nope, nope...he doesn't even look like he can pass for late 30's. He can "pass" for early 40's... but definitely look like hes in his mid 40's had I not known his age.

Called imposter syndrome. Most successful people, who are honest and self-aware, feel this sensation at some point in their careers.
Well his Dad died he was still shook from trauma. So he was questioning his life choices. I don't know about "imposter syndrome" .
@IdeasEssential I wouldn't say that but they change terms ie: shellshock is PTSD now. I just don't think that guy is qualified to diagnose everybody. Matt was probably a bit depressed I trust what he said himself he knows himself. Existential crisis he said.

@IdeasEssential I am just saying imposter syndrome does not sound like a proper description. Psychiatry seems like a philosophical area of study and depends on who you listen to for instance Freud sounded like a sex obsessed coke head and I prefer Jung. When my own Dad died though I know I had a hard time and was depressed. Not the same as a chemical imbalance that a bi polar person endures they have cycles to emotions you can almost clock on a calender 3 months up three months down for example.

I lost my dad at 12 after he struggled with cancer for 8 months with no discussion ever between he and I about mortality or how either of us felt or thought about it. I would empty his hospital pans, swap out his oxygen tank and he would ask me how my day at school was. That was the extent of us vs. his illness. I've had to live with the repercussions of that my whole life.
When I had my son at 42, I was aware that it was likely that this may be an issue for my son sooner versus later. It'd be nice for him or anybody to be saying goodbye to their parents as your turning 50, but just in case, I talk all the time about mortality and how I feel about it and do what I can to make him feel better about me leaving. I forget who said it but, somebody smarter than I said "Part of being a Parent is preparing kids for your death". He's not happy about it, but if it should occur, at least he knows I'm happy and had a great life and he was a great part of it and I love him very much. Just that simple thought would have done some good for the twelve year old me.
Wise words. I genuinely appreciate it. Lived much of my life in a daydream, this helps me wake up a bit.
If you haven’t already I strongly encourage any one to surrender and put all their faith in Jesus Christ and our father. I lost my mother this year on Easter Day due to an accidental overdose. We had a really close relationship. Felt like I’ve known her for centuries but couldn’t even spend my 21st birthday with her or my wife and I’s 1 year anniversary. I turned to Jesus shortly after and trusted him and he’s shown me love like no one else has or ever will. He heals all and there is nothing out of reach or out of his power.
@@Manakazi thanks, sounds like you might have some experience with this. Not an easy topic and unusual place to have it, but I was listening to Matt and it struck me as a good problem to have. Far better than losing a parent early or worse losing a child ever. I know it's the problem I'd prefer.
Your 12 year old self must have been thinking "ok dad, can we acknowledge what is happening here, even just for a minute?" I can only imagine how torturous it must be even after all these years to know that he passed away before you could address the elephant in the room.
Hmmmm at 12 my father broke into the house (he had been ordered to leave by a judge a few weeks earlier) after his shift bartending. He was screaming about raping my mother and then killing us all...........I ran into the bedroom and tackled him on the bed while he was loading a 12 gauge.

I saw the movie last Sunday. I noticed how Matt was able to not over-play his part to the point I thought he was under-stating the charismatic power of Shelby. Now I understand. I hope when I go that I go quickly so my kids won't suffer to long. Of course none of us have options when it comes to end of life. One fo the things I've always respected about Matt is he is so grounded. Now I know where that came from. he still refers to his father as, "My Dad". That term still brings tears to my eyes when I associate it with my two grown Sons. Theres' a lot of love in that, coming from a mature man. R.I.P. to his "Dad".

I’m fairly new to this channel. I’m fascinated by people who have the ability to put people at ease and just chat with them(hard to explain my point). I know a guy like that and he’s the same way. Put him in any room and he can carry on an interesting conversation, laugh. Carry on or whatever. It’s a great ability imo.
I can't say of which movie is his best work. He is definitely one of the best writers/actor of our time. I wish him longevity
So very hard to lose your dad. So very sorry for his loss and he was so blessed to be able to spend those days with him. He will be so glad he did that in the days to come. You can’t get the time you spend with the ones you love and he must be quite a good man to do that for his dad.

I've now lost both of my parents, and, yes, as Matt says in this interview, it's something I'll deal with forever. It's not the same as feeling 'haunted' by a bad experience, but it makes you *_ponder_* a lot...
Nice to hear an actor expressing himself honestly and without his ego being huge. I’m new to this channel, but saw “Ford vs Ferrari” last night. I liked it-the dramatic movie part that changed the facts around weren’t so bad that they took away from the film. I’m well aware of the facts of the story being a big fan of Sports car/F1 racing...and a big Shelby fan. I’m looking forward to watching the whole interview, thanks for sharing this post.

The fact that Matt Damon of anyone can feel insecure really makes me feel a little better. As horrible as that sounds, but it's just sort of calming to know that he can feel that too
It's a problem of our strange attitude to celebrity.
We expect too much of movie stars in particular. We expect them to be like the people they play in films. They're not. We think we know them. We don't. We deify them until they put a foot wrong, and then we crucify them.
I don't really know why all of this is, except that there are whole industries that depend on maintaining the myth that celebrities are somehow 'other', that they sit above the rest of us. They don't, though. In the end they are just people doing a job, like you or me.

