A false spring tricked me- projects and maintenance lists- seed planting

- My life is changing with the weather, no more hibernating, winter seems to be over and I am a little disappointed because I have truly become more slow and have been enjoying my winter! Spring is here SO early, I have so much to do around the farm and for the cabin etc etc.there is also more exciting news to come very soon, with the weather, my life is changing!
Planting, major clean ups, pressure washing, sealing the log cabin to prevent carpenter bees from drilling into the logs (Grrrrr)...tending to the vehicles…so much to begin doing it gets me mentally overwhelmed!
I am shifting my perspective, my story line in life, I am grateful and happy to have these jobs to do because this means I have a home and a wonderful one at that! 🙏🏻
I hope where you are in the world you are able to enjoy your moments of slowness and not to work too hard when you have to pick up and move faster! Life is what we make it! ❤︎

Spring here in the southern Appalachians of N.C. has been giving a nice preview of my favorite time of year after a very long cold January. The re-birth and renewal of mother earth's springtime has me also cleaning my greenhouse out, clearing winters debris around the property, and spring bulb beds of leaves as daffodils are already poking their greenery and buds. So much to do as the days lengthen, the sun gets higher and warmer.
You really have your mind and hands full also on that pretty country farm, but try to slow your mind, set your pace and enjoy the post hibernation chores in an easy does it mode and enjoy all the little things that seem so overwhelming 🌱⚘️✌️🌞🍀

I have some dollars greens in pots and some beats, plus mustard in pots, some carrots in a small ground spot but don’t know when they are ready to harvest as I forgot to write the date I planted them… ha ha on me!

Good evening, Ida Jeanne! Hearing you say it’s Spring and time to plant seeds is a “Say what?” Mid-February…. That’s just amazing. I mean we’ve not had much of a winter here but we are not ready to plant anything yet. I did enjoy watching you sort through your inventory of seeds and so excited as you contemplated your harvest!
Listening to you list off all your chores and projects is a credit to your attention to detail of running your farm by yourself and to your time management skills 👌 There’s no doubt in my mind that this will be a successful year for you with many rewards!

Another great video Ida. The music in the background is so soothing. You do have a lot of seeds there and probably got the "itch" to get them started. Having a greenhouse sure helps to get the plants started and not have to worry about a cold day or a cold night. It is so nice to see that smile and its nice to see you preparing for the planting. Up here in PA we have to watch we don't start too soon as they "out of nowhere" comes a cold blast or a sudden snow fall. You mentioned a the song was playing in the background you want to get with it and finish it. I think it has a pretty sound. You do have a list there and remember "one step at a time". Good morning from Western NC, another great video ,really enjoyed your vocals in the background,spring is around the corner for sure, I have been doing yard work myself at my mom's house, I moved back in with her 2-3 years ago because of her health ,also working on building a cabin off grid,I plant a small garden of the basics, so there's a lot to do, I'm amazed at all you do. Have to say that's a great looking J40 you have, I had a 76 J60 it was the 4 door model like the other one you have, great 4x4's for sure,always enjoyed the videos have a wonderful day, Graylin

So warm and bright there Ida! All of a sudden so much to do. Another season of planting and renewal. Love your music. I think my John Deere will be hibernating for another couple of months in the barn before I’m ready to plant here. I like how you save all your seeds and kale is one of my favorites too. I've all ready started planting when groundhog said early spring I said yay .First thing popped in my head was English peas an cabbage. I've planted chickory with my dandelions I like them in a salad an I just couldn't leave the greens alone long enough to get the chickory root to make tea. I'd really like to try that tea. I may have to go down by creek an plant some so I will forget it an leave greens alone. Glad to see spring an your garden has always inspired me.

I remember beautiful apple blossums turning to brown due to a fake early Spring many times.
Once I got overly optimistic in planting and we got 17 inches of snow on March 20th.
Our frost cut off was May 10. Got freeze on May1st. No global warming back then either.
We are spraying for White Flies on Monday. Do you have any of those?

Yes Pat, I am definitely on the lookout for that cold snap that unfortunately if it comes is going to kill all kinds of blossoms that shoot out too early, I’m worried about that. I’m hoping the timing will work in our favor and will get the cold snap here soon before things really grow but I’m glad I’ve got heat mats in my greenhouse. I can turn them on when we do get the cold snap, I don’t think we have those white flies you’re talking about but now that you say something about that I remember the little teeny gnats that come out that are kind of a nuisance. Living in Washington State USA, I always used Valentines day to start my plants indoors, mainly using own seeds.
We, wife and I, would buy some new varieties but only pla need a few for comparison
Our utside garden plots some years was up to 2 acres as we planted, harvested, and canned for ourselves vessel and three sons who lived in cities, family's.
All the extras went to friends and to Vietnemese/Ca.mbodian immigrant families.

We found tat own seeds grew best after 3rdg3neration becoming climatized to soil and weather.

