    Nice review and actually one of the better ones on this amp. Quite the entertaining vid as well. I wish more guitarists who do amp reviews would do the same and just fool with the knobs while playing. That really shows the capabilities sound wise better than just showing a few sounds clean and dirty.

    Just bought this amp, i like that your adjusted the knobs while a riff was playing to hear in time tone changes.

    Best review of an orange amp I've found in 2 weeks. I really liked how you separated the different tones and made it very easy for me to hear what you were trying to portray with the amp. Your review lead to purchase an orange amp, idk if that means anything to you lol. Either way thanks.

    I appreciate the shots of the knob settings. Gave me a great starting point. I have the same head and their 2 x 12" closed back v30 cab. I've wondered for a very long time how to use an overdrive with the dirty channel without turning the end result into pure mud. This was totally helpful. Thank you and best regards. Cheers!

    a sense of humour is good, like the demo. In fact bought the amp, very versatile amp but lack of onboard reverb gets me looking for a Fender again.

      I have to agree, if you want onboard reverb, Fender have some of the best of the kind. Although they're not exactly metal amps :S
      So, it depends on your style.

      Thought I'd be happy with a pedal but much easier with onboard effects, I like to travel as light as I can on gigs, now I lug around a Boss GT pedal. not to worry, the amp has great tone.Thanks for your time ,cheers

    Wow that tone is really good for how small the amp is! What kind of metal style do you suggest with this? Looking to buy this for bedroom stuff but also to have a good small amp to take to rehearsals. Are there any other mirco or small sized amps you would suggest? Or is this one pretty good and I should stick with this?

    • @thane_snipes
      @thane_snipes  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Guitar Pick
      You could probably get a similar tone out of the Orange Micro Terror, and that little lunchbox is super affordable. Just make sure to boost the signal with a tubescreamer or similar. I wouldn't really suggest either amp for modern metal tones, as they have a distinctly British characteristics.

  • @markbennett1541
    @markbennett1541 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Very helpful. In your opinion, do you think, with the help of a compression pedal, you could get that metal tone tighter (less runny)? Great playing by the way.

    • @thane_snipes
      @thane_snipes  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words Mark. I don't think a compressor pedal would do you much good. For tightening the tone, by far the most effective method is using a tubescreamer style pedal as a volume boost and tone control (to cut some of the low end). Even with the use of such a pedal though, you won't get that ballsy modern tone you can expect from a 5150 or Dual Rectifier or such. If you're playing in Eb standard, drop D or E-standard, this amp will sound pretty friggin' sweet though. Anything lower and I would recommend looking elsewhere because of the woofy and muddy low end present in this amp.

    • @markbennett1541
      @markbennett1541 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kadence thanks for the reply. Yeah I'm probably gonna play in drop C or B. But in my guitar I do have a set of bare knuckle divebombs which have perfect saturation but are still really tight.
      I really like this amp because of the option of doing lower wattage and not having to drag around a huge amp head.

    • @weskergeorge97
      @weskergeorge97 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You think something like a tube-screamer (plus an EQ pedal, to boost the mids a bit and cut the bass) wouldn't be enough to focus the sound when playing in D standard or Drop C? What tube/hybrid amp would you recommend that has a similar sound and isn't too expensive (possibly cheaper than the Dual Terror) and takes pedals well?

      It is possible to get a completely clean tone in my experience, depending on the output of your guitar pickups and so on, but it's not ideal. Also, as mentioned, if your output to the amp is high, say if you use active pickups or a boost pedal of sorts, the pre-amp tubes would overload, even at extremely low gain. I would go for a different amp for that kind of versatility requirement, perhaps a solid state, if that's not a problem for you. I have an Ibanez TB100h amp head as well. Solid state, 100w, dirt cheap if you get it secondhand and it does some pretty good gainy tones as well as some great cleans. It's got built in reverb and two separate channels, and with the Footswitch pedal, there's really no reason to turn it down. I would also add that the TB412a cab that came with it in some packages back in the day is surprisingly good. It's not the best build quality, but the sound justifies that shortcoming.

      Completely unmanageable if you have high output pickups or actives. On my Start the cleans are phenominal

    I can't choose between or15, dark terror, dual terror and Jim Root terror.
    I want to play both rock and metal (black/death) and want to use it for my apartment and to record black metal.
    I will not rehearse with the band so I won't compete with a drummer.

      WOOLgum i n have an orange micro dark terror. It fits perfectly thet purpose that you describe. I changed the preamp tube and sounds tighter. I have also jammed with drumer and bassist and it is loud enough to cut through.

      A used Peavey 6505/5150 is the only amp you'll ever need for modern metal. I have a Bugera 6262 which sounds nearly identical. I'll have a demo on that coming out some time in the future. You know, when I'm finished writing the riffs.

