My husband and I will be married 50 yrs in June, all these years I have cut his hair and my own and I do my own manicures and pedicures. We have slways done our own housework, gardening etc. Many of our friends and family hire out all these services but we don’t live up to the Jonesses. We are now retired and rarely eat out. Again, many friends and family perceive this as strange, or cheap but we really enjoy our home cooked meals and like to stay away from noisy crowded restaurants. When we worked we took our lunch to work from dinner leftovers or homemade sandwiches. We live simply but a very satisfying, frugal, debt free, mortgage free life for which we are immensely grateful. We were not Alwsys good about managing our money but life and Dave Ramsey as well as channels like your have taught us a lot the last 30 years. Thank you for your inspiring videos!

I cut my own hair. Learned how to do it on TH-cam years ago. This has saved me thousands of dollars over the years. I had to purchase a $10 pair of cutting sheers

I have found holiday items, Christmas or birthday cards at my church's thrift shop. We buy casual clothes and I buy earrings there. I also donate. They put the money back into the community and local charities.😊

I dont buy, magazines, hair stuff, new clothes, food subscriptions, face stuff, hair dyes, pedicures or manicures(what a WASTE!!!)....new furniture, new cars, and several of the other things you mentioned. We have a barbque which is over 30 years old, ditto for our stereo and our Lazy Boy. We find things other people have put at the curb and we e ither fix them up and use them or give them to others to use (which is very popular in the case of useful older bicycles!!!) We just want to see the least amount of waste possible in our beautiful world and this is our gesture towards making that happen. Keep up your great work, Jane and Mike. You ROCK!!!

We started living really frugally and mindfully one year ago. Until then, we already did a lot right, but since then, a lot has changed. We no longer have our hair cut, we do it ourselves. No more meals out, no more visits to the cinema (Corona helped with that one :)), and so on. Today, we have checked how much we saved in this one year. I could not believe it! It's so much that I can say: I have never had so much money on my bank account before (I'm 44). You are a big inspiration for me and my husband!

At 44 you still have time to turn your life around and benefit from your frugality in your future life. I look at any money I save this money is money I will have for harder times. I know in retirement that my income will be halved so I know by saving today I will increase my income in retirement. I don’t go without now and I allocate money entertainment but I keep it with the allocated budget.

I rarely, if ever, order anything on line. Perhaps twice in the last 5 years, during Covid, I placed an order for a small item. But I no longer do now that I can get out and shop locally. I prefer to pay with cash and in person.

Our list is almost, the same as yours with the exception of our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription in the summer. Basically we buy shares in a local farm and every week we get a delivery of whatever is in season. Makes me be creative to use up whatever is delivered and it supports a small farmer. Probably not the cheapest way to buy vegetables but it is our way to buy local and support our farmer.

    • @RhondaLorch
      @RhondaLorch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@catseyes8377 Basically yes. We pay a share amount established by the farmer (about $500 in our case) and in return we get 10 weekly deliveries of enough veggies for a family of 4 along with a dozen eggs. It is picked the day it is delivered so really fresh.

Thank for once again providing such informed and valuable advice. I was a habitual purchaser , feeling a little low go on treat yourself ….. not once a month but three or four times a week . Had to stop . Cold turkey was the only way . It certainly wasn’t easy as I am retired but with no debt but dwindling savings I needed all the encouragement I could find . Where did I find this…..? not friends, not family but your channel. I binge watch . With my morning cuppa I say “Good Morning Jane “ and I am set for the day. My life is calmer, richer and I have found joy in the simplest of pleasures…. Reading, walking ,lifting weights in my bathroom…..if it doesn’t cost money I am IN. The only piece of advice I can give is for people to look long and hard at their pension funds ….whatever you think you need to live on in retirement double or triple it. You are never too young to start. By the way I have stopped using my range cooker . Slow cooker . Small oven or microwave….the way to go . Thank you again you are so appreciated. I am more than surviving but then I only have myself to please 💕🥰💕 Bless you both 💕🥰💕

It was hard to come up with something we don't buy (which is why I watch your channel as I need to be far more frugal than I am). I did come up with two, though. We don't buy new furniture, except for mattresses, and we don't buy cars new. We research, and find the vehicle with the lowest miles and most reliability. It inevitably ends up being a Toyota. Good video Jane and Michael - very thought provoking. Thank you!

