The Toyota TS040 already beat Audi and Porsche at the FIA WEC opener at Silverstone. Toyota made a 1-2 finish, shutting out Audi and Porsche from the top 2 positions.
steinarne79 Both cars locked the rears going into high speed corners. This happened three times. Could be a problem with the energy recovery braking system at the rear. But it was raining so shouldn't jump to rash conclusions :)
Dom Scarff This is really seriously bad stuff. Electronic that can just malfunction decide what end of the car goes first into a 150mph corner... brrr! Scary!
Audi and Porsche have nothing to fear. Toyota will have a recall on this car, I'm sure. Seriously, though, this will motivate the hell out of Audi. Their response will be something of interest.
Congrats to Toyota for winning the WEC LMP1 constructor's crown and to Anthony Davidson for winning the overall driver's crown. Testimony to the unmatched consistency+reliability of the TS040 over multiple race tracks
Seems like they're going with a completely opposite direction to other teams, rather than small displacement engines with massive turbos and few cylinders or even diesels for efficiency they're using a naturally aspirated 3.7l V8 petrol! Maybe they're going for tons of power to make up for extra time spent in the pits?
For a WOT track like Le Sarthe a N/A engine can have benefits regarding fuel consumption (same reason the very peaky wankel powered the 787B to its win). Guess its down to the engine spending more time at peak power (and efficiency) compared to other tracks.
True, they're the only team in LMP1-HY running a NA engine (although Audi's V6 diesel is actually the largest at 4.0 liters). I was nearly convinced that this car would be quicker in a straight line compared to Porsche's small V4, however after watching Mark Webber past one of the Toyotas with relative ease during Silverstone I'm no longer convinced of that.
Young Progressive To be fair, the Porsches were in Le Mans aero configuration, which means lower downforces (and less drag) because they are testing for le mans. Toyota was in high downforce sprint package, so they could have been faster due to the aero.
DumpValvesAndDnB But they do actually coast more than usual races at LeMans, Unless Toyota intend to go flatout more of the time, possibly forcing competitors to do the same and sacrifice some efficiency to be able to compete.
Beautiful shots. After a long winter break I almost forgot how exciting these cars actually are, and with nearly a 1000bhp on board, I think you can safely say that this is the new king of motorsport. /Drive, did you do a special on the current gen LMP cars? I would love to get some more inside information.
Sportscars could really beat F1 for the fist time since 1971 again: Perhaps FIA ruins it all with their idiotic livestream-policy though... Hope Toyota wins this year's 24h of Le Mans!
Toyota has now won twice in a row : 1-2 finish at Silverstone and 1-3 finish at Spa. Guess all those years of research into hybrid technology is finally paying off. The TS040 is looking good going into Le Mans.
One of the best sounding LMP 1 cars I have ever heard. Hell it might look like someone gimped up a TS030 with a Porsche LMP1, but the sound and the way it looks when performing might have just won my senses.
The toyota has even more vertically square front wheel housings than the Porsche. I would like to know what new info or rules can cause such a change from 2 major companies in such a short time. Hey Leo, can you do some aero investigations and share what you find on your show?
I know what you mean, I wish Peugeot was still in it and that Ferrari would stop teasing us from the sidelines. It kinda sucks that there are only 3 or 4 LMP1 teams.
Pretty sure they will dominate Porsche...but there is still Audi. I also believe both Audi and Porsche will have much better economy that's what could kill the Toyotas despite eventually being faster.
I'm an Audi fan, but yeah I definitely see what you're saying. It's a shame for all these companies to put in all this money and time only to be beaten by the same few makes every year.
Best lap times from 2013 6 Hours of Bahrain and 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix. Both races had same track layout. Race: Audi R18, 1'44.183 Mercedes F1, 1'37.020 Qualifying: Toyota TS030, 1'42.170 Mercedes F1, 1'33.185
Teemu Koivisto But you have to take into consideration that LMP1 cars have a minimum weight (set by regulations) of 900kg, while in 2014 an F1 car is about 690kg. That means that an LMP1 car is a whopping 30% heavier. Most motorsport technical experts agree that if they were set at the same weight level, they LMP1 would easily compare to an F1 car, or be even better.
***** But that does not make good comparison. That way we lose one difference between two cars. It would be same if F1 cars could increase engine displacement from 1.6l to 2.0l which is allowed to petrol LMP1 cars.
Teemu Koivisto True. So it's all down to the regulations the cars are made on. As they are set know (higher power outputs for LMP1, but much lighter F1 cars) a top LMP1 car is about 10% slower than a top F1 car during the course of one lap. But considering that the Marussia F1 car is about 5% slower than the front runners, maybe the difference is not that big. What I was trying to say is that, with broadly similar regulations (on weight and engine (although I very much like the heterogeneity of endurance engines)), Audi/Toyota/Porsche could make an LMP1 car as competitive as a Mercedes/RBR F1 car.
