My biggest gripe was getting rid of Rebecca Ferguson and replacing her with Hayley Atwell. Then Ethan having flirting moments, like bro at least grief.
Remember Tom and Hayley were dating during this so I feel like dude found a new attraction and replaced the older one which sucks cause Illsa was the best.
Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa was my favorite character from the newer installments! I had so many issues with the way they dealt with her character and eventual death. It really dampered my mood for the rest of the movie.
I don't think she actually died. She was out of the scene too soon and Benjie was there to bring her possibly to safety. Hunt probably thought it was easier to make Grace give up the key if she feels guilty about Rebecca's alleged death and easier to recruit her to the IMF.
In case this helps anyone, people on the MI reddit are convinced that Ilsa’s death was faked to trick the Entity for reasons such as Paris surviving from a stab with the same knife that “killed” Ilsa, Luther & Benji having no reaction of grief compared to the Secretary’s death in Fallout, the fact that Ilsa “dying” motivates Grace to become used by Kittridge at the end which Ethan was very intent on, the fact that the bridge Ilsa dies on is literally a minute away from a hospital etc. McQuarrie is an incredibly smart writer and Ilsa might just be the ace up his sleeve for making MI:8 the second of two parts rather than 2 different movies.
I love that the villain is an AI that can calculate the odds of everything so of course its biggest enemy is a team that specializes in doing the impossible.
Can’t believe they killed her off. Absolutely loved her in each of the previous movies. Also the story plot was a bit choppy. They could’ve done a better job explaining the threat and bringing the story together
Nicely executed film with good pacing. The one part that was weak was the excuse they gave for Grace having to go alone on the train. Like, "Whoops, the mask-making machine suddenly broke in a crucial moment. Looks like Grace will have to go alone. At least now it will give an excuse for Ethan to perform a miraculous motorcycle cliff jump." Lol
Wow, you took it back. I think Grace Randolph has too much Harley Quinn on the mind though. Why the comparison the powder makeup? The sidekick to a male villain?(rhetorical question)
Aunt May was totally fridged, but hardly anyone mentions it in their praise of _No Way Home._ And for what? Here, the A.I. set up Ilsa and Grace for one to be killed to make Ethan so angry he will either get himself killed or kill Gabriel, the only guy that supposedly could tell him what he wants to know. Then Gabriel says Paris will betray him, but botches killing her so she does betray him! Crazy!
Rebecca better not be dead for real. Luther's comment about needing to out think the AI and Ethan's line at the beginning about her needing to stay dead give me hope. There's hints towards a faked death throughout.
I hope so because I literally covered my mouth in awe at how they did her. I loved Ilsa and she was Ethan’s rock - in a way. They did her so dirty. And Hailey in my opinion is too young for Ethan.
while i would loved that she is still alive... but bringing her from the dead is even worse as it will suddenly "cheapen" all deaths in the movie as you could expect their deaths to not "stick" in the end....
I honestly don’t think Ilsa is dead. It would be a smart plan to trick the AI into thinking one of them is dead. Luther and Benji knew the AI had access to their computers long before the scene where they smashed them up.
Ilsa's death really hurt my opinion of the movie. They spent the 2 previous movies building her and Ethan's relationship, tied off the thread with Julia in a mature way, clearing the way for Ethan and Ilsa to be together. Then they just undo all of that in 5 minutes in this movie and have Ethan move on by end. It's a shame because I like the character of Grace, but she'll always have a bitter aftertaste because of how they did Ilsa dirty to have her take the spotlight.
They did seem to be a bit missing as we go from Ethan and Ilsa looking like they were going to get together and Ilsa join the team to her being solo on the run again. Maybe something got cut so we could jump into the story quicker.
It was so clear, the second that Ilsa stepped onto that bridge she was dead. It was "Han Solo getting killed by Kylo Ren" levels of obvious. It definitely ticked me off that they couldn't make room for two leading women. But the best part of the movie was that it kept you guessing throughout.
I think it's a bummer that they got rid of Ilsa at the expense of keeping Grace alive. Technically the A.I. did play a role in keeping Ethan apart from Grace and Gabriel when they started fighting, but I wish they would've played that angle a bit differently so the team would willingly play right into Gabriel's prediction due to their natural instincts.
@@frankkay625 - I'd like to think that. But usually when the MI movies try to trick the audience, the payoff is right there in the same movie. It would feel uncharacteristic of the franchise to have her come back much later.
When Benji while unlocking the bomb said that the most important thing to him were he's friends was really one of the best moments of the franchise. SO EMOCIONAL
When Ilsa died i was more angry than ive ever been in a film. I would have been totally fine for her to die at the beginning, but to bring her back only to kill her?! So cheap. Ilsa has EVERYTHING they want Hayley Atwell's character to have: intelligence, martial arts, weapons skills, espionage, tactics, why have her replaced? Just let her leave and come back for a final installment, a cameo in the final moments? I HATED the film because it. From a 10 out of 10 to a 5
I will say that this is a good move because it takes the stakes up considerably. And I really like Rebecca Ferguson BUT I saw something similar on a TV show a while back, I can't say what it is but when it was done it shocked everyone.
