    There aren't any camera tricks, you are just watching someone who is a true virtuoso in his art. He has been practicing and studying card magic since he was 4, and he studied with some of the best magicians who ever lived. This isn't one trick, or a single prearranged deck, its a series of perfectly executed sleights, brought seamlessly together into this beautiful performance, which is what a great artist does. Any great jazz musician has studied for decades, practiced, practiced, studied with better musicians, etc. and only after all those years are they able to construct something truly breathtaking as a result of that deep knowledge and experience. Ricky Jay is one of the world's great artists. Enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement for what it is: a great thing.

      This is a few years old at this point, so I don't want to ping directly, but RE: camera trick.
      I doubt that's what happened. If you look at the rest of the scene, everything else is still in exactly the same place, with exactly the same shadows. He also reaches directly out to use this stack right afterwords, so splicing the image wouldn't really work there either. Even the cards on the lower portion of the deck remain stationary when this "cut" was made. To swap a deck and leave that many elements in the scene at exactly the same position would be miraculous. Especially given the human body's tendency to subconsciously drift, there's no way his hands would be in the same position between two scenes like that.
      Also, if you look closely, you can see the cards don't just change position, they snap up, rock off to the right, and re-balance to the left. If it were simply a camera trick, that cards would have snapped to another stationary position, this kind of momentum and balance wouldn't happen. If I were to take a guess, there's a card in there that is accustomed to being bowed, and was working its way back to this state, when it popped, raising the cards above it and creating that rocking motion I just described.

    This video has become sort of meditation for me. There is just something about this video; the pure lack of music, talking and wow-effects, but simply the natural sounds of a deck of cards together with the elegance of the trick that gives me the chill vibe...been watching it in bed every time I have a hard time falling asleep, and it tucks me in every time :)

    The craziest thing about it, and it's a real compliment to Ricky Jay, is that he could come up with a story to go along with this routine that make it even more impressive than it already is. He's as good with the sell, the patter, as he is with the sleight of hand routines, and he's a bona fide Grand Master of Grand Masters. I was actually not expecting him to go through the spades at all. I expected he had gotten all the shuffles down so perfect that he was going to do a original deck order reveal. I was watching this like a magician. Then I saw him start doing the spades bit. And it got harder. And harder. And harder to imagine him being able to do the original deck order reveal. And by the end of it I can't understand how a person could be that perfectly tuned at anything. That was like watching someone do a 10m standing vertical leap. If he didn't do a deck swap (which I'm certain he didn't) then he is just that perfect at card manipulation.

      @@user-yn3mz3le1t I'm not sure about the rest of this routine, but if you watch his shuffle at 0:16 (pause, then step through using the comma and period keys), he completely pushes the two halves together, then cuts the bottom half out and slaps it on top. There is a very similar false shuffle which uses the cut to hide the fact the two halves have been preserved in order, but this ain't it. :-)

    • @kallewirsch2263
      @kallewirsch2263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think, the point ninjoshot was trying to make is, that these days a lot of people cry "cgi" or "camera trick" when in reality it is slight of hands (or some gimmick) and lots of training. Lots of training means years of preperation and practicing.
      Of course most people know that there is nothing like "real magic", it is always tricks. But these tricks need lots of skills to master. This is not a video game, where you just have to type in the correct cheat code and the dragon in front of you vanishes. And that is the sad thing: those people do not appreciate the work that has been spent before the presentation. It seems like people (some of them) are no longer used to the concept of learning something and mastering something even if it takes years of practicing to do so.
      Ricky Jay is one of the grandmasters of card tricks. One does not earn such a reputation by pulling of camera tricks. Accusing him of doing so is insulting to him.

    For those of you who think its a camera trick and did some kind of deck switch, you should know Ricky Jay is a master at his craft. There are ways the you can retain the order of cards while making it look like you're shuffling them. He could have used a perfect riffle shuffle which would have kept them in a perfect order among many other techniques. Ricky Jay is a master at that shuffle and could have used it through out his whole performance as well as he is a master of his craft. I wouldn't doubt that he could do this exact routine in front of us in real life as its presented here. It's more than what I can say about those so called "magicians" like Criss Angel who need a video editing software and a few paid actors handy to make real "magic" happen.