Watched these dominate at silverstone last week! Although I have to say I thought the Audi was on rails at times! Super planted, and the Porsche was hitting 20mph more on the longest straight :O role on Le Mans :D
At this point, it looks like man has perfected the race automobile! No imperfections! I could now imagine what it would be like 20 even 50 years from now. The type of technology that is going to be used. Race cars will probably be cornering at 500 miles an hour, who knows.
I think the biggest question when talking about going the distance is hanging over Porsche, at least taking all those reliability problems rumours into account. And ofcourse the fact they are on their first year. In their first year even Audi had tons of problems.
Even as an Audi Fan, I think Porsche is going to win next year. They have put so much money and Effort in the Le Mans Project compared to Toyota and Audi and at the end of last years WEC Season they have been on the same Level with Audi and Toyota. At Le Mans 2015 they will be one step ahead.
Porsche has "been there/done that" with huge successes for decades and decades in the non-hybrid category. It would not surprise me to see the Porsches make a triumphant return to LeMans. It's practically their patrimony, even as it was in earlier times for Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari, Ford, and Nissan, to name a few. We shall see.
Nissan has never won LeMans. Porsche hasn't won it in 16 years and if they are going up against the highly successful Audi team it won't be easy. Toyota really should win since they were cruelly robbed by a puncture in 1999 little more than an hour from the finish. Diversity is good in motorracing.
We will see, but it helps to remember the engineers that did the 917, 936, 956 and 963 etc. were almost a completely different set of people than the people doing the 919. They are doing good save the reliability problems that will be ironed out no doubt. For me though, I'm rooting for Toyota =D
***** If you don't support the home team, you are not a very loyal fan. Of course, there's no US competitor in the Prototype class. The Corvettes are a couple of steps down. SO, go Porsche!
The sound in F1 is bad...but the racing is much better then last season I didn't even finish watching the season it was such a snooze fest even with the great sounding cars, I for 1 am glad the Vettle era is over. The current F1 cars sound like mopeds and the noses look like male genitalia but I've excused it all because the Bahrain race was spectacular and lot of the teams have stepped up their game i.e. Williams, Torro Rosso, Force India & Mercedes is especially good this year...I can only wonder what it would have been like if Schumacher was still with the team and Rosberg was the one that left. It would have been amazing
Law19157 i wouldnt say its over, red bull will come back believe me, its just matter of time. but on the other hand i'm excited if nico beats hammelton, because i was always a fan of mercedes since they came back. but i'm german, so i'd like to see nico for WM2014 ricciardo would be fun to in my opinion.
LATRONNIK No it's over...Daniel Ricciardo has demonstrated greater skill then Vettle, he can adapt to a car better then Vettle can, Vettle seems to need the car to have some sort of aid in grip for him to be good, Ricciardo doesn't need it, they both have the same car yet Daniel is coming out on top. I wouldn't be surprised if Ricciardo beats Vettle even if Newy manages to get more grip from the car. Vettle is done, there's rumors he plans on leaving Redbull good riddens, it was pretty boring watching him win all the time. And as far as Roseberg goes, he isn't as good a driver as Hamilton, They have the same car and he still hasn't managed to get passed Hamilton in the past 3 races, he's lap times are always slower. hrmmm, looks and sounds great, i really want audi off the podium, i hope its porsche that takes the win but heck with how this things sounds and all, wouldnt mind toyota winning :D
Also to the theone42:F1 is superior and ultra light and the design is for pure down force hence it's ugly ugly go cart airplane look. But it is design to drive upside down and stay glued to the grown. LMP1 fast aerodynamically but it is held back by weight and design. It is built to have a covered cockpit and this creates some mass and air resistance. Which equals seconds which is a big number I'm racing. Also lmp is more closer to production proto experimental than F1.F1 is just that bland.
Porsche 911 They are almost vertical to direct the air through the middle of the car to create downforce and to reduce the drag created by the holes over the wheels mandated by FIA. Do you really think they would do them this way if it wasn't aerodynamic? BTW, in Le Mans you'll see a completly different front end ;)
I find it fascinating how fast these thing eat up corners! And still could do better! Crazy.
The Toyota TS040 already beat Audi and Porsche at the FIA WEC opener at Silverstone. Toyota made a 1-2 finish, shutting out Audi and Porsche from the top 2 positions.
well audi did manage to crash both their cars, but despite that the TS040 still looked very competitive.
Daniel Gens I've not seen that, was that performance-crash or stupid-crash or otherbeingstupidcrash? :P