Maybe Rebecca is not dead. Maybe Ethan needed a team member that the AI thought was off the board in his back pocket and she will pop up again in the last film. Cause I can't see her being gone for good.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Surely they would show an actual heartfelt death scene if she actually died. It seemed so weird that Ethan didn’t even grieve and he immediately recruited Grace
@@Siansonea That's an interesting angle. For that could possibly tie in with Luther's abrupt departure from Ethan and the team by basically saying, "I have to go totally off the grid now."
@@visual1221 oh yes, Luther even says that he is going to examine one of their infected laptops to try to understand The Entity's code that is on it. If the Entity was smart, it would just institute a burn protocol if the local processing unit ever finds itself powered down for an extended period of time without connection to a network, but maybe the AI isn't as smart as it thinks it is, or underestimates Luther.
i really liked the acknowledgement of Angela Bassett's character from Fallout. Bassett was supposed to return here but couldn't because of Covid so they had a frame picture of her on the wall of the new CIA director's office. I hope she can still come back for Pt. 2 tho
Grace the Entity is not in the sunken submarine... the Entity is everywhere. The source code in the submarine is a copy of the ORIGINAL source code and the only thing that can be used against the Entity to destroy or control it. Because it is cut off from any kind of connection the entity is unable to access and destroy the old code which is why it is a threat. The Entity does not originate from a single location as it exists everywhere on the internet. There is no "finding" the entity. The only way to destroy it is by manipulating some of the original source code and unleashing it on the internet like a virus killing virus.
Rebecca Ferguson enhanced the franchise immediately and if dead terrible writing. Leave her dead at start then. Absurd. Not the same character at all. Fridged her.
I can’t believe they fridged Rebecca Ferguson’s character!! Why can’t we have Hayley Atwell and Rebecca Ferguson both be leading ladies??? I definitely checked out of the move when she died. It took me a while to get back into the film
You're totally right about Ethan moving on too quickly from Elsa to Grace. His girlfriend dies and then literally the next day he's on to another woman! Reminds me of mission impossible 2 we're at the end he is dating Thandie Newtons character and then by the beginning of the next movie he's engaged to someone else (with absolutely no explanation as to what happened)😂
Like the Bond girls in the older films the audience just presumes it came to a natural end and the hero moved on. It helped that there was a long gap between 2+3 [6 years] and 3 felt like a bit of a re-launch given 2's mixed reception.
@@jamesatkinsonja The Bond girls, and even a load of male allies, were usually guest stars whereas Ilsa Faust has been in multiple movies and considered part of the team. I'm surprised they didn't have Rebecca Ferguson and Hayley Atwell interact with each other.
The Fridging of Isla has honestly almost turned me off from seeing the next one. She was my favorite female character they've had and that's saying something when you got people like Thandiwe Newton, Paula Patton, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and Michelle Monaghan in the list. I thought we were done with the self sacrificing bs, guess not. It wasn't even done delicately, you'd think I would cry during that scene, instead I saw it coming. In fact, when they made it seem like she had died in the desert, I was already thinking of checking out for a second because I knew that was some foreshadowing. Rebecca Ferguson's fate in Dune Part 2 will be interesting to see depicted by the way. Sadly outside of these two roles I don't think she's truly broken out as a star. I would kill to see her as a leading lady more and more, she deserves it. Such a good physical actress (she does subtle facial reactions and movements really well, sometimes you barely even notice on first watch but she's a lot more talented than they even use her for).
They should've just bought back Thandiwe's character and have her take the place of Grace. Didn't they have the same master thief skillset? Plus she seemed like she was setup as Hunt's muse for future films by the end of MI:2 , but for some reason that never manifested.
@@3boodae749 Thandiwe initially stated that she wasn't returning in MI3 due to wanting to 'spent time with her family' but revealed in 2020 it was actually because she didn't enjoy working with Cruise on MI2 and didn't want to return so I can't see her ever reappearing.
The number one film in the world at the time of Hollywood shutting down and going on strike is one where Tom Cruise has to stop a.i. It somehow got even more timely than it already was
I think this is my first review where I completely agree with Grace.Even though Haytell Atwell was amazing in this film, I didn't enjoy Rebecca Ferguson getting fridge. She was a great character and should/could have continued on. Both the characters could have existed together.
Benji turning on auto-drive. He had a concerned, lingering stare at the wheel as he jumped into the passenger seat. Explains why he quickly put his seatbelt on after handing over control to the car. Nice detail 👌🏽 👍🏽 😅
As soon as Ilsa said she’d never been to Venice I knew they were killing her off. It’s those kinds of lines where characters are so obviously not going to be able to enjoy this new area they’re in because they’re moments away from being killed. Also I don’t understand why Ethan cared that much about Grace compared to Ilsa. Like if he had to make the choice between who lives, why’d he have such a hard time with basically a strangwr
Fallout established Ethan will try to save everyone if he can [such as the French Police woman]. He tells Ilsa to 'stay dead' and to later run to save her life but both times she ignores him and tries to help. It's implied he would have got to the bridge in time to save both Ilsa+ Grace if Paris hadn't slowed him down or the Entity hadn't interfered with Benji's help.
