    Hey Red Panda.
I loved this video and wanted to share an idea I had to try and solve your issue with 16 card limit.
PCIe 1.0 bandwidth is 250MB/sec per lane
PCIe 2.0 bandwidth is 500MB/sec per lane
PCIe 3.0 bandwidth is 1GB/sec per lane
PCIe 4.0 bandwidth is 2GB/sec per lane
The total PCIe lane bandwidth of your threadripper is 32GB/sec as it has 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes.
If you were to go into your bios and change the PCIe mode to 1.0, it should free up tons of lanes for gpus to use at a lower bandwidth. If you do the math, this should in theory allow you do have 128 gpus connected to your motherboard with a bandwidth of 250MB/sec per card instead of 16 with a bandwidth of 2GB/sec as the amount of available lanes would be increased by about 8x taking you from 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes to 128 PCIe 1.0 lanes allowed by the available bandwidth of your CPU.
1.0 speeds should be sufficient for mining as there is way way way less data being transmitted as compared to rendering graphics in a video game and should not impact hashrates. If you really wanted to you could run in PCIe 2.0 mode and have about 64 cards connected at 500MB/sec bandwidth per card instead, but 1.0 should work just fine.
I do not have enough cards available to me yet to test this myself, but I would love to see what you can do with this knowledge.

Hi RedPanda! I think you already used all your pcie lanes. Every Card is using 4 lanes, and if you multiply it by 16 cards, you’ll have 64. 1 pcie lane is just measured as bandwidth with the CPU. GPU’s need between 4 and 16 lanes in order to work efficiently. If you had a threadripper with 128 lanes, your project I am sure will be successful!. Love watching your channel.

But like a z270 board only has 16 lanes but that can support 6 gpus, right? 6 cards * 4 lanes = 24 and not 16.
And another thing, The splitter uses only a pcie16x1 slot and can support 4 gpus. So how dose that work? You can´t get 4 lanes from a pcie 16x1 slot, or am I wrong??

since its an x16 slot, it would only allow 16. When you add another card, it "in theory" the system will automatically drop all the slots down to x8. I bet you if you don't put more then 8 cards per PCIE slot, it would work

    • @dantyrrell5369
      @dantyrrell5369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

check the board specs. It would say something like "if only 1 PCIE slot is being used it will be X16. If 2 or more PCIE slots are used they will only be X8."

you cant run a gen3 threadripper in that mobo.
BUT you already got the m2. to pcie adapters. this board has 3 m.2 slots. what if you use the pcie splitters in these? they are all pcie x4.
    did that work at all?

What needs to happen to get one splitter to work is it plug and play or does the bios need settings changed reason I'm asking is I have a optiplex 790 Mobo that I want to run 2 gpu from but only the pcie x 16 work. When a gpu is in the pcie x4 slot it causes the pc to power cycle. The bios only has the option to enable a pcie lol

I've been struggling with those, specially the ones that don't go directly into the slot, they have a USB cable that connects them. The gpus connect to them go down constantly. Sometimes the rig stays up for a day or two, other times it can't hold for a few minutes. Seems to be related to the room temperature.

    re: floppy cable
    It's not shorting.
It remembers the previous state on the breakout board so if one was powered on and the other was powered off independently of each other, it will remember that.
    It's a dumb toggle.
You just need to power on the other one that isn't powering on together separately and then power both of them off, connect the floppy cable, and then it will work.

Holy smokes this is beyond my kung fu. I would have loved a step by step on this. The thing to remember about GPU mining is that in many instances pools charge by the miner so if you could have 32 GPU's on your single rig you only get charged once as opposed to twice for 13 GPU's on 2 rigs. I would love to build one of these, please show in detail how you did it.

