    There's something very complete about using a rotary tool to sharpen tools that we use with our other rotary tools.

      That’s the one from Lee Valley. Look it up as Veritas Bevel Gauge.

    Discoloured steel shows youve lost the temper at the end, and have a lot more grinding to go!

      No.
      Almost every turning tool made by reputable companies will be made of HSS.
      HSS doesn't look hardness until it reaches glowing red.

      At the cost of some of these tools, I don't believe I'd roll the dice with that advice. Keep some water close by and keep the steel cool to avoid ruining your day and your wallet

      @@krislink1761 information is out there, look up the temper/hardness charts.
      High heat tempering increases the hardness.
      You think a couple hundred degrees is going go have any effect?

      @@autumn5592 if you think that the color change in tool steel when sharpening on a bench grinder doesn’t affect the hardness 🤦‍♂️ absolutely it does

    i'd get a grinder that does the opposite way .Just to be sure that nothing binds up .

      Actually I don't use that one anymore. It was pretty limited for woodturning needs. I make a much better one. You can find it at www.wtwtim.com

    Gee I just used to freehand mine, and it still cut Rough Well … preferred the bevel Chisel though … nice planing cuts and rolling cuts … ovoid section shaft was really nice too …

    think like this how cnc rigs work UR the computer and how stable you can keep a piece the better kuz the less you ne to put ur focus into the more effective ur work and quality is; why do u think those "helping hands" are so useful in shouldering it less i need to hold with my fingers so i can work on the precise spot i need

    ahhh every time I see nails being used or shaved to test sharpness it reminds me of the video of a guy who makes razor sharp ceramic knifes and tests the sharpness on his nails cutting through them. lol

    What grit is that wheel and where do you get it? I just got a lathe and chisels.

      Sorry I thought I replied to you but I must have not. That was a 180 grit wheel. Woodcraft carries them and a reasonably priced grinder.

    So you hit the inside of the curve with sandpaper or a file too?

      Not usually. The little burr that is left comes off when you start turning and touch the wood.

    My only problem I have with this:
    You blued it.
    That affects your temper!
    You need to cool your tool to keep this from happining.

    If the sharpening angle is 44.5 degrees, will it not work?

      It will work but it removes more steel to create the new angle on the tool.

    This woodworking stuff needs a different name. When machinist are trying to watch videos, the last thing we want to see is a piece of wood in a shitty lathe or some homemade router mill contraption.