I loved this movie and Ilsa was my favorite character. I’m pretty devastated they killed her off. I’m at least glad they gave her a badass fight sequence on the bridge and that she “chose” to sacrifice herself.
Is there a teeny-tiny possibility that Ilsa's death was faked again??? I really hope it is, cus she is a great character and she had great chemistry with Ethan Hunt.
Didn’t need to kill her off or have her in this one clearly her character was doing her own thing at the beginning of the movie have her come back for part two not part one if they what to have grace a new character in this one
People criticize Vanessa Kirby, but she really knocked out of the park this performance. Her playing both personalities in the same character (and I noticed the brown eyed contacts) was great, and she has the perfect smirk and look for spy films. I really hate how they just un-necessarily killed off Ilsa and then had no effects from that. Ethan Hunt had known Ilsa for years and had met Grace (Hayley Atwell) earlier that day, and yet he just lets her die with no emotion effect at all? I also thought the five minutes showing Tom Cruise skydiving near the end was just to show it was really him. Seemed unnecessarily long.
Five minutes? It was very short because it was a cliff he jumped off. Also she didn't die for no reason. The conversation with Luther showed his desire to kill Gabriel in revenge, leading him to have to hold back during the later fight. We see him conflicted with getting revenge or doing what's for the greater good.
Everybody's perception in seeing a movie can be different.I might not agree with you on the first viewing but i might on the fourth viewing.I never really liked llsa but i still had a strong emotional response to her death. If the death of a character gets you emotional it isn't in vain. For example when Harrison Ford died in his last Star wars movie i didn't feel anything.I just thought it was stupid.I never thought that Ethan had started a romance with Grace or that he was replacing llsa with Grace in his heart.I never thought that Ethan had no emotions about llsa's death.Wasn't the knife at the villain's throat at the end a sign that he cared?
@@flaysheik8120 If they had to kill Ilsa off at least this way it did impact the direction of the Ethan/Gabriel conflict as well as showing 'anyone can die' and showing Gabriel is a significant threat.
Loved Vanessa Kirby's performance. Something about her facial expressions and that British accent. One issue I had with the film was the contrived way they had Grace get on the train. Like, they've got the best high-tech equipment in the world, but their mask-making tech fails again. I mean, they had issues with that tech in Ghost Protocol. Surely by now, because they want to be several step ahead of their adversaries, they didn't think to have a backup mask-making machine? So it was like, "Oh, no. The machine broke. Well, no mask for Ethan. What do we do?!? Guess Grace is going alone. At least Ethan will have a cool cliff jump stunt in order to land on the train." Lol
The motorcycle jump was filmed continuously to show that Cruise did the jump stunt himself, and didn't just cut away to the back of a stuntman. Real stunts were how things were done in the 1980s and '90s, with Jackie Chan being the epitome of do-it-yourself going into the early 2000s. I laughed when they said people didn't believe that someone really jumped out of a plane on an inflatable raft in _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom._
About Gabriel and the A.I. 1. I find it hard to believe, in universe, that the technology exists for the A.I. to create a fully functioning robot terminator to hunt down Ethan and his team. 2. The entity chose Gabriel because of his relationship to Ethan Hunt. Gabriel is probably one of the only agents alive to have bested Ethan in some shape or form, and has no morals and seemingly has knowledge of the entity’s plan after Gabriel gets the key. 3. The fact that Gabriel has no remorse, morals or reasons (yet) for taking down or controlling the A.I., he is essentially a human that’s being used like a robot.
Makes you wonder about Gabriel's feelings about being used. Clearly the A.I. would destroy a sub for its own purpose; so was he told he might not make it off the train alive if Ethan Hunt wanted revenge?
Yeah a robot just might be too unconvincing with how grounded MI is. That being said, it would still be cool if it was revealed that Gabriel did die a long time ago, and it's a robot wearing a mask.
Agreed about the way they just disposed of Ilsa. And the cavalier way everyone just moved on afterwards kind of detracted from the rest of the movie for me. It made it worse that Ilsa's death felt pointless. When important franchise people die, I think people are okay with it if it feels badass, or "productive." Here, she couldn't even take out one guy. (The fact that he's so good at fighting kind of makes his henchwoman feel redundant on a story level.) Others are downplaying the "replacing" of Ilsa with Grace, saying that the fact that Atwell's character was introduced before Ilsa died somehow negates this. The point is, the introduction/death happened in the same movie, so the "trade-off" was pretty transparent. It felt very cynical. "Well, since Ilsa's only function now is to be a flirtatious ally with Ethan, and we want a new romantic option for Ethan, we have to kill Ilsa off. No other options, really." (It was also pretty bizarre that the bad guy was threatening some Sophie's choice between Ilsa and Grace. Suddenly, Ethan valued them equally, even though Grace was a nobody to him at that point. That's something that could've been easily fixed through a change in dialogue.)
Completely agree. If Ilsa was going to go out she should have gone out in a manner that befitted the character. Here she lost a knife fight. Really? That took me out of it. They only reason I didn't leave is because I thought she might turn up again before the end of the movie.
