We in South India got introduced to this Schubert symphony thru composer Ilayaraja who used this piece in a stage show in 2011 to demonstrate what a symphony is and how he composed a Tamil film song in 1979 ..in a folk genre inspired by this piece ..

He says that in lay man terms it is .. two different melodies playing simultaneously. ..and demonstrated with one section playing a melody seperately and the other one playing another ...then asking both of them to play simultaneously. .. he says that this Schubert piece impressed him so much.. that he composed a folk melancholy fir a flim ...from this inspiration... He also demonstrates it by humming his folk composition as the symphony ends . . Where u see the continuity in the spirit ..though they are different compositions .... Another genius ...Ilayaraja

It's like if an invisible force moves him, he is possessed by this force. Between 1:23 and 1:30 it's impressive: a marionette moved by the force of music.
Furtwängler was a German conductor who continued to perform during the war until just before the end of the war. There were times when the Nazi history was in a prominent place at the performance venue. However, the relationship with Nazi executives was not good. He tried to welcome the Jews to the Berlin Philharmoniker if he was musically good. There was often conflict with the authorities. He went into exile in Switzerland shortly before the end of the war. I saw a valuable video. Thank you.
I didnt know about the upstart Toscanini calling him a Nazi, which he wasnt by the way. Obviously Toscanini was consumed with jealously; in that he was considered second rate when compared to Furtwangler. What's ironic is Italy and Germany were the axis powers during WW2. What did the Italian think he was doing criticizing his German allies.
To clear up the date of this film clip: 1951. 1954 is erroneously given in the documentary "Great Conductors of the Past." That date is wrong. Furtwangler was filmed in 1951 for the film "Botschafter der Musik." The film was released in 1952; several authoritative sources, including the BFI, make this clear. If nothing else, the 1952 release date makes the later date impossible.
This rehearsal was in the 1951 film Botschafter der Musik, so clearly 1954 is wrong. The actual performance could, however, be earlier than 1951. The rehearsal must be associated with a performance and, searching through Trémine's concert listings, the only possible postwar performance I can find is 24-26 October 1948. There is a full performance from 24 October available on the Audite set of RIAS recordings.

I had to track down copyright holders, locate film archives with the footage, dates when that footage was created - you get the idea. In the case of this footage, the archives in Berlin said the film this footage comes from, "Botschafter der Musik," was made in 1951 and released in 1952. The film "Ambassador of Music" is mentioned everywhere, but I haven't been able to find out where it exists. The Berlin Philharmonic is said to have given access to all of the archive material, but unfortunately there is only one film in the area of the Digital Concert Hall (which belongs to the Berliners), but not the one mentioned. It’s different from enjoying Schubert’s B minor symphony. The piece expresses deep sadness of life, but it’s beautiful. No smile but maybe happy to be here.

Furtwangler was brilliant but a huge narcissist, perhaps larger than most conductors. His choice to stay in Germany is condemnable.

At 1:00, the guy right behind and seen between the first two front violinists looks like Schubert or Mahler.
He has a relaxed physical disposition, his movement is mostly in the arms, little body movement.
