I think this could work. One of the problems Fisker has, as most new startups, is the lack of a dealer network and questions of how will my car be serviced in 10 years. If people can go to their local Nissan dealer and see/purchase a Fisker it will be a lot more appealing.

4:25 You may not know this, living in Australia: but utes are not available in North America.
Due to the way CAFE standards work (larger vehicles have looser emissions standards): there is a lack of small and medium pickup trucks available in general.
But since this UTE is going to be fully electric: the CAFE standards are not a factor.
With costs going up: I think there may be a large market for a small pickup/ute (for the right price).

I actually think this could be good for both companies. Nissan can build much better Fiskers than their current builders, and if Fisker shares their knowledge on EVs with
Nissan, that could make their EVs better too. So rather than a bail out of one or the other, a partnership instead.
It will definitely be interesting to see where this goes.

Fisker produces a car which is mostly ready for prime time. Their top management has money management issues. Nissan may be able to "tweak" the design with no major changes, begin production in the US, and stop the hemorrhaging of money from the management portion of Fisker. Mr. Fisker may be a fine designer and marketing guru, but he is at least five years away from earning a Mary Barra level salary. So is Mary, but that's a different story.

I watched that review that said the fisker Ocean was the worst car ever. Most of what he said highlighted problems that likely can be fixed with software updates. He was particularly mad that he couldn't get a stable Bluetooth connection with his phone. He also said the car really had its strong points and uniqueness, honestly I think it would be cool to own one of these someday if they ever iron out the bugs. I'm glad then it looks like they're not going bankrupt.

You haven't read the latest Nissan earnings or heard about any financial news concerning Nissan and Renault... Anyway, Nissan's net equity is 42 billion dollars... To prepare a platform for a car like Alaska, you need at least 1.5 billion dollars... So for 400m, Nissan is going to buy part of the rights to produce the Alaska as their own and pay a percentage for each sale to Fisker... It won't be the first time in automotive history... In addition, Nissan earned tons of money lately because of a deal they made with Renault...

Makes sense. Nissan can just take over Fisker and give Fisker shareholders stock in Nissan so it won't really cost them anything.

When the SUV craze started here in the US, some manufacturers were caught with their proverbial pants down and had to act quickly to stay in the game. Honda wasn't ready yet, so they worked out a deal with Isuzu to sell one of their SUVs (I think it was the Rodeo) as the Honda Pilot for the first year or so. I'm surprised more legacy automakers haven't done that with EV startups that have done a lot of the legwork ahead of time.

    • @baronvonjo1929

I actually was thinking about this.
I think its actually smarter to not jump onto every new thing.
I started thinking about it, and in hindsight being late to innovations in certain industries is bad.
However you normally only hear about companies that failed to get on the bandwagon soon.
One thing to consider is all the new things that were thought were going to blow up actually didn't. Lots of times there are headlines about how some new game changer will break the stats quo. However most do not and they fall into obscurity.
One thing I can think of is the digital gouges in the late 80s. People probably thought that would have taken off but didn't for another 20 years.
Point being companies do keep a eye out for what the next big thing is. But lots of new stuff ends up not going anywhere and forgotten about.

    • @JustWasted3HoursHere
      @JustWasted3HoursHere 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@baronvonjo1929In the case of some legacy automakers, especially in Japan, they either bet on the wrong horse (hydrogen fuel cells) or decided that EVs were never going to go anyway and did nothing in that space. Toyota and Honda, for example, both spent well over ten years and billions of dollars on hydrogen fuel cell development and after all that time they have almost nothing to show for it: In the entire US there are only about 57 hydrogen fuel cell stations and all of them except one are in California. Combined, Toyota and Honda and a few others sell less than 10,000 HFC cars per year. Hyundai also developed HFC cars, but they did something that the others did not: They also invested in BEV technology and as a consequence they are miles ahead of the rest of the Asian market. The sad thing is, on paper, HFC looks like a dream: Refill in about the same amount of time as an ICE car. At a time when BEV cars were taking 45 minutes or longer to recharge this seemed like the answer, but they've taken so long that BEVs have almost caught up: Hyundai and Kia EVs can charge to 80% in less than 18 minutes and that number will continue to fall.
Anyways, yeah, it wasn't super obvious that BEVs were the way to go but even after Tesla and others were showing that it can work, some companies still refused to see the light. I hope they are able to catch up and prosper.