@@CelineNoyce - Yeah, it's especially weird and disappointing coming from McQuarrie. He introduced Ilsa in the first place and wrote her so well in MI5/6. She was basically an equal to Ethan in terms of skills.
Regarding the last point, he does seem to priorities Ilsa as he tells her to run to save herself but she doesn't listen and fights to protect Grace. But Ethan is someone who will try to save everyone [such as the French policewoman in Fallout] so it makes sense his enemies use that fact against him with threatening Grace too.
I LOVED this movie. The three best sequences for me were the "yellow car" chase (hilarious and action-packed), the bridge/Ethan alley sequence, and the whole Orient Express sequence. Loved all the newcomers (Atwell, Morales and Klementieff). Can't wait till next year!
you do realize Ilsa had a choice. she was free. at any moment she could have listened to Ethan and stayed dead. stayed away from the Mission. the A.I kept bringing her back, and even lured her in to save Grace on the bridge. i think you're soo caught up in the team, actors, own personal opinion, that you're overlooking the actual story of it all. even Gabriel on the bridge said upon seeing Ilsa, "I was hoping it'd be you." showing that the A.I had already made it's choice on who it'd want to kill. we're all soo caught up in our own wants/desires/thoughts. that as a plot point, i found that it actually worked. got me to cry.
I had a feeling ilsa was dying but honestly it is truly the only MAJOR issue with the movie. I was the only woman in my theater when I watched and as I saw this bs take place I thought to myself “no wonder I’m the only woman here 💀”. I loved this movie so much but god damn did they screw up Ilsa. I especially think it kinda makes all the development they had in the last movie and with her meeting his ex wife… just seems kinda empty and pointless now? That emotional depth that was in 6 was missing here in 7.
They’ve done Rebecca dirty. Personally, I don’t think Gabriel is a better fighter than Ilsa. Still mad they get rid of her. The movie is still entertaining and enjoyable and best movie of the year so far.
The villain was the weakest point from this movie. The whole cat vs mouse chase with Grace was frustrating as well because she was making everyone's job difficult by becoming the damsel in distress role. Shame Rebecca Ferguson's character died because that's why I loved her character so much. She was able to handle her own
8:37 You read way too much into Tom Cruise caressing Haley Atwell's cheek. 1. Tom Cruise before he jumps is thinking of ALL the ladies in movie he's working with before he attempts to meet Haley Atwell on train. They show him thinking about them so no he's not in a flirting mood when he thinks about them. 2. Tom Cruise was even honest before they began saying that he can't promise her anything but that her life will always be more important than his own. 3. He's not trying to touch her cheek to to flirt he was making sure she's okay and when she started to cry he was focusing on her at that time.
I don't think Rebecca Ferguson is dead. There was a line in the movie about her having a problem with getting off the grid and staying dead. I kind of think she's gonna show back up as a part of a Ethan Hunk 4D chess move..... or when the mission is complete.
Man the movie was awesome but I definitely kept saying after it was over I can’t believe they Killed Ilsa(Rebecca Ferguson) like she was the coolest character the last two movies and she died at the hands of a zealot. But at least Grace(Haley Atwell) is just as cool a character. But I swear if they end up killing her off or replacing her then idk how much more I can take.
Venice really does look like that at night, it’s like a totally different place at night. During the day it’s packed, but at nighttime it’s a place where you can walk around and see maybe a few people, it’s weird. But it’s also SUPER BEAUTIFUL during the day, but somewhat creepy at night.
This was a very entertaining movie.......the orient express is very much still a working train. You can still book passage in Europe for a few nights. The interior is an exact replica, production design was spot on.
I feel like Paris was good, but Gabriel was an underwhelming villain. I think they could’ve made him more interesting by having the AI talking to him constantly through some sort of ear device and we wouldn’t be able to hear it. Like he would be constantly paranoid and changing his plans to accommodate for what the AI says is the best option.
Maybe he was like that because he felt he had little free will. He had to do what he did before and on the train, perhaps with the possibility that Ethan would kill him out of revenge. And though he had an out if he didn't die, maybe he had a fatalist view of things.
@@ompatel5570 no, they would be destroying their best chance of destroying The Entity if they blew up the sub. That was what The Entity was trying to do originally, but didn't succeed in completely destroying the sub. That's why Ethan and his team needed the key-to unlock the apparatus that encases that original code. It is that code that they actually need, so Luther can use it to destroy the more advanced version that became The Entity. All of this is a setup for Luther to actually save the day.
The movie was a little sloppy plot wise and I really didn't like how they handled Ilsa (the original female Ethan Hunt). It would have been better if they had not brought her character back after the desert scene and she had continued to "stay dead." As for Hunt's reaction to her death: he spent more time grieving an agent he trained (Keri Russell's character in MI:III) than he did one of his great loves. Hunt should come with a warning: If you're my current main squeeze and a new brunette arrives on the scene, you better have your affairs in order. I'm going to have to rewatch the first MI because I'm pretty sure they retconned Hunt's background and added in The Gray Man/Suicide Squad choice. I think some of Harley Quinn vibes may be because it looks like they were originally going to do a Venetian masked ball (which would explain her faux mask makeup), but abandoned that and either forgot to change her costume or just thought it looked cool and kept it anyway.