    • @MrUncrustable

EDIT: nevermind, just checked the motherboard manual for that Phantom 6, it supports 16X on all slots, at the same time.
Does that motherboard allow for more than one PCIe slot to run at 16X? That bifurcation card forces the slot to run 4x4x4x4. You should have plenty of lanes, but I see so many strange restrictions on motherboards. Where if PCIe slot 1 is utilizing 16X, it disables / limits other slots.
I don't know why they would have such a restriction on Threadripper platforms but that could be it.

Hello. I have watch your video about 24 and now 16 GPU. If I'm right in previous video you wasn't use any mining GPU edition (like P104-100 etc) and you got just 13 running. I'm thinking that even without your new adapters you can still get up 16GPU running if you use a P-series GPU.
If I can make a advice try to use more P-series GPU or added AMD cards.
I have a filling that with mixed Nvidia+P+AMD you will reach the goal.
In my opinion just a driver's now stop your project.
For example look on Asus B250 Mining Edition... They said about mixed GPU to reach up 19GPU...
All people said that PCIE lines, that GPU tak 4 line?! Can you explain to me why I put running 13GPU at CPU i7, i5, i3 (skylake) and G4560... All of them have 16PCIe lines... And why u use a PCIE X1 :p
I really think that problem is a GPU drivers... I guess the maximum load is 13 GPU (like 13 gaming GPU +13mining GPU) probably mining GPU is like separate somehow in drivers.

All Threadripper (non-pro) have 64 PCIe limit. You'd need to look at the WX80 board and Threadripper Pro (or equally an Epyc setup) to get 128 PCIe lanes.
As for 16 limit, that is an interesting one, guessing Linux setup on this would also limit it?
Try to see if you can add an NVME drive and see if it gest detected as the "17"th PCIE device. if it fails, then we'll know 16 would be (potentially) hard limit.

Dude, the MSI Trio needs more than the thermal pads. Take the metal plate off that presses against the pads and put thermal compound under it, it is missing on one side! MASSIVE difference

That helium miner you shilled out 7 months ago still hasn't shipped to anyone, just wondering if you have any idea what's going on with that?

What if you tried this with an Intel setup? I saw bits was able to get 21 GPUs running on a Asus mining expert, so I'm carious how much of a role the CPU plays in the own operation.

Could you not plug an x4,x4,x4 into one of the slots of another x4,x4,x4,x4 ?

Be careful, the other day I was messing with my rig and I left a little daughter board just sit on one of the slots by accident and fired the rig and it literally started welding itself to the slot. Seeing all these carbs into cards into slots left right and upside down has me worried one could "slip" out over time and do what happened to me. By the way my rig didn't turn itself off, PSU, MOBO, nothing turned off i had to unplug it to make it stop. BE CAREFUL GUYS!

Did you try plugging the 4 way splitter directly into the motherboard? 🤔

It's amazing that the board Partners make so much money on each board but they use the cheapest products. Good thermal pads don't even cost that much money

I assume you changed the PCIe Slot1 Config to x4x4x4x4, but did you change PCIe Slot4 Config to x4x4x4x4 as well?

If using one PCI-E Slot with all 16 Lanes would let you run out of PCIE-Lanes, no one could use these other two slots using a single GPU (without a adapter).
Think about it, you buy such a $250 Board for your gaming Rig and after putting a GPU in it you cannot use these other 2x 16x Slots.
Is there a option to enable Multi-GPU support in the bios? (for using crossfire or sli?). The Manual says you can use all three ports in SLI/crossfire mode. As far as i know many mainboards need to cut down some pci-e lanes when used in sli mode. Maybe if you split the second PCI-E port you cannot use all 16x of the first slot. maybe everyone of these ports gets cut down to 8x!?
Try using two of these 4x4x4x4x adapter with two 4x-gpu-USB-splitter-card adapters if this works try using a 16x riser cable to try using three of these 4x4x4x4x adapters with six of these 4x-gpu-USB-splitter-card adapters.

28 lines busy 4x4x4x4 from each you take x1x1x1x1 and multiply to four, rest 3 lanes from each connn. not working but reserved. Total 16 +12 =28
