    I configured an OpenVPN server on my firewall/gateway server VM, and set an unlikely tcp port as its entry on my router (to keep script kiddies out).
    I then simply use ssh -Y for any graphical application I might want to use remotely.
    I did use xrdp package once, it installs Xvnc and FreeRDP as a X to RDP layer.
    No real configuration needed on a server, just install the package and start the service.
    I didn't try it on a machine that actually has a desktop though...., it functions as an RDP terminal server, much like XDM in network mode does.

    My personal experience with teamviewer linux to linux and windows to linux is pretty good. A few lockups, but mostly its snappy and working well. All VNC type remote controllers have been horribly laggy for me. teamviewer has a file transfer too, which is useful for some cases.

    I have an issue reconnecting once my computer goes into sleep or is restarted. I've tried TeamViewer and Chrome remote desktop. How do you keep the connection active no matter which state the computer is in?

  • @michadybczak4862
    @michadybczak4862 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, I tried to use open source apps but I just don't know how to use them. With teamviewer, I just started the app and the rest is self-explanatory. Remmina? Uh, it sits there and waits for something, I don't what and how to obtain it. This is also a reason that for many people open source sounds bad: they imagine hideous looking, complicated and primitive apps and in many areas that is true, luckily not always but still, those areas where open source has nothing to shop up are still there.
    It's also important to connect seamlessly with windows machines because the world is full of those and our friends usually still use them.
    Thanks for showing the chrome way to remote control. I always saw people talking about it but never know how to get it there. I just installed some chrome remote control and it was like reminna, waiting for some configuration I never knew how to do, or maybe never had time to research it, but... why would I if I could just use teamviewer where I don't need to waste any time learning it? A well-designed app should be intuitive.

    HI great channel just found it. I am new to linux and having recenctly put ubuntu on a laptop tried chrome remote desktop. I noted after installing the extension that I could no longer login (locally at the keyboard) to the machine. I even tried ctrl alt 3, but it would not take my password. so I went to another pc, and removed the "account" from the chrome remote desktop page. well then I could log in from the keyboard, but it fails the first time I type the password every time. so screw it I downloaded again and instead of installing ubuntu gnome I tried kde to see if it made a difference. exact same thing. after installing the extension I become completely locked out, and after deleting the account (and the extension from the computer) I still then have to type the password multiple times to get in. Am I missing something here? can this only be me? is it unusual (I hope so) that an extension could damage your linux installation to the point where you can't even log in? depressing because honestly, what could be better than getting your desktop through your browser. Thoughts welcome, thanks.

    Thanks for the video but none of these are available on Linux Mint 20. I have tried everything now to try to get remote desktop connections to work on Mint. I am otherwise very happy with it since moving but this really is a good reason to go back to Windows. Remote desktop is so easy on Windows and virtually impossible on Mint.

      I'm certified in Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp. I setup a server farm using it and am quite adapt in it. However, I don't know how useful a video like this would be as the software licenses are thousands of dollars and not many people are seeking this type of information.

    • @AndreasBlochberger
      @AndreasBlochberger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisTitusTech Well, for the average user it would indeed not be very interesting, but for corporate users looking for an alternative to a Windows remote desktop with Citrix, it might be very helpful to see how it performs and how it is to be setup.
      Did you try a Linux desktop with Citrix already? I would especially want to know, if desktop effects can be used in such an environment. Currently in my company, we are switching to a remote desktop solution and we're using xrdp right now, and that does not perform very well.

  • @contournut5726

    I'm surprised nomachine isn't good for remote use. It's been like 15 years, but I used to use nomachine nx for low bandwidth uses because it was so good for it, where traditional VNC was unusable. These days traditional VNC is barely acceptable.
    I usually just use ssh to forward w/e port I put x11vnc on, and then I've got some fancy options that help with the terrible performance. But it is a bit of a setup, and I believe it's just broken if wayland?
    Nothing's really very good for remote use, IMO. On Windows remote desktop is sort of almost passable, but I can never seem to convince Windows to turn on the best compression schemes and turn off the animations at the same time. The only thing that really feels like you're local is a text shell, but then you're limited to what you can do there. And if there's any latency ssh -X is basically unusable now, which is too bad because it would usually be plenty.

      The crd --setup command he uses creates a .chrome-remote-desktop-session file in your home directory. What I had to do was create that file myself and add the environment I wanted to use. I'm on KDE Neon so my .chrome-remote-desktop-session file looks like this:
      export $(dbus-launch)
      exec /usr/bin/startplasma-x11
      Then I saved the file and did a reboot for good measure. At that point the Chrome Remote Desktop website let me add the machine.

    You forgot to give a "proprietary closed source" disclaimer for all you gaming videos. hehe >.<
    I've read the business case for the free software model, and am convinced it's superior in most cases.. but I struggle to see it work for games. The closest I've seen is pay-what-you-want models, like the Humble Indie Bundle, which has had some commercial success, and ad-supported games, or even free-to-play... but none were really opensource.
    Still if linux is going to take over, we cannot expect everyone to have reverence for the philosophy behind free software. Most people don't know any different, or care. On the other hand, opensource proponents are rightfully concerned that the proprietary folks will contaminate their pure platform, and drag all their baggage along with them... which might cause some resistance to linux adoption. I don't know how to resolve this.