@@625realone I want to believe! I guess they've given themselves a little wiggle room by noting that she always gets out of trouble, but faking her death twice in one movie? As for Paris, I think someone says "she's got a pulse" right before (?) Grace talks to Kittridge about joining the IMF.
If she had 'stayed dead' they could have brought her back in a following film [like Julia] but until Rebecca talks about it we'll never known [maybe she wanted to have a permanent exit and move on?].
Grace, the Orient Express is a real train. It goes on many journeys all over Europe. Very expensive but one of those bucket list things many people dream of travelling on 🚂
Its weird to me because she fits so well with the team and Ethan to get rid of her is odd so i have to believe she will come back and her and Ethan end the series together. Also no more dark endings for movies like all of his team dies and he is the last survivor or Ethan dies just have her come back the team lives and they end up together ppl will be happy.
I know that Elsa died in the movie and he's probably not returning for part two, but I can see a universe where they faked her death to fool the AI. It is probably not going to happen because Tom is famous for changing the female leads, but I have a small glimmer of hope
The sub actually has the original source code of the AI. The AI in the movie is the evolved version after they tried to control it. They can only stop the evolved one with the original source code which is only found on the sub cut off from everything else.
The villain turned out to be Skynet, I have to omit when Grace mentioned the villain. I was very intrigued, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was ai.
Maybe it was Rebecca Ferguson's choice to leave so they had to find a way to do it so nobody was asking "where is she?" and then wondering if she will be there for Part 2. I mean she would have been filming Dune and Silo at the same time.
I wouldn't be surprised given her other commitments [she been promoting Dune and Silo more on Instagram than Mission]. While I didn't want to see the character go, at least giving her an exit scene is better than just having her disappear between films.
@@jamesatkinsonja I don't know. Faking her death and then her face shows up in the front seat in Rome, for traffic cameras to find? Better if she just disappeared and we hope she comes back for part 2.
Saw the movie late last night and absolutely loved it. Really like the use of the real sets and locations. That train scene though was just utter crazy. The female characters were great.
Still mad about them killing off Rebecca Ferguson. She barely had any dialogue! Overall the movie was pretty solid. I did notice Alanna’s eye colour change when Grace was disguised as her and asked if my parents noticed at the end of the movie. (They did not)🤣
Maybe Ethan's central flaw is his choosing to grin, run, and trying to fly across the world and very high and very low in space toward and feeding on his gifts and away from building the strength to be vulnerable enough to be intimate enough to settle, making him an homme fatale, and - so far from MI 1 till MI 7a - a tragic hero, not too unlike Tom in life.
I only got into the Mission Impossible movies since the introduction of Ilsa Faust’s character. Learning about her fate has ruined my interest in this franchise. If she’s revived later I will then checkout this movie.
If IMF recruits thieves and criminals and Rebecca Ferguson character was already fired from the British spies. Why didn’t they ever officially recruit her to IMF? She seems good and still has a desire to do this sort of work.
I felt like something was missing there because the ending of Fallout [for me at least] seem to imply she was going to join the IMF and get with Ethan but this film starts with her 'on the run' again and Ethan hasn't seen her for a while. Maybe there was a line to explain it which got cut to jump into the story quicker.
Great spoiler review! I completely disagree that the AI should have used robots instead of humans. 1. Using robots would have been way too sci-fi and Terminator -like. It would have taken me out of the movie. Unless the movie takes place decades in the future, robot technology isn't anywhere close to imitating how humans walk, talk and gesture. 2. The AI isn't meant to be perfect. It believes it can manipulate people into doing what they want so taking advantage of people makes more sense than having a robot army.
I agree Rebecca Ferguson seemed checked out. They underpowered Isla in this. There is no way Gabriel could beat her. Think back to Rogue Nation and all the goons she fought her way through, including the bone doctor who was ridiculous but also a legit threat. She was fridged for sure. I REALLY hope she is not dead but .. we will see.
I finally had time to see this movie. I feel it is unfair that people only focus on Barbies and Oppenheimer because this is a grade A action movie that Hoolyhood rarely makes anymore. All those dedications to this movie really deserve attention. I do appreciate people's interest in genres other than superheroes. However, I will appreciate they spend some time to honor the quality of this movie.
I hadn't seen a single trailer for the movie but because of the good reviews, I watched Rogue Nation and Fallout a few days before and I had the best time!
I am truly disappointed in everyone involved in the decision to kill off Ilsa Faust. I agree with everything Grace said about this! Rebecca Ferguson deserves better than that.
Ilsa is not dead, it was another female wearing a "lookalike" mask so that the audience is misdirected, she is in part II and will save Ethan yes, a bit like "Indiana Jones". WATCH THIS SPACE!
