Godafoss, also known as the Waterfall of the Gods, is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. Located in the north of Iceland, between Akureyri and Lake Myvatn, this waterfall is famous for its majestic beauty and the legend associated with it.
The name "Godafoss" means "Waterfall of the Gods" in Icelandic. According to legend, in the year 1000, Thorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, a pagan chieftain, converted to Christianity after seeing a vision of Jesus Christ in the waterfall. He threw all of his pagan idols into the waterfall, hence the name.
The Godafoss waterfall is horseshoe-shaped and plunges down 11 meters (37 feet) with a width of 113 meters (370 feet). The water flows from the Skjálfandafljót River, a river that flows through a 7,000-year-old lava field from the Trölladyngja volcano.
Visitors to Godafoss can walk to an observation deck for panoramic views of the waterfall. There is also a trail that leads to the base of the waterfall, where visitors can feel the power and sound of the rushing water.
Godafoss is a popular destination for visitors to Iceland. The waterfall is part of the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route that passes through some of Iceland's most famous attractions.