Sounds better than a 2014 F1 car
Harrison Conyers
So does a hairdryer..
Michael Adair
So do the Robins outside my window.
Well that's not difficult
Dream on mate...
Thankfully they listened and the hairdryer sound should be rectified in 2016 hopefully.
Looks fast and sounds good to. I would like to see Toyota win le mans this year something different I'm tired of seeing Audi win year after year.
we probably would see Toyota win more, if somehow cars stop to crash at them... audi really spend alot of mine to make sure they win...
I don't know about performance but this car sure SOUNDS a hell of alot better than the competition!
For a WOT track like Le Sarthe a N/A engine can have benefits regarding fuel consumption (same reason the very peaky wankel powered the 787B to its win). Guess its down to the engine spending more time at peak power (and efficiency) compared to other tracks.

Trackside, my favorite DRIVE segment tied with Driver's Eye! Glad to see you again!
Sounds awesome, especially the downshifts. Still hope the new 919 is going to win LeMans.
Beautiful shots. After a long winter break I almost forgot how exciting these cars actually are, and with nearly a 1000bhp on board, I think you can safely say that this is the new king of motorsport.
/Drive, did you do a special on the current gen LMP cars? I would love to get some more inside information.
Now there is a Toyota hybrid I approve. Unlike that suppository shaped thingy they try to sell as a car.
Let's hope Toyota can give Audi and Porsche a run for their money.
Man, I love how those hybrid race cars sound. I feel as if I'm in a sci-fi movie :P
More vids like these please! I love that you guys got an interior view at the start as well
Great video. Its the most peaceful video ive seen in years.

The noise is so weird, love it :D
This car is BRILLIANT, so much more beautiful than the Audis
Wow. That is some quality footage, Drive. I'm impressed.
Thank you for not putting a crappy dub step soundtrack over this video.
I wish they would tell you the spec's on these cars
I heard that at full tilt, the engine+motor makes about 1000hp
Vivos71 What does it weigh? 750kg ?
Aaron Elliott
870kg
How about setup details? Damping and Spring Rates??
Yea i knew that was the reason, but every guy love's a good set of facts... :L

kraenk12 Yes, the naturally aspirated V8 unfortunately doesn't sound very economic
SRAMEK but they have the best hybrid power output so they can go faster with the same fuel
Awww, man... I was hoping to see more of cockpit view. A full lap would have been awesome.
Still a nice vid. Thanks.
Le Mans this year is going to be awesome...I cant wait :)
Its good to see Toyota racing again
what's up with the vertical head light? look like a bus. Another regulation problem?
That thing looks planted!
On a technical truck, which car would be faster in terms of lap times- an F1 or an LMP1 car?
lets say, RedBull's F1 vs Audi's R18
Best lap times from 2013 6 Hours of Bahrain and 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix. Both races had same track layout.
Race:
Audi R18, 1'44.183
Mercedes F1, 1'37.020

I already give it first prize for sound in LMP1. The looks, well, laws of nature and FIA rules cannot be broken.
The grip on that car is impressive. Take curves at amazing speed, no drifting.
This car's performance is amazing. It's quite a lot of fun to look at on the track.
i'm confused as to whether the sound should be cutting out
Very cool, very nice footage!
The best sounding LMP1 for the 2014 season :D
Watched these dominate at silverstone last week! Although I have to say I thought the Audi was on rails at times! Super planted, and the Porsche was hitting 20mph more on the longest straight :O role on Le Mans :D
i liked the electric start from the paddock
Awesome car. As much as I like Audi, it'd be cool if Toyota win Le Mans this year, maybe even the WEC. They deserve it for their persistence.
You are so stupid.
TheEryk03 Says you are stupid, doesn't give any reasoning.
I think the stupid person here is you?

