    I bought a 2001 740il and it's been the best car I've ever owned! I love it...even after 15 years of driving it, I still get compliments on its looks, and you can't beat the reliability of this awesome car! Love it..in fact..looking for another one with a little lower mileage than my current BMW!

      I had one for 14 years and I have now acquired a 2000 740i w sport package just like the one here in the video that has 70K on it. I'm ready for the next 14 years! The best highway cruiser ever.

    I had the turn of the century S-Class and the XJ8. The E38 is better than both those rivals for driving experience and looks.
    My current car is a 1997 E38 740i M-Sport. I'm not even looking at AutoTrader any more.

    The car in the video looks soooo good! This is the best looking sedan EVER, even better than an E39 M5 and I mean when I say it - when you've owned an E39 M5 you become fanatical about it:) But then, these are the cars I grew up with and that sticks into your brain; none of the newer cars will have this much of an impact as an E39 or E38. Not to mention the fact that the design language of the the modern cars is just too busy, too flashy, it's essentially a race about who can get the most attention/sales. Great point about the closing doors, it's just sooooo satisfying!

    Late response here but the E38 is an incredible car! Both in design, looks and driving! It’s the true meaning of “ultimate driving machine “ timeless classic and modern enough at the same time! It’s the automotive best kept secret! Nothing compares. The w220 is soft bouncy luxury boat! I own one of these too! Both great cars but the E38 740i sport is exceptional in the way it makes you feel behind the wheel. E38 sport, E39 M5, M roadster all exceptional cars that will be in fashion forever.

  • @Ready72000
    @Ready72000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I own one of these 2001 Sports, as well as a 2001 740iL. They still look great, timeless good looks, as long as you are running the correct wheels (style 37 M-parallels). I love them both, but I love the Sport a little more - it is a fantastic driver's car and is my daily driver.
    I honestly feel as if I know a secret few people know: how to buy an amazing German sedan at a 90% discount. If you buy an E38, buy the nicest 2001 you can find. That one will be the best AND cheapest one to buy and own.

    BMW design language from that era just ages better than all the competition . Even now as well whilst people criticised the e65 but most car manufacturers copied that design language over time . Also the interior tech eventually everyone now uses some sort of their own version of i drive. The e38 and e65 came with technology firsts . Note the sat nav in the e38 was probably the first in a production car. 🇿🇦

    Thank you sir ! Very inspiring video , great job! I have never owned a German vehicle but this particular car has been sitting in my mind for the past 6-7 months. I had many different cars in the past 20 years all Japanese Honda or Toyota . But my next one will be a E38 despite that now, in 2020 this will be 20 year old vehicle I will give it a try. Btw beautiful place too ... where is that the great pacific NW. cheers from Seattle , you can not beat our summers but oh boy once September hits the weather is miserable

      Cheers! I wish you the best in your E38 search. This is definitely a car to own if its on your car bucket list. This was filmed just north of the border, close to Vancouver BC. I can totally relate with the 10 months of rain we get every year. But other than that, can't really complain about this region :)

    A fleeting nod to fuel consumption was made at 9.46 - the fact is that this car does 14mpg (urban) and just 19mpg (highway). Only young, starry-eyed high-earners would dream of buying one. My old Volvo S80 D5 SE Lux is nowhere near as fast as this car but it will cruise along the highway at similar (legal) speeds while doing over 50mpg. It's also just as luxuriously appointed and with almost as many 'toys'.

    I see more S class and Lexus LS than Jaguar and 7 series which probably points to reliability issues .
    But I agree that the 7 series is easily the best looking ,best driver focused, and most rounded executive car of the 2000s

    Can't say I agree with the markets you described. The 220 had a near cult appreciation when it came out among those in the technology sector. It was groundbreaking. You would see software and Silicon Valley execs in the 220 (not the E38, at that time, as it was outdated). Either way, they were both used in conspicuous ways and both have benefits the other could use.
    The Bruno Sacco-designed 220 is not an inferior design to me (must compare M Sport and AMG package to be fair) but the E38 is the best BMW has managed since.

    • @WestVanGarage

      To give you some context, the first owner of this car pretty much checked out every single box on the spec sheet which included a heated steering wheel and phone controls. And since the sport wheel didn't have those, you had to go to the big 4 spoke steering wheel.

    • @kinderutz
      @kinderutz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @WestVanGarage
      @WestVanGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, this is the real M-sport. The reason I'd say it went that fast was because I only went 70% on the throttle and that acceleration was filmed at 3000ft above sea level.

    Sorry buddy but I can’t agree with you in regards to this bmw being better than the S Class W140 which is the car it really competed with. Any person in the auto industry knows for a fact that the S Class 92-99 beat this BMW up in sales and not only that proved its reliability and luxury amenities. Everyone knows the W140 S class of that time was competition for Rolls Royce. I still like this 7 more than the new 7 but S class like you said puts these cars in the shadow. I like your video by the way

    • @WestVanGarage
      @WestVanGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - but the first owner of this car ticked every single box available on its build sheet. One option he wanted was a heated steering wheel, and the 3 spoke didn't have it. Only the 4 spoke had heated steering at that time.

      I know what you mean, but big car media outlets like MotorTrend, Top Gear, etc. always seem to praise the S-Class, which gives the perception that the 7 is inferior. In reality, both are excellent in different ways. I personally prefer the E38 to the W220, and I'm sure others prefer the w220 over the E38.

    • @WestVanGarage
      @WestVanGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a sport, I've verified this is many ways. The main is running the car at 2500rpm in 5th gear and making sure it does 130km/hr to see if it has the higher stall speed torque converter. The original owner wanted heated steering, which is why it came with the 4-spoke, rather than the 3 spoke wheel. The headliner was replaced and is aftermarket, most likely because the headliners in these sag over time.