I went through the comments and saw a couple that didn't agree with your lifestyle. I ticked off most of your list except for make up and my moisturiser is good old E45 cream. I enjoy saving as much as i can and tackling any issues for as little money as possible. I'm not saving for anything special but the thought of having money behind me in the form of savings gives me a stress free comfortable life. I don't need to spend to feel fulfilled with my life, like you I find the simple pleasures in life make me happy..it's nice to stop and smell the roses instead of competing with the rat race or keeping up with the Jonse's .Great vid Jane and Mike.

blue beanie, 5 energy saving white lamps, 14 outside solar lights, veggie seeds, 6 throws, 5 long sleeved tees, 1 sweater, electric grooming shaver, sugar, self rising flour, baking powder, at 50% off. We needed some replacements. We purchased distilled water to

When I REALLY needed to cut back the first thing to go was manicures. I've managed to survive and actually my nails are MUCH healthier now. I shudder when I think back to what I felt was necessity and how much it cost me back then. One thing I don't do is buy new clothes ... clothes, and anything else I need, get purchased at the thrift shop and I actually prefer it that way. I mean I COULD buy those things new, but somehow I just like things better that had a life before I purchased them. All I could think throughout this video was how much simpler your life is from eliminating these things! Thanks for the inspiration.

I’ve been retired since I was 56 I’m 60 now. I’m not a huge spender but share a few of those things on your list. I don’t think I’ll ever be frugal. I do pick up a lot of good ideas from you and definitely do try to follow them. I love your meal videos and have enjoyed making some of your recipes. It’s nice to see how people live in other countries. Interesting to see what food, housing and other things cost. The prices of most everything have shot up in the past two years. Rent has pretty much doubled, we are home owners so I consider myself very fortunate. Houses have gone up to 1 to 2 times what they were a couple years ago. Food prices are ridiculous!

Great video, lots to think about. I've never had a new car. Right now I have a 2003 Honda Element with 250,000 miles on it . My brother is a mechanic, so he helps me keep it in tip top running shape. I don't wear expensive clothes around the house just warm ones this time of year. I do quilt and by the odd piece of fabric now and again. I also knit but I buy very little yarn. I love to knit scarfs, hats, and baby sweaters. Most the patterns are free online. I don't buy expensive cuts of meat but everything has gotten so expensive. I buy 2nd hand shoes on ebay. I only run the dish washer when it's full... same with the laundry. I do buy a few fuchsia starts, geraniums and annuals for my flower pots every spring. I cut flowers from my yard for bouquet 💐 on my table. So lot of cost cutting around my house. I don't feel deprived at all. I feel blessed with contentment. God bless you, for sharing your tips with us. 😉

I hadn't really thought about it, but I don't buy any of the things you listed, either. Isn't it interesting that I still have a very rich life, own and use beautiful things. None of those things on your thoughtful list would add to my quality of life. I have plenty to do, I have more than I need. I can buy anything I need for my home, travel, or personal interests, but I keep all of that simple and uncomplicated. Learning what constitutes "enough" for my way of living, and making sure I meet my baseline for satisfaction and contentment, but not going beyond that, was important. Understanding my soul deep priorities took away a lot of superficial "wants." My personal "wealth" (which is more than just money), keeps expanding in unexpected ways, due to not wasting my resources. Thanks for helping put all of that life knowledge and useful, productive actions into perspective with your videos.

I love listening to you. So far as I can tell, you and I live very similar financial lives. I used to spend more, but I was always a saver. Now that I'm medically retired and on Social Security Disability Income, which is very low, I'm basically on a no-spend rest of my life. I buy only the most minimal needs. I, too, keep using what I already have until it's totally used up and not fixable any more. Then, I figure out if I can still use any parts. Example: if a piece of clothing is too threadbare yo wear anymore,I cut out the parts that are not threadbare, and use those bits for something else, like baby and child clothing, napkins, place mats, table runners, sometimes wrapping cloth instead of wrapping paper, cleaning cloths, etc. I do that with everything.
I might be a bit extreme in my approach, but I don't have money to spend anymore...well I do give myself a little pocket money, about $10 a month. I'm do used to not spending that I don't spend it, though.
It warms my heart to hear that you and Mike live very similarly. My guess is that you're not extreme like I am, but we are certainly on the same wavelength!

I buy most of the items in your list; however, many are very infrequent purchases. For example, I don't typically buy soda pop, but occasionally I get a taste for a ginger ale or a coca cola, do I will buy a small bottle and that satisfies me. I eat out/get takeout maybe once or twice monthly for a small amount. I pay for You Tube TV but I don't add on any movie channels or subscribe to Netflix or Amazon Prime. I only grocery shop every 2 weeks. I am disabled and rely on a delivery service to get my groceries. I shop at Walmart and pay an annual fee for unlimited free deliveries. I have found by shopping every other week I do save myself over $100/month and that really helps with the budget. I will usually need another gallon of milk in between but a neighbor is always kind to pick it up for me in between my shopping trips. Thanks for giving us so many things to consider eliminating or at least cutting way back on.

We had riverford boxes in the distant past. I also used to see their massive lorries rolling off the French ferries into Plymouth daily as they have or had farms in France too. We’ve met Guy, nice man. He is passionate but had no idea that people can’t afford a £16 free range organic chicken. We were given a tour of the whole operation when I was writing. We went to the on-site restaurant too for a tour and free lunch. We came to our senses that we had middle class aspirations with working class money and shopped in Aldi instead.