Everthing about this car is immense and really good looking apart from that front nose can we have the original ts030 nose back
That toyota is running very well!! Go Toyota!! make that V8 roar!
Such a wonderful race car!!!
Are these cars faster than f1 cars?
Now this is a proper race car!
Has a strong exhaust note and seems to corner very flat. Will it go 24 hours? We shall see.

0:15 fire up spaceship
If it weren't for RR3 I wouldn't have known this beauty
Im surprised it doesn't have fender rubbing issues.
C'mon, Toyota I wanna see you win! Make us Toyota owners proud! Well prouder at least. If you lose, I'll enter my AE86 Toyota Corolla next year!
To think these only have about 2000cc and are hybrid mental if you ask me
What is this? A slower motorsport than Formula 1 ?
Yes please!
The profile of those headlights is pretty shocking.
It doesn't seem to lean much in the turns.
LINDOOOOO
I love Toyota
how long was the test??
Audi or toyota to win
almost 1000 hp damn..
Beautiful
Thank you drive. :)
Nice. Now TRACKSIDE the Audi R18 and the Porsche 919
I thought there were going to be more onboard shots :(
Looks like its on rails. I could watch it take laps all day
whoa at 4:00 did anyone see that rainbow reflection of the rims and fin? so awesome
What's going on at Drive? No more Mike Spinelli on Mondays and Thursdays, Leo etc etc etc They hit 1,000,000 subs and went on holiday!
This and the new Porsche should give Audi a run for their money.
This year Toyota, Next year Porsche. That would be perfect
damn, it sits like a slot car through those turns
when prototypes sound more like f1 then f1 itself..

the almost vertical front lights makes these lmp1 cars a bit ugly
The whole idea of a hybrid is mpg or litres per 100km, so am I the only sensible person here, what are those figures, let's be practical not wasteful. 25/4/2014.Irish time 16:35.Friday.
That front isn't aerodynamically good look at the head lights even that little extra bit of drag makes a difference...
Omg why aren't you on the design team😱 (sarc.)
What a muppet.
nice sound
hrmmm, looks and sounds great, i really want audi off the podium, i hope its porsche that takes the win but heck with how this things sounds and all, wouldnt mind toyota winning :D
My mustang corners better.
lol!
ha, you though
must be lowered
someone is jelly here! haha
Your Mustang doesn't even know what a corner is
Better enjoy this now boys, at this rate everyone will be running a lawnmower v6 or lower soon.
My heart is with Porsche, but my head says it's Toyota this year, Audi second, and third for Porsche due to reliability issues
Sounds better than the Porsche.
This is what Toyota is doing with their $40 billion surplus
Why does a Hybrid car sound better than an F1 car?
F1 is technically a hybrid now
Because F1 is so tightly controlled now they all have to have a low rpm limiter, where the Lmp1 cars are pretty free.
Horse6L The amount of displacement and cylinders is the difference.
Because the current F1 cars sound like regular road cars on a highway
***** Ever since KERS was introduced they've been technically hybrids.
looks like the Porsche 919 which pretty much looks like the Audi R18. Le Mans prototype's should be renamed to Le Mans clones
at least i dont have to pay to watch drive.

Its a Nisshinbo's capacitor.
They beat Audi and Porsche @ Silverstone 6HR
And everyone thought the Porsche was ugly, this thing looks ugly as hell.
I'm surprised at the lack of Drive's aerodynamic experts on this video. The front fenders are almost vertical. That's not aerodynamic right? :P
Porsche 911 They are almost vertical to direct the air through the middle of the car to create downforce and to reduce the drag created by the holes over the wheels mandated by FIA. Do you really think they would do them this way if it wasn't aerodynamic? BTW, in Le Mans you'll see a completly different front end ;)
ordnas1234 It was sarcasm. I was making fun of the fact that many people thought they knew what was aerodynamic and what wasn't on the 919 video.
If a camry sounded like this...
Whoever is filming needs to zoom out...Or at least stop panning when so zoomed in. Making me dizzy!