Hello Ida. I only live about 7 hours North of you (Maryland) but where I am it's warm for a few days and then it gets cold again. It was 60 degrees here on Friday but last week there was some mornings that was in the low 30s. You WILL be hearing those wild turkeys gobbling soon (especially in the early morning) if your warm Spring Like Temps hold.You certainly have lots to keep you busy, that's how I like it!! If I have nothing to do I usually get lazy or sleepy!😊 My job keeps me as busy as I can Handle!😊 I usually don't plant my flower garden till late April in case we get a late frost. Certain vegetable seeds, last certain number of years, but I typically will use them within three or four years and that’s a very good question. Oh, and Willa’s ball oh my goodness I guess we need to go look again!😆🐕🌼🥰🩷🤗

Lovely Creature and her coffee! The north wall of my greenhouse was the south wall of the house in Montana and our grey water ran through a pumice stone screen to be stored in barrels painted black along that wall. After a good sunny day heat would release through the night and our early plantings never froze. Lordy I do miss the early planting of seeds. I am by no means "organic" but growing our own veggies was a large part of our diet along with Elk meat not harvested by the hunters I guided. I was so much healthier while my children exhausted me. Just to sit in a green house and enjoy the damp smell of young plants before transplanting to the gardens made everything worthwhile.
While many enjoy the Gorgeous Lady in her Lovely red dress, I am envious of the time you are starting anew! My daughter has plans to go and start her next garden there and if i can make it out of here I believe that is my first destination this year. Slowing down does not mean ceasing to work, it just means you don't throw energy into foolish pursuits. You are on the right track Miss Ida, your future homestead will have the benefit of you choosing where and how your home and green houses layout with the land. I pray it fits a most successful ergonomic and efficient plan.

I'm jealous. Looking at possibly 6-10 inches of snow Tuesday here in New Hampshire. Can't wait for Spring to get here. You have quite the to do list to get ready for Springtime. But remember this. One project at a time and don't over stress about trying to get them done all at the same time.
It’s funny John I would rather be up there and have a real winter. I am so not ready. I don’t even feel like we had a winter we had about a week of it. It seems anyway gotta enjoy what we’ve got in front of us but yes, just one task at a time one day at a time, take good care!♥️

I am going to build my beds and fill them, starting with the bagster dumpster bag raised beds. the excavator guy finally finished my driveway, no more machine to make room for. next trip to my old house, I will see if I have any kale/collard/broccoli crossbreed seeds. big yummy greens. I also have elephant garlic there. I missed the proper planting season. i am leaving some of it there for the friend who bought my place, but I am bringing it up hte mountain. I plant my carrot top ends when I cut them off. carrots make seed really well from second year growth. I think I have a quart of seeds from rainbow carrots. maybe. I just got back from the grocery store and have food to put away... I am making bread dough to raise over night. I will use a little of it to make a couple of big ole pizzas! : ) really nice to come in and find a video from you. : ) George.

I don’t actually listen to myself, but I put my music in the channel videos. There was a brand of coffee that my Mom had that was mixed with chicory and it was her favorite.I liked it also but I couldn't tell any difference in the flavor. She was not happy when they quit offering it for sale. I just remember that it was fuller of flavor and it was smooth tasting. I miss those times.

Good morning Ida, terrific video. I never knew that planting certain flowers would be a huge boost to my vegetable gardens until I watched one of your videos and you explained that. They attracted so many pollinators like bees and butterflies and hummingbirds that were very beneficial and my veggie harvest grew like crazy. Do you refrigerate your seeds for long term or just keep them in a cool dark place? Looks like spring is a very busy time for you with all the planting and cleaning and horse stall/manure pile work but the reward will be so fulfilling with the fresh organic food you get from it. I just keep my seeds in tubs in mostly paper bags so they can breathe and they don’t hold moisture and get moldy, but just a cool dark shelf in my pantry and I’m so happy that you credit me with the flowers in the veggie garden but I think you were already doing that! I remember you planting sunflowers before we talked, I think but I’m so glad you are getting better and better each year with your gardening and more adventurous with it! I hope you got those cattle panels!😉☀️🥰🩷🌼
There's a guy who invented a computer planting program , sort of like a "QuickBooks " for plant scheduling. Interesting. I got another bulk pack, this one was from The Seed Guy on FB, and am pretty impressed at the content Linda puts out , diagrams, strategies , blogs etc. I'm still trying to grasp "companion planting" , and at least would love to do a "Three Sisters". The challenge will be to keep all the goddam deer out . Lazily, I tried to make a "microgreens" bin with Kale and a mix of other stuff but the Kale is dominating it. Probably 'cause its a cooler weather veggie. It's gonna get thinned out a bit later today as I make a salad. I still want to get some Lacinato Kale, and some dandelion seeds from Johnny's, That strain was stupendous. Big beefy leaves . We're supposed to get 6-12" tomorrow through tuesday, so I'll get out and play with the new camera. I just upgraded my tactical lighting, will send you my thoughts on that. Also possibly a cool hack for using vaping batteries in those 500 lumen LED shop lights that everybody loves for wrenching.

This used to be a dairy farm, so I think that the soil has retained wonderful fertilization!

It’s actually a 79 and I love that thing I bought it about six years ago I think maybe five years ago I had been looking for a long time and it was such a good deal and my hope is at some point to restore the body I love that truck🩷

I’m gonna update everybody really soon but no I have not stopped that whole goal. It’s just an extremely difficult process to do from scratch and being all alone I’m trying to be extremely careful with every step I make so I’ve gone really slow steady and I’m excited about sharing my new plans, but all in good time.