I cant get over Ferguson’s death she was my favourite :( i told my friend when they announced the movie that if she dies i wont get over it. And worst we saw it coming with the AI and confirmed before her final battle :(
Worst thing about the movie was getting rid of Rebecca Ferguson! I mean, does anybody know why they wrote her off? Was it intentional or was it Rebecca's choice? I NEED ANSWERS!!!
I do wonder if it was her choice as she's been very busy with Silo and Dune while she seems to be very friendly with everyone [including Hayley Atwell] at the premiers but I guess we'll have to wait for her to explain.
Fallout showed Ethan closing the chapter with his ex wife & it looked like she was handing Ethan over to Ilsa Faust. Then in Dead Reckoning, they just broomed Ilsa aside like John Conner in Terminator Dark Fate. They fell into the Bond cliche of having a different woman in every film. They had Luthor Stickwell in each MI movie, Benji in it since MI3. And it would have been nice to have Ilsa as a reoccurring female character considering she was Ethan's equal in many ways. And we're supposed to accept a pick pocket thief is now a IMF agent in the sequel? Yeah right.
I saw this today. Loved it! That train going over the Cliff. Chef’s kiss 💋I’ve been a fan of Vanessa Kirby since The Crown. Great review, thanks Grace!
I really liked the movie, the villain too, i saw none of the faults you saw Grace, he was intimidating, mysterious and seemed like he could hurt you without even being there, like the AI. Also, robots? they haven't established that kind of technology in the "real world" the movie is supposed to happen, except some gadgets like the face mask.
Ilsa Faust has been the most interesting character in MI... I would love to see her partnering with Grace in a further installment... Two women in the team, with different skills, would be awesome
Rebecca Ferguson was not fridged. She had multiple movies to develop. In this movie she got an action scene, a dramatic scene, and a quality death scene. It's a spy series. They have to face consequences. Alec Baldwin died in the last film. We also got two new female co-stars in Klemetioff and Atwell who are complex and capable with the potential for longevity. If anything Rhames and Pegg have overstayed a bit, but they really haven't set up replacements. Cruise is the only character that cannot be replaced. It's his franchise.
This movie lost a whole star for me by having us believe Ilsa is "dead". Hayley Atwell is no Rebecca Ferguson. Ive seen Ilsa take out 3 guys with her bare hands, and she gets done in by one guy when she has a sword?? I know Rebecca is really busy so maybe she asked to leave, but im hoping her death was faked. They've built her up over 2 films to be Ethan's equal, leading to an eventual romance, then they give her 10 lines and get rid of her? Its messed up. She's my favorite character in these movies, and they passed over her "death" like she was nothing. It would make sense if it was all Ethan's plan. Im hoping thats what it will be.
Agreed. Ilsa is a formidable assassin and gets taken out in less than two minutes by a villain that, imo, isn't as threatening as the Bone Doctor from Rogue Nation whom Ilsa expertly dispatched. One theory out there is that Ilsa on the bridge was someone else in an Ilsa mask.
My biggest gripe was getting rid of Rebecca Ferguson and replacing her with Hayley Atwell. Then Ethan having flirting moments, like bro at least grief.
Ethan couldn’t deny the chemistry between him and Grace. Also, most of the flirting was done before she died.
Legit made me so angry i disengaged with the film and didnt care at all!!
The flirting was before. Did you watch even watch the movie. Also, it's just banter. They never liked each other
Remember Tom and Hayley were dating during this so I feel like dude found a new attraction and replaced the older one which sucks cause Illsa was the best.
@@thomasanderson2384 are they a couple? She could do better. She should have got with Chris Evans when she had her shot.
Ilsa was one of the best female characters in recent memory. She was written very very well compared to a lot of recent characters.
After the desert she didn't have much to do except get killed.
Yes and having her take a back seat to that turkey Atwell.
Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa was my favorite character from the newer installments! I had so many issues with the way they dealt with her character and eventual death. It really dampered my mood for the rest of the movie.
She was my favorite character as well. I wasn’t happy about her fate. But I still really enjoyed the movie
literally the only thing i really liked about the movies she is in. Well Ok simon pegg too.
Same
I don't think she actually died. She was out of the scene too soon and Benjie was there to bring her possibly to safety. Hunt probably thought it was easier to make Grace give up the key if she feels guilty about Rebecca's alleged death and easier to recruit her to the IMF.
@@denniszenanywhere Bullshit
I hope this is true expect now I'm spoiled...

@@oli.ySomehow, Palatine returned.
@OziJo1 you clicked on the spoiler review bruh
I love that the villain is an AI that can calculate the odds of everything so of course its biggest enemy is a team that specializes in doing the impossible.
Can’t believe they killed her off. Absolutely loved her in each of the previous movies. Also the story plot was a bit choppy. They could’ve done a better job explaining the threat and bringing the story together
It's suspense for part 2
@@r.k.m9801 Yeah, personally I think I have to wait until I've seen part 2 before judging the plot overall.
@@visual1221 I figured it got hacked by the A.I.
@@visual1221 I mean those mask machine also broke in Ghost Protocol 😭
I like Pom's character. She is like Grace Jones in A View to a Kill, a flamboyant evil accomplice turned tragic hero with a redemption arc
Glad she was allowed to show she can do the less "mantissy" style character convincingly too.
