These videos are extremely helpful to a newbie like myself! I am on number six and jlearnjng much faster than I thought I could. Jess is an excellent teacher! Thank you!
Jess, I am going slow but doing it right. I watched this video for the 10 time it seems. I now have it. Thank you for the videos. Please do not take them down. I got your book last week and it helps also. Thank you for your kindness and gentle voice.
I haven't left a comment that I recall from the earlier videos; however, I would like to rectify that now. These are some of the best videos that I have found on the hammer dulcimer. Very slow and methodical; building on a foundation that progresses smoothly. You speak very clearly and concisely. I just got my hammer dulcimer, 28 FEB 2016; and it is now 03 MAR 2016 - and in these few short days from working along with Jess; I feel that I will be able to learn to play the instrument.
These videos are really and truly very helpful. I started watching them before the first QuaranTUNE Dulcimer Festival, and I've been continuing since. I feel that I am making progress at both learning my instrument and how to play it! Thank you so much!
I have just finished video 6. It was most informative and easy to follow. Thankyou so much. I have had my hammered dulcimer 2 weeks. These videos are so easy to follow.
I am on #6 right now. I am just loving this series of videos! I have a lot of music background but have been stumbling some trying to master this instrument. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful knowledge.
I've just finished video 6 and after owning my instrument for a week, it's finally starting to make sense. I'm so grateful that you are sharing this knowledge! Thank you many times over! This will get me through another cold Covid winter! Gonna go and order the book now.
Thank you so much for these free lessons. They are easy to follow and I am very happy with the progression I am making. I would highly recommend these lessons to anyone learning to play.
An absolutely great and amazing teacher. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. They are very helpful I Thank God for letting me find you. I am learning so much from them. I don't know what I would do if you hadn't took the time to make these videos. I am very very very grateful and thankful for you. So Thank You Very Much Sir. I can't thank you enough I really appreciate you.
These are fantastic videos, very practical and useful. They follow a logical progession, are easy to understand, and have excellent teaching skills. I'm glad I found them !
Thank you so much for sharing these videos for free. My dulcimer has been lying untouched for months because the task of learning was defeating me (and I was too busy, but really that was an excuse), but now I've found your videos I'm doing a little bit every day and it's all starting to make sense now!
Thanks so much for these lessons! I have music theory knowledge, but approaching the hammered dulcimer is different than I'm used to, and I appreciate the way you approach the lessons and the importance of the basics!
These instructional videos are so clear and concise! I am learning techniques and theory that I was unable to grasp from books alone. I have just purchased the companion manual and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. Very good job, Jess!
I have really enjoyed your videos. I am the least musically inclined but the way you break it down gives me the confidence I need to learn how to play the hammered dulcimer! Thank You!
Thank you so much for providing these videos. I am working through your first book -- which is also great -- and it is helpful to stop and watch these videos as I go. And thank you for being helpful as I have corresponded about your materials by email.
Hi Jess, Very helpful videos and the NEW Basic "Instruction Manual" is Great. I know a lot of the beginner stuff but going thru all to get the most out of the book. Thank you!~)) Curly
Thank you so much for your encouraging videos. I was quite intimidated by all those strings but you break it down into very digestible parts! Your encouragement helps, too. I'm using a dulcimer app for now but I do believe I will purchase a real instrument soon. Looking forward to more lessons, Blessings!
Jess, I sent you an email but I may have titled it with the wrong video, I've watched each one a few times then go back for review. That helps with committing to memory for me. Thanks again, great teaching technique and great quality videos! Blessings!
On the second sheet in the video, the base string of the treble bridge for the G box, I think it says C on the base note, shouldn't it be a G or am I missing something?
Had to listen several times. Progression of major chords. Playing 1,3,5 in the chord but the progression is to the 1,4,5 chord. I'll figure it out .... or listen again. 😊
Hi Jess, Ron Schnitzer here. The new guy, Was listening to lesson on chord progression and am a little confused. Noticed it was a 1,4, 5 progression but when you were playing it you were playing 1,5,4 . can you clear up my confusion? Is it the same?
Hi Linda. There are no stupid questions! The 1-3-5 strings make up a major chord. For instance, in a G scale, G =, A=2, B=3, C=4 and D=5. A G manor chord is G + B + D (the first, third, and fifth notes in the scale). A 1-4-5 chord progression refers to chords, not notes. So if you are playing in the key of G, and you make a chord out of every note in the scale, the most common chords are the G, C, and D, which are the first, fourth, and fifth chords. Hope this helps.
@@JessDickinson Thank you. It did help. I had kind of figured it out (finally) that there was a difference between a chord progression and a chord, but it sure threw me for a loop when I was trying to work through that video!

Thank you!
Are you playing the chords in 4/4 time?
Sometimes... and sometimes in 4/3 or 6/8
I'm feeling really stupid at this point. How is it that this is called a 1-4-5 chord progression when you are hitting the 1-3-5 strings????
