  • A new Julian Barnes, A NEW JULIAN BARNES!
I like Julian Barnes (even more so after having met him recently) and his writing makes me a very happy reader. His latest is no exception. A taut tale of creativity and survival against the backdrop of extreme power and fear. You'll want to listen to the work of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovitch as or after you read it. You'll be glad that you live in a much freer workd than he did. And you'll be grateful to be living in a time when a writer like Julian Barnes is at the height of his powers. And this week you could win not only a copy of the novel but a special poster signed by both him and designer Suzanne Dean. AMAZING!

    The Noise of Time
In May 1937 a man in his early thirties waits by the lift of a Leningrad apartment block. He waits all through the night, expecting to be taken away to the Big House. Any celebrity he has known in the previous decade is no use to him now. And few who are taken to the Big House ever return.
So begins Julian Barnes’s first novel since his Booker-winning The Sense of an Ending. A story about the collision of Art and Power, about human compromise, human cowardice and human courage, it is the work of a true master.

I met Julian Barnes, extremely briefly, in 1989, soon after the publication of A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters. The Literary Review (does that still exist?) had given him its cover that month, with the headline 'Barnes Saves the English Novel' (only mildly supported by the actual review inside the magazine). Rather unexpectedly faced with the man himself, and scratching around for something even slightly incisive to say, I asked him: 'Have you saved the English novel?' He blinked, somehow both shrank and expanded in his seat, gave me a look that might have been conspiratorial, or may just have been puzzled, and announced, in more or less these words: 'Shall we say that, if the English novel was unwell, it's now sitting up and taking soup.'

I really like books set in this time period and set during the Stalin regime - Julian Barnes is on my list of authors that I want to read more books by.

Wow - I met Julian too. Crazy. He was in Bude a little while ago and I saw him eating chips. I had a really short little chat (told him all about our book group in Bude) and he gave me a chip. Been looking forward to reading this since ever since that chat and chip.

As a long time admirer of Shostakovich, I was delighted to hear that Julian Barnes had decided to write a book based on him. Having loved 'The Sense of an Ending', I have high hopes for this one. Currently listening to the Barnes/Dean podcast, it's absolutely fascinating to learn about their creative relationship. It's great to be able to see the different cover variants too, not something readers often get access too. Would love to be entered into the giveaway :)

Fantastic Vlog, really wet my appetite and will now read The Noise of Time, if this is half as enjoyable as the Sense Of An ending it will be an outstanding book.
    Thank you

I have just finished reading The Sense of an Ending. Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time and Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being stick out as two likely influences with their workaday philosophies about human action and interaction. I am now under Barnes' spell.

+Will Loxley Glad to hear it. I really rate Barnes as a writer and I think this book is right up there with his best.

I shall have Shostakovich Prelude and Fugues playing while I read The Noise of Time. Feel of book design hints at Graham Greene novels I grew up with and that sense of fear in the World from late fifties through sixties (the legacy of Stalin).

I've been looking forward to this book since I heard about it! I've always been a little apprehensive about reading Julian Barnes because of the fervour with which his work has been described by certain reviewers, but I think this may be a great one to start with because the plot sounds right up my alley. Can't wait!
If I enjoy it as much as I think I will; do you have any recommendations for my next foray into the world of Barnes, seeing that you sound like a longtime fan?

+Michelle Stubbs I actually haven't read many of the books people rave abour (Flaubert's Parrot, A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters) but I really enjoyed Arthur & George and The Sense of an Ending is very neat. Listening to him chat with Suzanne Dean in that podcast made me want ot read Love etc...

It's 4.15am on Monday morning, I can't sleep due to a knee injury and I've just watched this review of the new Julian Barnes book. I'm desperate to read it (even more so now) but I can't get out to buy it so I was wondering if I could be considered as a potential winner of your prize. Thank you.

One thing I really like about Julian Barnes is that no two of his books are alike - Flaubert's Parrot is radically different from Arthur & George which is radically different from Sense of an ending. I'm excited for this new novel! I would like to be entered in the giveaway as well ( I've got a UK address so no prob)