Totally agree. She had that same crazy fire May Day had. I was cheering her on☺️ big time!
Wow, you took it back. I think Grace Randolph has too much Harley Quinn on the mind though. Why the comparison the powder makeup? The sidekick to a male villain?(rhetorical question)
Yes, the joy on Paris's face when driving over the scooters was great - just like The Joker in The Dark Knight, she's a villain who has fun.
You’re right Grace, Rebecca was totally fridged, and that’s kinda what ruined the movie for me, which is rough because I really love this franchise.
❤😊
Aunt May was totally fridged, but hardly anyone mentions it in their praise of _No Way Home._ And for what?
Here, the A.I. set up Ilsa and Grace for one to be killed to make Ethan so angry he will either get himself killed or kill Gabriel, the only guy that supposedly could tell him what he wants to know. Then Gabriel says Paris will betray him, but botches killing her so she does betray him! Crazy!
Ilsa has been my favorite character since Rogue Nation so I'm pretty bummed but will see where they take it next.
Rebecca better not be dead for real. Luther's comment about needing to out think the AI and Ethan's line at the beginning about her needing to stay dead give me hope. There's hints towards a faked death throughout.
I agree. They can't have spent 2.5 movies building their relationship to just be killed off like that. I think this was to trick AI and Gabriel
Wow, you got an interesting point. Maybe Rebecca isn't dead. That knife looks above the ❤!
I hope so because I literally covered my mouth in awe at how they did her. I loved Ilsa and she was Ethan’s rock - in a way. They did her so dirty. And Hailey in my opinion is too young for Ethan.
Here's another hint.
Grace: "I'm the reason she's dead."
Luther: "No - she's the reason you're alive. And that's the truth."
while i would loved that she is still alive... but bringing her from the dead is even worse as it will suddenly "cheapen" all deaths in the movie as you could expect their deaths to not "stick" in the end....
I think they faked her death, so that she can help to take the ai down.
Yeah good points
They did seem to be a bit missing as we go from Ethan and Ilsa looking like they were going to get together and Ilsa join the team to her being solo on the run again. Maybe something got cut so we could jump into the story quicker.
Oh stop it. It was great and gave the movie stakes
I still loved the movie but I dont belive she is dead. I think this was a something to trick the AI and Gabriel
She’s not dead.
@@frankkay625 - I'd like to think that. But usually when the MI movies try to trick the audience, the payoff is right there in the same movie. It would feel uncharacteristic of the franchise to have her come back much later.
I think they faked her death, so that she can help to take the ai down.
@@WastedPo plus they already did a fakeout death with her at the beginning of the movie so doing it again at the end would be too much.
Yeah it broke my heart when they killed off IIsa 💔 😪
From a 10 out of 10 to a 5
You know you can like more than one female character, right?
Rebecca Ferguson is slated to appear in part 2 so she's either coming back in flashbacks or she's not really dead
@@roberttrevino62800 It's possible Ethan doesn't know. It's possible only Ilsa and Luther know.
I didn't think about it, but is possible, Ilsa and Paris were both stabbed, and Paris still have a pulse so Ilsa can be faking her death, again.
i really liked the acknowledgement of Angela Bassett's character from Fallout.

💯
The US messed up the Russian A.I. so maybe it combined into a new version
Thanks for sharing. I thought that was the case, since I saw it a couple hours ago, but wasn't ready to contradict Grace.
Most likely she isn't dead. Remember they made a big point at the beginning of the film to tell rebecca to stay dead. she's not really dead.
Justice for Ilsa! So annoyed they fridged her!
Rome was just recovering from Fast X then here comes Ethan Hunt.
Directors: Let's use CGI
Tom : I am CGI ( Cruise Going Insane )
Me too. It was really bad.
Ilsas death was weird. Hated she had to go out that way. With like a whisper. Also. cary elwes shoulda had more screen time
The number one film in the world at the time of Hollywood shutting down and going on strike is one where Tom Cruise has to stop a.i.
The handcuffed scene in the small car was really funny. Nice break of tension from long action scenes.
Absolutely a Master-class in modern film making. Clearly TC is setting up something huge for Part two. Can't wait.
Yes, agree, the behavior of Ethan was out of character and out of any logic.
I loved this movie and Ilsa was my favorite character. I’m pretty devastated they killed her off. I’m at least glad they gave her a badass fight sequence on the bridge and that she “chose” to sacrifice herself.
100% agreed on Rebecca . . . it was cruel to her . . .
(The fact that he's so good at fighting kind of makes his henchwoman feel redundant on a story level.)
Others are downplaying the "replacing" of Ilsa with Grace, saying that the fact that Atwell's character was introduced before Ilsa died somehow negates this. No other options, really."
(It was also pretty bizarre that the bad guy was threatening some Sophie's choice between Ilsa and Grace.
