  • This series' overseas visit is to Mallorca in pursuit of the Beaker people, an enigmatic culture thought by some to have been responsible for the introduction of metal work into Britain.
Traces of the Beaker people are few and far between but on the island of Mallorca, an entire settlement has been uncovered, including a 'maze' that presents some difficulties and a temple site that may have links to astronomical implications.

Well, they are the same word.
The Beaker people were named after the drinking beaker that was typical for their culture, then in the 19th century that same word came to be used for a glass vessel used in laboratories, and then the muppet was named after that laboratory beaker.

I've been on digs in a few countries and I have no words for how useless these diggers are. That said, it's not their fault. They're not "lackadaisical"; they're doing exactly what they're told. The comments about students "not being laborers" are also missing the point. Archaeology students are not art history students. Archaeology students are supposed to learn field techniques because archaeology doesn't get done without getting dirty, and there's no substitute for hands-on experience in interpreting context. Also, there's the old adage "work smarter, not harder." With half that many diggers and a few wheelbarrows, the work would have gone a lot faster. The directors are doing these students a great disservice by not giving them proper practical instruction or grounding in field techniques.

They were told at the start that There was something to look at under that 3 cubic meters pile of rocks. So why the hell would they wait until the team shows up with only 3 days to work and THEN start moving it? All those students moving a teaspoon-full at a time in second gear! Where they did the walking search they had to start by clearing the brush. Again, that should have been done long before Time Team showed up. If I was Tony I would have walked away and told them to treat the whole site as a suppository.

The one funny thing about this series is that Tony is always rather impatient and wants archeology to be done fast and it's understandable since it's a TV show with only a 3 day budget/schedule to get results but he always seems rather perturbed that other archeologists work so slow (as they should be professionally speaking). It's probably shocking to others that these guys usually call in heavy machinary to dig trenches instead of doing it slowly as to not miss or damage artifacts.

You're all wrong. There was a 'proto Time Team' a year before this series began.
It had pretty much the same team, only Mick doing the narrating.
Then they concluded they needed an 'everyman' to ask the questions that we, the non-archaeologist audience would ask.
Without Tony, the expert archaelogists would just tell us their thoughts and finds and we'd have to accept that because we're not experts.
With Tony representing us, the 'stupid questions' are asked that the archaelogists themselves would never ask because they already know the answers.
It took me quite a few years to understand why the seas were the ancient world's 'super highways.'
No construction, no maintenance required. All you needed was a sturdy craft that didn't sink easily and could be navigated to its destination.
Getting to a place only 30 kilometers away over land would have taken people a few days without any roads. Travelling over the water was so much easier than going over land.

Funny I don't remember my history books ever using that word, I believe the words repeatedly used for Mexico, and the other places was conquered by force in search of gold, and other treasures.
Even down to the food sources the native peoples ate, and what other natural resources they could plunder.
Then there's the facts that the ones that weren't decimated by the diseases they carried with them, they raped, or put into slavery digging for gold silver, and other valuable minerals, are out right murdered.
Then they changed the genetics all through the islands along their travels to Mexico, and even that of the aboriginal tribes of Mexico itself.
Where once the native peoples of these places were all basically the same from Canada down into south American, and the surrounding islands around the eastern coast into the Gulf of Mexico.
As the Spanish people were once Caucasians as all Europeans are, until they were conquered, and under rule of the Moores from North Africa.
Thus you have the darker complextions, dark eyes, and darker skin tones compared to the once fair skinned blue, and green eye's of the native Spaniards before the time of the Holy Wars.
Then there was the endless procession of Catholic priest, and soldiers demanding the natives convert to their religious beliefs regardless of their own religious beliefs before Spaniards conquered all the different peoples between rhe outer island chains, and Mexico up into South western United States which were part of Mexico at the time.
As they're journeys carried them across Mexico into those areas of the United States in search of gold and other treasures.
So how can you use the word colonized in regards to the Spaniards conquering these places to use as slaves or slaughter if they resisted them.
Pretty sure that is how every history book I ever read on that subject went, and I am sure that it may be viewed as such by the Spanish people of the time, but that's far from the truth of the facts according to evidence that they left behind them.

@@timothymilam732 Hmmm, almost a valid point when you take into consideration that one group of people are called victims while also practicing human trafficking, slavery, murder, theft of land and all kinds of barbarism, but someone else who does it is evil.
Did you ever sit and think that maybe history is circular?
So why are you crying about Natives who are as guilty as the Europeans?
Human trafficking is human trafficking, no matter who does it. Slavery is slavery, no matter who does it. Murder is murder, no matter who does it.
So we have to call an evil an evil no matter who does it. If we don't then we are hypocrites.
Cry for the innocent, no matter who it is.
But for the love of all that is holy, this crybaby victimization needs to stop and people need to look at it in it's eyes and call it what it is.
The Spanish only had better weapons. The Natives did the same crimes but no one wants to admit it.
Evil is evil no matter who does it. So call it evil.

Rather than complaining about Spanish students who don't speak English, as you Brits are wont to do, do you realize that YOU ARE IN THEIR COUNTRY? Why don't YOU speak Spanish? Typical. When your people come on "holiday" to Spain, you go to places where they serve--wait for it--British food--and I use the term loosely, and where they have established British radio so you can completely avoid people of another culture. Note below that uw1955 complain furthermore that the Spanish students "don't seem to be very engaged with their work"...probably because it isn't THEIR work, but YOURS. Idiots.