That's a very American perspective where acting is considered one of several talents along with presenting, singing, comedy, and meant to be packaged up in a box of celebrity status that you can sell to media companies and increase your overall market value.
Other countries have a history of acting as its own discipline and its own reward. They have a theatre culture, a radio play culture - hell even amateur dramatics societies still exist.

I just lost my dad in October to cancer and I’m still reeling from the loss. I wish I could take some time off but I can’t because of “life”. But believe me if I could run away four 2 years I would, just grab the wife and kid and fuck off from everything.

As an English teacher whose job it is to have my students enjoy every lesson, I can empathise with actors portraying e.g. a happy, and joyful character when you are feeling the exact opposite. How many times over my 25 year career, so far, I have had students say, "You're always so happy!"... Right.

Matt, two of your scenes were just that Carrol Shelby- the piece in the aftermath of Ken Miles crash and death and meeting Peter on the street next to his home. I never met Shelby, but grew up in Houston and his shadow was huge in the car nut world. I think you did good- one comment; cowboy hat wearers never set the hat down on it's brim- always brim up! Other than that you brought life to a very complicated and singularly occupied man- when Shelby was told he couldn't race anymore it about tore him up. I don't think he ever envisioned himself as a "sports car designer". Nor did he ever want to pick a fight with H2! FR

This movie must have been so difficult.
I just saw this movie. The story it told was really a story of a bond between brothers, a story of man vs the limits of nature and physics, and the story of some cowboys who upset the establishment in an elite sport . I already loved the story of Carroll Shelby. This just romanticized it just a little more. I also had never really thought about Ken miles. Matt Damon and Christian Bale both really gave life to the performances. I also loved that it wasn't another feminist mary sue story. It was truly a story about men.

Had the unique opportunity to meet both Carroll & Matt . I worked for Shelby's Co. In 89.. And Matt during filming this movie.. Both regular people, both highly admired for accomplishments Iin their Respected fields..

Losing someone that close to you is mind altering...It really helps to channel them and remember them at their best, and imagine them standing next to you and encouraging whatever you're creating to turn out what is best for you and YOUR loved ones...You have the ability to interact with your lost loved one in real time. They are just as much a part of you as your own mind...If you loved them, you know EXACTLY how they thought; Think to yourself; "What would She/He say about this?"...It helps...From someone that's lost a youngest sister, murdered by someone I called a brother,who killed himself, and loved no less...And 6 other "brothers" in 5 years...

Quite a look behind the curtain of an actors thoughts. He was great in the film. Heart goes out to Mat for the lose of his father.
Losing his pop is still very raw for him. I get the impression his dad suffered at the end.
"He could sell... you know...you know, could sell anything to anybody.". That was Damon trying to get the point across w/o potentially offending anybody. The wheels were turning...

Lots of comments here about "you can't do this anymore, or you can't do that anymore". You can do whatever you want people. You don't have to cave to the snowflakes. You have the option of taking a stand and not giving a shit if you offend anybody. Being "PC" is not a requirement, it's a choice. I personally think it's all bullshit. As an Aspie, I relate to this. Every day of my life is an act. At the moments when I need to be most upbeat and professional, I'm feeling like curling up in bed and shutting out the world.

I just saw Ford Vs. Ferrari this past Friday. I enjoyed it a lot. I plan on seeing it again. Matt Damon is my favorite. No matter what role he takes on I feel he lets part of himself shine through. He's a genuine guy and in Hollywood that's not so common.

Matt, Once you lose your folks, once you put them in the ground. You understand their sacrifice. Your feelings of loss, of being totally alone, of realizing so many things...Their trials, their tribulations. You start to question the meaning of life. You begin to realize how little time we have. How many things we have wasted our life on. This is why the older you get you become the older quiet guy in the room. Enjoy your folks while you have them. Sorry to hear about your fathers passing. Matt, you have not wasted your life and you are not ridiculious. You have made some amazing movies and given minds something to ponder. Your first big movIe, GWH, the ending, you know the meaning of life. Do the best you can with what you got.

Carroll Shelby had a crapton of insecurities and fears. On various occasions, he'd lost races, racing teams, a driving career, and sponsorships on nothing more than a twist of fate, health, or simply the whim of an owner or manufacturer. He was constantly selling because he knew that at any second, people could stop buying for no other reason than their mood or the day of the week.

There was a scene in Good Will Hunting where Matt is wearing a Shelby jacket! Did he KNOW the future?
It's rare that I can go into a film and have it "turn" me 180 degrees from my preconceived bias. This film did that. First of all, I thought the title was just plain "stupid". Secondly, the subject matter is something that I have little interest in. It turned out that Damon and Bale both gave great performances and made it work, and work really well. I'm not going to say it made my top 10 of all time, but it's a fun watch, and has enough emotional wallop to make it "rewatchable". It's exists somewhere in that "very good to excellent" band, some unexpectedly satisfying character exploration and a number of fun "set pieces", too.
It's kinda cute how they each dressed up as a pole smokers from Boston for this sit down.
