This is true that Monica Seles could have won that quarter-final against Zvereva and then beaten Natalia Tauziat in the semi-final at Wimbledon 1998. But it is clear that Jana Novotna, who had defeated Venus Williams and Martina Hingis in the previous rounds, would have easily dominated her. Let’s remember that Novotna and Seles were tied at 4 wins each, but since Seles’s return in 1995, Novotna led 3-2 against her. Novotna had also beaten Seles 3 times in a row between 1996 and 1997 on surfaces where Monica Seles was supposed to be stronger, like hard courts or clay. Furthermore, Jana Novotna had recently lost in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 3 sets against Seles, but she had won the first set, and the match was extremely tight and balanced. In other words, it seems impossible that Seles could have beaten Jana Novotna in the Wimbledon final. So whether in the quarter-finals or the final, it doesn't matter, as she would not have been able to win Wimbledon.
@@Mehd.J81 yes and grass is BY FAR Jana's best surface, and BY FAR Seles's worst. So if she was usually losing to her on other surfaces in 96-98, she would never beat her on grass.
Novotna was a bigtime choke artist in finals. She managed to beat a Tauziat who was a nobody in slams. Seles would have played played exceptional in that final.
@@ServingUptheTNeither did Graf. Novotna would have beaten Monica in any other round except the final where she would have choked, much like with Hingis in ‘97 and Graf in 93. But I’m glad Novotna finally won Wimbledon.
@@jess4metoo Yes but even Graf fans aren't saying she could have won this Wimbledon, despite that she is light years superior and more accomplished a grass player than Seles.
If Seles had won this match she could have gone all the way to win the title. " If" of course.....it is what it is. That was the same year she should have won the French Open.....well ...
Considering she was 2-3 vs Novotna in the 96-98 period, and none of those matches were on grass which is BY FAR Jana's best surface, and BY FAR Seles's worst I highly doubt her beating her.
Monica , simply the best ever
She wad beloved.
This was Seles' best chance to win Wimbledon in her second career (post stabbing) and she missed the opportunity **

Highly unlikely she would have beaten novotna on grass in the final - she struggled with low slicing and volleys which were novotnas strength
