MMA and boxing are similar enough that a boxer can fight in a cage with no MMA training (which pretty much seemed like Shields did) but they'd probably lose as they've got no kicks, wrestling or BJJ although it could go like Ray Mercer vs Tim Sylvia where Mercer knocked him out in 9 seconds.
The first 2 rounds of Shields vs Elkins showed why boxers shouldn't go straight into MMA but her winning it in the 3rd was actually quite impressive. It was terrible matchmaking though to give her a BJJ fighter with no stand up.

@@ThoughtCrimez starting to late isn't a problem, many great boxers started late. Rocky Mariano started at 23 I believe. Deontay just never truly had BOXING skill. He has power just not real fundamental boxing skill.
@ICEcold SC That is what I meant by stating late and I agree. He started to utilize fundamental boxing skills way too late in his career. He is gifted but if he had started with the fundamentals when he first started boxing, he would be superior to where he is now. Even starting late by adding technique in, he gave Tyson a run for his money BUT Tyson is still the superior boxer.
