“My breast was filled with admiration for my own, most noble conduct” 😂 I’ve long noticed Mr. Conan Doyle’s very English parochialism; he definitely shared his countrymen’s disdain for the “non-English”….His send-up of the French in the person of Girrard is simply delicious ❤
He could have sent up the French is much harsher ways just by having them villainous scoundrels who the British outwit+beat at every turn, the French should be thankful Conan Doyle was Scottish(who allied with the French for centuries against us hated English)and not an English author who no doubt would not been as courteous
Conan Doyle said that Gérard was based on the Baron de Marbot and it's hard to argue with that. But surely he has more in common with Ney, Murat and Lasalle in his ridiculous lovable self esteem. I read both volumes of Marbot's memoirs right after finishing Gerard, looking for more and it was nothing like what my school boy self was expecting. Too bad there was no Internet back then and no audiobook channels particularly this one.
'A History of the Peninsular War' by Charles Oman is as good as it gets IMHO, but it comes in at 7 volumes! And yes, I have read them all! Esdaile, Charles: 'The Peninsular War' by Charles Esdaile ia very good too.
As you listen realize this story was written by Jack the Ripper. Don’t believe me? Read “The strange case of Dr Doyle” and you will. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
As do I... approving this comment and writing another comment below it. What else am I going to do? Fry some bacon and eggs and make a cup of coffee. No, I'd rather be here writing dumb stuff.
When my children grow tired of my reading voice, I play these. We cherish you. Thank you for the work you've done.
Thanks Jared. Glad you enjoy them in your family. All the best to you all !!!
Thank you Mr. Wagland. Your work is a gift to humanity!
Cheers David. Kind of you to say so.

Nice set of emojis there EP!
Come on now,. Does the brigadier "pull the leg" or is it Conan Doyle who's doing the pulling? I'm not always sure.
Double double
First! ❤ Dude. I need to get a life.😂
