Welcome to the wonderful comforting, inspirational world of IU. I discovered IU through her acting in the K drama My Mister. I was about 3/4 of the way through when I discovered that she was a singer and a very good and popular singer in Korea. Her story is quite remarkable as well. She grew up dirt poor and had to livecwith her grandmother in a single room that was infested by roaches. So badly infested that they had to finally leave and the entire building was destroyed. Her parents had lost all of the money money after they cosigned a loan for a family member and things went bad. IU start auditioning when she was 13, going by herself or with a friend. She was rejected 20 times before being signing with a small company. She debuted 10 months later in Sept of 2008 at the age of 15. The songvwas Lost Child which is a very good song and showed off her vocal talents but the subject matter of the song was not well recieved being sung by a 15 year old. The agency then made the decision to have her start singing bubblegum type music which was better recieved. In 2010 she became a national thing in Korea with her song Good Day. Since then she has dominated the Kpop charts in Korea posting the most #1 hits of any group or soloist by a factor of 3. She has more All Kilks and Perfect All Kills then anyone. IU starting writing her own songs in 2013 and most of her songscsince then have been written by her or with another writer. She also composes some of her songs and produces some of them as well. She has won Best Producer, Best Composer and Best Song writer awards multiple times. IU is a great story teller, using her songs and MV's to tell deep and meaningful stories. She uses her MV's to add depth and meaning to the lyrics of the songs. And she will continue a story over multiple songs. The best example of this is a sing she sang in 2011 called You & I. It us about a love affair where the male character is in a coma so IU uses a time machine to go forward in time in hopes that they can be together. She set the date to Dec 31 2019. In Dec of 2019 she releases a song from her current album call Above the Time . Remember that this is 8 years later. Where her lover is now out of his coma but the two are now stuck alternate space and time. The fabric of space and time get torn for a brief moment that allow them to be together shortly. Off this same album is part 3 of this story call Blueming and part 4 ends the story in 2021, 10 years later with the song Strawberry Moon. In January of 2023 Rolling Stone Magazine added IU to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2022 she became the 1st female to headline a concert at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, The Golden Hour. Kpop soloist don't tour outside of Southeast Asia. There are many barriers to that due to language, culture etc. The only kpop stars to hold concerts in the US or Eupore have been people who were part of a group that toured in the West and build a fan base from that. After the 2022 Golden Hour concert IU decided she was going to break out of those limitations as well and in Dec of 2023 her first world tour that included 8 western cities, London, Berlin, New York, Atlanta, DC, Chicago, Oakland and LA. She had many sleepless nights worrying about the Western leg of her tour. When tickets went on sale all 8 concerts sold out in 10 minutes. There is much much more yo discover about IU. But one things stands out is that she actually sounds even better live. Enjoy the journey.