Love your video. Unfortunately, I'm not as frugal but more frugal than my friends and family .I love listening to you. In 5 to 6 years, I plan to retire. I live in the United States in a very large city, but I find ways to cut back. ( trying to pay off my house)I have friends and family members to give me the luxury items I don't buy as a gift. I am natural with my hair . I don't wear makeup, only lipstick from the dollar store. My SUV is 13 years old, with 80,000 miles . Thanks again for sharing good helpful information.

I will give you one thing we do buy and a couple we don’t buy.
    We DO purchase water.
We live in a small town that has BAD water!
I was so disappointed when I found out that the water was bad! I was never one to purchase water (except for hurricane season, you have to have a good stock of water for when a storm comes through and damages the water treatment plants).
A couple things we do NOT purchase are a lot of canned foods. Example We purchase “dry beans” and cook them to store in our freezer. Easy to thaw and use with our meals.
Second thing we do NOT purchase are grocery delivery services. We go to the grocery and purchase our food. When the pandemic stopped us from going into the grocery we ordered online and drove to pick our groceries up. That service is free.
Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks with all of us!!
God bless and keep you both safe and sound.

This past year I moved to an area that uses a lake for its water supply. In the hot months the water has a strong algae taste and smell. I experimented with several filters and found that the ZeroWater filter pitcher does a really good job ( no affiliation, just experience). The filters are about $15US and, for me, need to be replaced after about 8 weeks, but that is much better than all those plastic bottles.

We find it easier to drink enough water if it has a bit of fizz but don't want to buy it because of the the cost and the single use plastic. Our son bought us a Soda Stream a couple of years ago. What a marvellous thing! We have 2 litres of water a day for 7 months a year for about £25 worth of gas.

I enjoyed the video content and especially the short nature clips in between segments. I also think your "to each their own" attitude is very refreshing. We can learn from one another without being judgemental.
Here are a few of my "don't buys" I haven't seen mentioned:
No eyeglass lens upgrades. I have simple lined bifocals without scratch or anti-reflective coatings.
    No caffeinated beverages.
No new toothpaste. A tube lasts me years as I use only a tiny dab each day -- it's always well past expiry by the time I've finished.
No gardening equipment (I may need to make an exception soon to re-pot a flower from a friend, although I also wouldn't be surprised to scavenge a pot somewhere and clean it up).
No furniture recovering/reupholstering. I throw sheets, blankets, cushions, or throws over worn down or stained furniture.
No new art. With friends and family in the arts, I have more than enough pieces to rotate around and can't find proper space to display it all.
No new gaming PC. Mine is 11 years old and upgraded with a 6 year old graphics card. It works fine for what I enjoy playing.
No new dishes or silverware. These last practically forever with care, although I may need to add a few forks and spoons to replace lost ones soon.
    No new tools or toolboxes.
    No air travel.

Great list Jane, there's quite a few things I don't but either - I no longer buy commerial cleaning products on the whole as I make my own where I can, I also don't buy deoderant anymore as I use baking powder (which was recommended on another frugal channel) and it works perfectly fine for me and there's no more chemicals or plastic containers to worry about.

Towels do last a long time. I just recently had to replace my towels as they were getting rather threadbare. I realized they had to be about 15 years old and they were inexpensive towels as I prefer a smaller thinner towel and they tend to be cheaper I also prefer the type of facecloth that is cheaper too. I need some hand towels but haven’t found any inexpensive ones I like. It chaps me that they charge almost as much for a hand towel as they do for a bath towel.

Lol. Towels! Oh dear Jane, I had an obsession with towels for a while; it was bordering on unhealthy. 🤣 I would stroke them in the store & next thing, they were in my cupboard! I like towels that are thin and scratchy.. I do have an obsession with finding the right ones and I bought a lot of cheap, clearance ikea towels that were the cheapest ones, unbleached and thin.. I think they were around $4 aus each.. don’t regret them at all. Have enough to last me out.
I can’t stand the feel of thick, plush towels, so I am not tempted there at all.. so, other towel obsession ladies, you are safe from me in the shops.
I do like Laura Ashley bedding as it’s 100% cotton and I am guilty of buying several doona covers from eBay.. I can’t sleep well on anything that’s a polyester/cotton mix..
But, I’m telling myself I have more than enough.

Yes I have cloth napkins but I just hate stains on them. Oil or tomato sauce so difficult to remove. I reserve the cloth for guests. Since I live alone, a 1000 paper napkins goes a long way. I have loads of makeup from years gone by. No need to buy more. Any dresses or skirts I have, where bought at thrift shops and as I am in my second year of paying off my house, clothes are on the no spend list. Got plenty of clothes. Great job with this. Yes, I buy generic products so supermarket own brands cleaning products: dish wash tablets, wash up liquid, laundry liquid, toilet cleaner . We can also buy refills here too. I buy a generic spray cleaner and clean everything with it. I wash the floors using a tiny amount of laundry liquid in hot water and a mop.