Rebecca Ferguson is slated to return to part 2 so either it's flashbacks or she's not really dead
Maybe they had a breakup before she stole the key and went into the desert?
you do realize Ilsa had a choice. she was free. at any moment she could have listened to Ethan and stayed dead. stayed away from the Mission. the A.I kept bringing her back, and even lured her in to save Grace on the bridge. i think you're soo caught up in the team, actors, own personal opinion, that you're overlooking the actual story of it all. even Gabriel on the bridge said upon seeing Ilsa, "I was hoping it'd be you." showing that the A.I had already made it's choice on who it'd want to kill. we're all soo caught up in our own wants/desires/thoughts. that as a plot point, i found that it actually worked. got me to cry.
If she was going to go, at least it was her throwing herself into action and going out fighting.
Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa will return….mark my words.
Venice really does look like that at night, it’s like a totally different place at night. During the day it’s packed, but at nighttime it’s a place where you can walk around and see maybe a few people, it’s weird. But it’s also SUPER BEAUTIFUL during the day, but somewhat creepy at night.
Can confirm haha got stuck there after 12am one time and had to walk to catch a bus back to my hostel
I dont think Ilsa is dead.
The only way ill watch the next installment is if she isnt dead
I think she posted on her social media that she was filming for part 2. Let's hope for the best 🙏
One theory is it was someone else on that bridge wearing an Ilsa mask.
I’m trying to see how Paris was anything like Harley Quinn considering how Harley doesn’t shut up and paris doesn’t speak
Rebecca Ferguson was the female Ethan Hunt already, we seen that in Rogue Nation
❤
Maybe he was like that because he felt he had little free will. He had to do what he did before and on the train, perhaps with the possibility that Ethan would kill him out of revenge. And though he had an out if he didn't die, maybe he had a fatalist view of things.
The AI isn't located in the sub, the original source code of the AI is in the sub...and that's why The Entity sank the sub.
If they destroy the sub, do they not destroy the entity
@@ompatel5570 no, they would be destroying their best chance of destroying The Entity if they blew up the sub. That was what The Entity was trying to do originally, but didn't succeed in completely destroying the sub. That's why Ethan and his team needed the key-to unlock the apparatus that encases that original code. It is that code that they actually need, so Luther can use it to destroy the more advanced version that became The Entity. All of this is a setup for Luther to actually save the day.
@@Siansoneaspot on!
Paris is still alive? 🤔
R u sure llsa is dead? 😉
@@625realone I want to believe! I guess they've given themselves a little wiggle room by noting that she always gets out of trouble, but faking her death twice in one movie?
As for Paris, I think someone says "she's got a pulse" right before (?) Grace talks to Kittridge about joining the IMF.
@@Quantum_Penguin Yes, that true about Paris.
Yes, it’s not like it’s operation from the bottom of the ocean
❤

THE TRAIN PART WAS INSANE!
Yeah, I feel Rebecca phoned it in. Like she knew her character was going to get killed off and replaced by Grace.
I saw this movie yesterday. I loved every minute of it! Tom just can’t miss lately

I think she would've made more enemies.
Say it ain't so. I love Rebecca Ferguson in the MI movies.
Didn’t realize Gabriel was the guy who yelled “RITCHIEEEEEEE” At the end when he yelled “ETHANNN” life came full ⭕️
And worst we saw it coming with the AI and confirmed before her final battle :(
I actually wanted to cry when they killed Rebecca Ferguson 😭
❤
Grace didn't leave him to die. She gave him her hairpin to pick the lock but enough time for her to get away.
I to felt Vannessa Kirby playing Grace disguised as The White Widow was a spot on performamce.
Indeed. Phenomenal acting. Love that line and smirk to Zola when he said to her, "You changed" and she replied, "And you never will."
I really liked the movie, the villain too, i saw none of the faults you saw Grace, he was intimidating, mysterious and seemed like he could hurt you without even being there, like the AI.
Also, robots? they haven't established that kind of technology in the "real world" the movie is supposed to happen, except some gadgets like the face mask.
thanks Grace, i saw the film and your review is spot on
Drinking game: drink every time they say "The Entity"
I just saw the images for the new live action Snowhite... I think Disney is in trouble.
Ilsa Faust has been the most interesting character in MI... I would love to see her partnering with Grace in a further installment... Two women in the team, with different skills, would be awesome
I WAS SOOOOO MAD ABOUT REBECCA 😢😳 BUT I DO LOVE THE AI VILLAIN 🎉
Rebecca Ferguson was not fridged. She had multiple movies to develop. In this movie she got an action scene, a dramatic scene, and a quality death scene. It's a spy series. They have to face consequences. Alec Baldwin died in the last film.
We also got two new female co-stars in Klemetioff and Atwell who are complex and capable with the potential for longevity.
If anything Rhames and Pegg have overstayed a bit, but they really haven't set up replacements.
Cruise is the only character that cannot be replaced. It's his franchise.
This movie was one LONG nerve recking scene lol
Killing off Ilsa Faust almost lost the movie for me.
I am hoping it's a plot twist and that Ilsa Faust is still alive and comes back in the next one to save everyone somehow...
NO WAY IISA IS DEAD! ALSO, REBECCA FERGUSON IS SUPPOSE TO BE APPEAR IN MI 8 AS WELL!