    The fat channel is supposed to be gainer than the tiny terror channel. So either yours is broken, or you didn’t listen to it that well... at least you didn’t say that they’re the same, like another reviewer said ;)
    Good review, though.

    Hey bud great review! I've been for someone to boil down this amp professionally, and luckily you knew your shit. Question here if you can answer: My band I'm currently in is of Post-hardcore/Alt. rock style. Not metal or any crazy high gain sound of any sort, but we do play Drop B and C# standard. And I know how you brought up how it'll muddy up in those tunings. I'm looking to trade my Egnater Tweaker 88 head for a Dual Terror. In your opinion, would the Dual Terror still be a good investment in where I stand?
    Ps- We're called To Live Again from Dallas, TX if you need a reference. Album is "Far From Home" Music is anywhere on Itunes, Spotify, Google Playback, Amazon, you can't miss it ;)

      Nick Nazem
      Hi Nick! Thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I don't know exactly what you're expecting to use the Dual Terror for, especially when you have a Tweaker 88. I wouldn't trade the tweaker for the Dual Terror, nor do I think the Dual Terror would be the best option for you in it's price range. I looked up your music and it seems you have a fairly modern sound, with the big bottom end and the crispy top end that typically come with American amps (6L6 power tubes and similar carry these traits very well). If you're looking for a tone that will blend with that style nicely and the low wattage is something you're looking for, I recommend something like the Laney IRT15H, Jet City JCA22H or the Randall RD20H.
      I haven't personally played any of those amps (sadly I'm not rich D:), but they sound like they they're in the ballpark of what you're looking for.

    How you gonna do an amp demo with an OD pedal lol

    • @thane_snipes
      @thane_snipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The OD pedal doesn't add any drive. It's acting as a boost and toneshaper before hitting the preamp. It's a very common technique for modern metal tones.

    • @Jerryleedlelee
      @Jerryleedlelee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kadence it is and I have no issues with it but an amp demo shouldn’t have any additional support, it’s the same as EQing after recording. Demos should be raw tone

    • @thane_snipes
      @thane_snipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jerryleedlelee
      And the OD used as a boost is part of the "raw tone" I was going for. Where do you draw the line? Should we stop using cabinets with our amp heads because they naturally low pass the signal from the amp head? Should we not use custom pickups in our guitars because it changes the response of the amp? Should tone knobs be disallowed because they remove top end from the raw signal?
      I'm not saying you're wrong, what I am saying is that the kind of tone I'm going for and that I prefer for high gain metal is unattainable with most amplifiers without boosting and tone shaping the raw signal. That doesn't make my approach wrong, it's just outside of your personal preference, which to be fair, is totally fine. My problem with your statement is when you say "Demos SHOULD be raw tone". Not only have you not defined very well what "raw tone" means, but you're also implying that there's an arbitrary line in the sand when it comes to what "raw tone" is and you haven't defined it very well, or at all, and now you're using said arbitrary line to judge my amp demo, when really, it's just your personal tone preference that's getting the better of you.
      As a last point, I believe it's quite common, even with amp demos, to high pass and low pass the final signal. Is that "wrong"?

    • @Jerryleedlelee
      @Jerryleedlelee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kadence if I do a bare knuckle pickup demo and my signal chain has a chorus pedal and delay, would you be satisfied with that?
      No, how are you going to hear the original sound of the pickups when you have something altering it? The same goes for this, if I buy this amp solely based on your demo I’d be disappointed that I’d have to drop another 100-150 on an OD pedal to get the nice tone that’s coming from your video.
      Everything is going to affect the tone, the type of cab you use, the type of mic you use, definitely the type of guitar you use and whether or not your volume and tone pots are 100% or 50% these are things everybody factors in when watching amp or pickup demos.
      What is unnecessary to factor in is when distortion or over drive pedals are pushing tubes. I get it, it’s the tone that you go for and it sounds fine but you’re not “demoing” the amp at this point you’re demoing your tone.

    • @thane_snipes
      @thane_snipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jerryleedlelee
      Isn't the point ultimately to hear how the amp handles one's personal tone preference though? Would you prefer if I tested every amp with all the dials at 12 o'clock for a "fair comparison" for instance? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no, that's not very useful for anyone. To answer your question, if you did a BKP demo and had chorus and delay on signal, as long as it's appropriate for the arrangement you're recording, and any comparison you do to any other pickup is fed through the same signal chain, then yea, I would be satisfied with that. It's more of a real life scenario than what I described with all the knobs at 12 o'clock, and thus, I think it'd be more useful for the listener. I suppose we can agree to disagree at the end of the day. I think we both fall somewhere in the middle of the extremes we've both described, just not in exactly the same place. I appreciate your input though, and the civil tone of discussion.
