The way I personally interpret this song as someone who took advantage (abusive), didn't love or appreciate their partner at all (the rain and wind was closer). After the relationship, the two broke up and all you wished from the ex is "heartbreak and misery". You'd think they'd "come back", like a vicious cycle. However, you realize that the ex is not coming back, as they have moved forward and have a new and nurturing relationship. On the other hand, you were unable to find someone else and begins to regret how much pain you've inflicted, how you took them for granted, and "jealous that they are happy without you". I think the commonly known meaning is also applicable but I think this one works, too.

This reminded me of when my best friends just suddenly stopped talking to me. It happened about 3 months ago or so, they slowly but surely began to distance their selves from me and started to talk with other people, while I'm just here waiting for them to acknowledge my existence until this day. I am rarely able to reach out to them because they are always busy being with other people. Then I realized, if you don't have friends to surround you, why not let your family do the honors? They have always been by my side, made me feel welcomed home and supportive. I had a very traumatic childhood. And because of the abuse I was put through I was put in foster care when I was 7. I feel this song in my soul. All I ever wanted was to be enough for my mom to stop doing drugs and to take care of me... I just wanted to be enough for her to put me first. But she seems to love everything more than she could ever love me.... I aged out of foster care and I have a beautiful baby girl and I’m pregnant with my son and some nights I just break down because I know not only will I never have a mom or dad but my children will never have grandparents. It breaks me . My entire life I’ve faced multiple suicide attempts because I didn’t understand why I wasn’t enough. Why the people who were supposed to love me could look at me and hurt me as a helpless child. I look at my daughter and want more for her. They may not have grandparents but they have a mother who would give anything for them

reading the comments, it made me realize that this song's meaning can go in different ways, meaninga, and interpretation. i am glad Labrinth made this masterpiece.
The way I personally interpret this song as someone who took advantage (abusive), didn't love or appreciate their partner at all (the rain and wind was closer). After the relationship, the two broke up and all you wished from the ex is "heartbreak and misery". You'd think they'd "come back", like a vicious cycle. However, you realize that the ex is not coming back, as they have moved forward and have a new and nurturing relationship. On the other hand, you were unable to find someone else and begins to regret how much pain you've inflicted, how you took them for granted, and "jealous that they are happy without you".
I think the commonly known meaning is also applicable but I think this one works, too.

This reminded me of when my best friends just suddenly stopped talking to me. It happened about 3 months ago or so, they slowly but surely began to distance their selves from me and started to talk with other people, while I'm just here waiting for them to acknowledge my existence until this day. I had a very traumatic childhood. And because of the abuse I was put through I was put in foster care when I was 7. I feel this song in my soul. All I ever wanted was to be enough for my mom to stop doing drugs and to take care of me... I just wanted to be enough for her to put me first. But she seems to love everything more than she could ever love me.... I aged out of foster care and I have a beautiful baby girl and I’m pregnant with my son and some nights I just break down because I know not only will I never have a mom or dad but my children will never have grandparents. It breaks me . My entire life I’ve faced multiple suicide attempts because I didn’t understand why I wasn’t enough. Why the people who were supposed to love me could look at me and hurt me as a helpless child. I look at my daughter and want more for her. They may not have grandparents but they have a mother who would give anything for them