      All of the shuffles in the beginning were in fact real. He did do a deck switch at some point in the video and it’s very hard to tell because he does it well. Deck switching is another form of sleight of hand that is entirely of its own skill set.

Most people won't even notice how utterly amazing it is due to the fact that it's minimalist and real and executed by a grandmaster, while we live in an age of the overcomplicated and fake and sophomoric.

    I know that others probably only watch this once or a few times in their lives and are amazed. But I've studied Ricky Jay vigorously, and while I absolutely respect and love the man, as a magician myself, I can't help but notice that at 0:30 he begins fanning the deck with his right hand, and by 0:32 there is an obvious cut to a wide shot angle, but he forgot to keep fanning with his right hand, after they switched the decks, he fanned out the cards on the table with his left hand. This is where the cut of the video is, not at the end like most believe. From 0:32 forward, everything Ricky Jay does is authentic manipulation. But, man, do I wish he would have used the right hand after the cut to wide shot angle. This whole routine would have been even more mysterious and impossible. It took watching this video maybe 20 times for me to notice this. Ricky Jay still is, and always will be one of the greatest card mechanics to ever exist. His mastery over a deck of cards and knowledge of magic history, the way he blends the two in performance are unmatched, and will continue to be so because if you think about the era where he was at his peak, Ricky Jay really was one of the greatest card manipulators on the planet. He inspired a whole genre of new magicians specifically focusing on card manipulation, people like Richard Turner exist because of people like Ricky Jay. The only reason superb mechanics exist today is because Ricky Jay became massively successful with his routines, proving the path as viable. Kudos to the master. Wish they got the cut right though. It angers me haha. Bad part on the director.

    This clip is from the full-length documentary: "Hustlers, Hoaxsters, Pranksters, Jokesters." In the actual special the parts where this video cut out are when people are talking about Ricky Jay's mastery of the art; but the effect itself was shot in real-time and with a regular deck. Ricky Jay is phenomenal. There's a new documentary on him but only in select theaters. He was recently on David Letterman show; sadly age is taking a toll on his hands (shaky) but still amazing.

    ignore all the shuffling from 0:00 to 0:33. The cards are in new deck order after 0:33. You can tell by how he spreads the cards using his right hand only for the camera to be zoomed out and magically he is spreading it with his LEFT hand. two videos merged into one.

      Samuel Medina because while that is true from 00:30 and on, before that point is legit shuffles. If you really "read up" you'll see that false riffle shuffles are only possible either with strip-outs or perfect farrows in which he did neither.

    • @SVDurLIFE
      @SVDurLIFE 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      artistjohnwoolley false. with any shuffle, you can angle the shuffle. by not squaring the cards up properly, you can easily separate the two halves.

    • @SVDurLIFE
      @SVDurLIFE 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      artistjohnwoolley not any shuffle. my mistake. but shuffles in which they lay into one another. idk what it is called, but the shuffle where you essentially chop the cards back and forth in your hand, it would be impossible there

      I like people like you, because it is hilarious how many people get fooled my magic. At least look up some sleight of hand techniques before you comment. Look up a 'zarrow shuffle' on TH-cam. It is a fake riffle shuffle, that most magicians know about and use.

  • @DramakilzU
    @DramakilzU 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's possible he cut the video while he fanned out the cards. If you watch closely at 0:30, you'll see he switches from his right hand to his left hand. This creates the illusion of a very well shuffled deck, but he is instead using a pre-organized deck and that all later shuffles are trick shuffles that don't actually mix the card order.

In all fairness it's a simple mistake to make and happens to all of us at one point or another. Besides it was only a single digit and you can be forgiven, due to the fact both digits are right next to each other. Also now that I do understand the original comment, I have to admit, you're right, it is really funny, his facial expression makes it. He genuinely does look like he couldn't give a single fuck to what he is doing @2:27 lol.
