fun fact about the NVA. following the japanese surrender in 1945, a number of japanese soldiers and officers in indochina defected to the viet minh to help them fight the french. most famous of them ishii takuo who was by the time of the vietnam war considered "chief advisor" to the communist guerillas in the south.

People forget that the Americans weren't fighting conscripted farmers but battle-hardened veterans. The Americans required the assistance of artillery and air support in almost every battle but considering their opposition and the fact most of them were draftees I'd say that's reasonable.

1200 MEN STRONG BATTALION CHARGE ON FORTIFIED BASE!- yes with no mortar and HMG support i think the americans lost to Vietnam just because they got tired of killing Charlies or they were afraid that they would run out of bullets

@@DiplexHeated The NVA would attack a fortified position when it was good and ready to accept the casualties. First they'd recon the hell out of the position, then build a mockup of the target, including positions for the heavy/support/automatic weapons and command and control bunkers, and 'practice practice practice' until they can do things by rote. When the time was right (unless there was a political 'urgency' for the attack), the North Viets' supporting arms would carry out a 'whirlwind' barrage the base, and try to both knock out the support weaponry and breach the fortifications; then they'd launch an attack, throwing bodies at the target. If they knocked out those Mgs and other heavy weapons, they'd make decent headway. BUT if they screw up (or they missed the fortifications/positions) the troops will just rush into a meat grinder, because that's what their training did==until word comes to 'bug out'.
It happened on more than one occasion that a US rifle company dug in around a firebase and supported by artillery and tac air was able to repel and decimate even a regiment sized attack.