The models produced by Magna Steyer are Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, Mercedes Benz G-class, BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra. And now also the Fisker Ocean.
The Austrian Magna Steyer is an experienced car manufacturer. It's not the build quality of the factory.
In the case of Fisker, the car was launched six months too early, because the software was not yet finished. This is now being worked on with updates according to a tight schedule.

If Fiskar has a good design, it could be a good deal for both. Nissan brings production capability that Fiskar probably can't achieve or source elsewhere. And Nissan can probably no longer afford a major breakthrough design effort. Their respective strengths fill in their respective weaknesses nicely... assuming that the Fiskar design is in fact good, and producible profitably by an experienced manufacturer. All big ifs, but what are the alternatives for each? There may not be better options for either. And it could perhaps even work.

    • @Hybridog

I agree. Having Magna Steyr build the cars in Austria is very expensive. Nissan has excess capacity. Manufacturing of the Ocean and other Fiskars could be moved completely to Japan and produced in quantity and still probably be cheaper than building in Austria. Plus Nissan will surely be allowed to make their own iteration of the Ocean (and others) which would be an easy way fo them to get more EV models. BTW Magna has built a lot of good and famous cars over the years including Mercedes Geländewagen and BMW Z4. You should really look to Jaguar as the cause of the i-Pace being junk.

This move by Nissan does make sense. I heard that the collaboration between Nissan and Renault over developing EV technology isn't going that smoothly. The French can be difficult to work with, you would know that Sam because of the way that the Australian contract with the French shipyard to jointly build submarines end up.
If Nissan can get Fisker's technology and designs, maybe tweak them a bit and make them in the US that could work out well.

At a meeting shortly after the contract was signed, the French wanted to redesign the submarine, they were patronising towards the Australians, they wouldn't help the Australians set up manufacturing facilities in Australia as was agreed in the contract and the costs were rising. Things started to go wrong from the start.
The French were warned that things were going wrong.

We can assume that Nissan is not going to write a check to Fisker, but rather provide them credit to buy the trucks. I doubt this will provide any cash or time to Fisker. In the inevitable bankruptcy, Nissan will already have a few steps on others for the assets ot the truck design and it's platform. Since Nissan itself, as you said is very stretched at the moment, and could be described as "Cash Poor".
Let me contribute another fun expression, "Two drunk sailors, walking". Cheers, Really appreciate your videos. Well done.

Well, Marcus was actually on the fence about the Fisker he tested. And he gave many reasons why. The vehicle, its design, its specs are actually good. They're just competing here in the US with Tesla who has the Model Y selling for a little cheaper and who can drop the price on the Model and still make a decent profit. Fisker doesn't have that kind of wiggle room. So you have in Fisker a really compelling vehicle but Tesla has a stronghold on the EV market share at the moment.
As far as Magna, again...The Jaguar fires, like the Bolt fires have more to do with battery and battery provider than the company simply putting them together. But like GM, it's going to be Jaguar getting all the negative press and having to take responsibility for their total product...battery pack and all.
As far as the deal goes, I suspect Fisker owns the design of the truck and Nissan will be partnering with them for the design by buying/bailing out Fisker with a sizable stake in the company. Nissan will build and manufacture the truck. The Ocean will most likely continue to be made by Magna.

iPace may not be the best electric car, but it was very early on the market. Except for the Tesla Model S & X.
Audi etron got to market one year later.
The battery problem is probably mostly related to the battery manufacturer.

Second, the design was too much of a separation from the jaguar heritage.

