced some amazing performances. I would recommend the You Album (1974) particularly the track "Isle of everywhere" which should show how musically powerful this band was.

Oh yes, I've been enjoying the rest of the band's catalog immensely, and fully agree that the era they came from had plenty to do with everything we saw and heard from them. Hoping to do more reviews of their albums, soon.

Great review! I bought the 2018 remastered CD after not having heard the record for a little over 40 years. I can't remember exactly what Id thought of it then, but in the interim I'd listened a lot to Angels Egg and loved it, so I thought I'd give Flying Teapot another go.
I was underwhelmed. But, on the back of this review I'll give it another whirl. Thanks.

You got it! I was also really confused the first time I listened, but I do feel it definitely grows on you with multiple plays. Enjoy!

@@JDOmnislash That would be great!!!...BTW...I never cared much for the first track that's also the name of the album ...the full album can be found on YT...I would link it here but YT don't allow posting of links even if it's to a YT Vid (weirdos)...One other thing is...every Hawkwind album is different so please just go off that album try a few if you haven't already

BTW...How did you get introduced to Gong?(Not being funny or anything but you are a young American)...I was in my mid teens when I was (born in the UK but live in the US now)...only reason why I was were I hung out with a bunch of hippys in the early 80s they also introduced me to a band called White Noise the album was electric storm that was very much inline with Gong...One more... was a concept album by Spirit called Potato Land

@@sidhawkwind8179 It was a funny coincidence. My local record store happened to get an imported copy of Flying Teapot (the one I hold in this video!), and I found the cover really odd and intriguing, so I decided to do a little research on the group. The descriptions pretty much sold me, and I was able to get the album the next time I went over. Was NOT expecting to like their albums as much as I did.

Is this a deal where you will want to collect all 3 records in a trilogy? Sounds interesting. I'm a fan of psych. Bill Young.

    • @JDOmnislash
      @JDOmnislash  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think so, yes! The whole trilogy has an entire story behind it, and the albums get arguably better as they go along. I'll likely make videos on the other two, soon.
