      +relatablair This music video is as absolutely amazing as Odesza themselves are unique. I live in WA State and I dated a girl who went to the same college as Odesza for four years. This video pretty much sums up the type of people and their personal missions that are realized through a very progressive Western Washington University. It is like I have always said, people do not end up at WWU by happenstance. You attend that college because you wish to create and enrich this world, not conquer and destroy people and their lives through shrewd business.

    The contrast of creation and destruction of human nature. Fire and water, passion and anger, adaptivity and fluidity: they're all aspects of human nature from our most primitive state as cavemen to our modern state as artists, warriors, leaders, and explorers. Our basic needs and our basic fear of death have never changed. Human nature is timeless.

    "Black and white footage of gripping historically-influenced events, starting from humanity’s inception, bring deeper meaning to the lyrics “It’s only water, It’s only fire, It’s only love.” Conceptually, we see the power of carnal love to destroy: an idea not many dare to idle on. The video itself displays various examples of the things we, as multifaceted emotional beings, do for love (whether it be for a person, for material possessions, or for power). Shedding new light to the lines, “What is lust if it’s not being by yourself?” and “It’s only slaughter, We’re only liars, It’s only blood,” we are told time and again that love is often the purveyor of death and destruction."
    "By showing people driven by a lust for something almost unattainable (coupled with great cinematography), Odesza’s video challenges our sentiment toward what we may believe when we think about love."

    I think the video starts by hinting at Cain & Abel, the first murder in Biblical history. Then we see Cleopatra, who died committing suicide by a snake. Then we have a pair of Gladiators which I think are supposed to represent Spartacus, because then we have Boudicca (woman with the wolf skin) and Hannibal (crossing the alps with his elephants) other famous enemies of Rome. Then we have Joan of Arc being burned at the stake. Then its Cortez discovering gold in Aztec Mexico. Not entirely sure which volcano that's supposed to be...and I think the railroad might be the Trans-Pacific Railway built across Canada. Obviously what follows is WWI and WWII. Then the 60s and the 'free love' movement. Moon landing. And then lastly the Arab Spring or the Occupy movement (or just civil unrest in the 21 Century, foreshadowing). Lastly we see a subversion of our expectations regarding the Cain & Abel story, and Cain leaves without harming anyone.

    I love the concept behind this music video. To me, the lyrics portray fire, water, and love as forces of nature. Purely, they are only fire, only water, and only love. When wielded by humans with motives, they become constructive or destructive. Tools for creating empires and relationships. Tools for destroying and conquering. It's only slaughter. We're only liars. It's only blood. The destruction is justified time and time again. It's not a big deal. It happens all the time. It's part of life. It's only fire. It's only water. It's only love.

  • @arichards761

    this song is about the struggle of humanity. it shows how history repeats itself, all the things that motivate and shape us, love, death, discovery, war, as the human race we've been through already. that's why the song tries to belittle these things by saying 'its only love' or ' you're only crying you're only dying you're only dead.' its funny because these things are literally the driving force of humanity yet the song belittles in a mocking way. its beautiful to know that our struggle only means as much as the meaning to it.

    • @strider9390
      @strider9390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s an interesting interpretation. I like to look at it as the fact that all of human history is responsible by the caveman not bludgeoning the other caveman and his partner to death while they slept. Instead of killing them, he was smart enough to “carry the fire with him”, thus extending human civilization to the present day.

    I love the ambition of this. A meditation of humanity. How we let greed and fear overwhelm our basic decency. Almost too optimistic, because in almost every scenario, the humanity takes over in the end and people realize what they're doing...but I'm pretty sure this is not actually the case. Anyway, great track, fantastic video, bravo!

    Historical moments pictured, for the nerds out there:
    "Discovery" of Fire ~ 1 million years ago
    Queen Cleopatra of Egypt - 30 BC - Cleopatra has an asp brought to her, to commit suicide in Egypt, when Marc Antony's attempt to control Rome fails, and Romans attack Alexandria.
    Roman Gladiators - 300BC - 380AD - Although the round shield would make him a Thraex, the armor of the Thraex is very similar to a Murmillo, which is the "type" of gladiator that Spartacus was. Possibly Spartacus, then?
    Gaulish woman watches Hannibal crossing the Alps - 218BC
    Not sure of the location / age / significance of the castle
    Catholic / Anglican witch hunts. Possibly Joan of Arc (1431)
    Spanish discovery of gold in the Americas - 1492/93
    Random volcanic eruption
    American West 19th/20th century
    American soldier, First World War - 1917-1918 (American involvement)
    German SS w/ 'Totenkopf' - 1933-1945
    Civil Rights / Sexual Revolution - 1955-1970
    First space walk - 1965
    Riot - 21st century, based on automobile and police garb

      The volcano may refer to one of those big eruptions.
      Laki 1783 VEI 6
      Tambora 1815 VEI 7
      Krakatau 1883 VEI 6

      Castle could represent Rouen where Joan of Arc was imprisoned or the location of where the English landed in France during the Hundred Years War
      Thomas already listed a few possible candidates for the volcano but it could also be Mount Pelee eruption 1902

    • @cordelia177
      @cordelia177 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      French castle and battleground could allude to the battle of Agincourt (during 100 years war)

    This video is artistically beautiful. And they put together one awesome video. But when I hear the song, it reminds me of folklore. Something like Cleopatra which they did include in this. Because the mind goes to ancient places. However for what its worth ODESZA your video is one of the best videos for a song ever!

    I read "It's Only" is about the cardinal rule of love, that love can destroy. And the anger and frustration of love lost.
    Knowing that This song became my song for my mother's passing and got me through a lot of dark emotions. Because i realized..
    Love can be like throwing yourself off of a cliff. It isn't the fall that kills you... But, the sudden stop.
    I miss you always, Momma..

      +AthleticKiwi I think it means that fire and water have been the catalyst for destruction our entire human history, but it is the creative love energy that is by far the most powerful thing in the Universe.

    • @zezgotpwned
      @zezgotpwned 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Beancrew49 possibly, but the last scene returning to the first shows that the dude didn't actually bash their heads in while they slept and took some of their fire - not sure what it means in the grand scheme of the video but potentially mixed perceptions of things?

    • @beancrew49
      @beancrew49 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +the-1337-one I think it shows that even in our most primitive state (caveman) we have the power to choose creation over destruction. It left me with the sense that there is hope for humanity.