Also, this then did not prepare them for the inevitable decline in electric powered car sales that has happened worldwide due to an almost complete lack of infrastructure to support them.

@@markplott4820 Nissan's current EVs don't sell well. The Leaf did early on, but its poor range (even the longest range version) and poor battery life (largely due to its lack of active thermal management) have caused it to fade away. Plus it only has Chademo fast charging, which effectively means it has no fast charging in the US.
The Ariya isn't a terrible car, but it's too expensive for what you get; it's just not a compelling option compared to models from Tesla and others. The base version is a non-starter in the US; not enough range. At least it has reasonably fast CCS charging and active thermal management for the battery.
On the other hand, the Fisker Ocean is a nice car that Fisker doesn't have the ability to build in large volume. Fisker is also working on a small electric pickup built on the same platform. Nissan could provide the necessary manufacturing if they can line up a battery supplier, and offer EVs that would attract more customers than their current models.

Nissan did say it had no plans for a electric Nivara, this could be a way to get one up and running before they are completely overrun. So since I am looking to get EVs made in Australia, an EV ute is basically the only type of vechical that has enough domestic demand to be worth making in Australia. In general Chinese automakers are not big ute manufacturers due to the rules around commercial vechicals in cities in China. The Australian government isn't going to give money to a Chinese company to manufacture here anyway. So Ford now manufactures in Thailand (and Great wall). Geely Radar will probably be made in Malaysia. No particular reason for the Korean manufacturers (Kia, Hydundai and Sanggyong) to move to Australia but with enough government money perhaps they could be. In the past Australia has worked with Japanese automakers but their reluctance to do anything EV related means we can't set up EV manufacturing in Australia. If Nissan does make EV utes then that is an in to ressurecting the Australian auto industry. The only other option is Rivian which has its own financial issues so I don't expect expansion outside the USA just yet. I do know they make excellent mining trucks though.

What stupid conclusions in this video. So the fact that Magna Steyr in Austria is building the Ocean makes it inferior? And the fact that Magna builds Jaguar E-pace makes Magna a bad company…? I would state that Magna Steyr and Valmet are excellent car production companies with excellent quality of their operations. However crappy English car construction is nothing new and the actual reason why the English car industry is either bankrupt and out or in foreign hands of which the Germans’ seem to be the most beneficial choice. Indian hands seems to be less of an advantage which is why the entire Jaguar brand including E-pace is crap down the toilet. No blame on Magna.
In the case of Nissan+Fisker it might be the most progressive scenario for both companies. Nissan has the production capacity, the logistics, supply and dealer network. They lack proper EVs since Leaf is garbage. Fisker has the EV models and the exciting design.

News broke friday that Nissan and Honda are working together to build EVs. Henrik Fisker probably never talked to Nissan or it was all a lie

This is simply wrong. Magna is not designing cars for jaguar, they build what they are ordered to build according the the build plan and parts provided.

So far I think people are way too optimistic on the EV adoption and it will slow down for a few years. This is not because of the EV’s themselves but because the electricity prices in for example Europe are too high to give them an advantage over a ICE or hybrid plus the countries electrical networks are able to handle all those EV’s that need to be charged.
This will need to be solved first and will take a few years and that could be just the time some of the legacy car makers need to switch over.
Also EV makers are spending millions to find the right battery technology and/or having to change their batteries and those second hand cars won’t sell if the new batteries improve so fast.
So maybe it is not even a bad tactic to wait and see what the winning battery chemistry will be in the end and make EV's only using the "best" battery chemistry.

EV adoption is not slowing down. It is accelerating. Here in the UK the great majority of new car adverts are for EVs.

@@rogerphelps9939 I think it will slow down. I guess the UK did a better job on their grid then, because in the Netherlands they are already slowing down on building new houses and companies because the grid is "full" and this also goes for the EV charging stations around the parking places on the street. It's not because people don't want to switch to EV's but when you don't have an easy way to charge them people will wait and not buy an EV yet.
