  • Johnny McEvoy sings “Those Brown Eyes” live from The Stable Sessions
This sentimental song of love and loss fits perfectly with Johnny's catalogue of nostalgic songs full of emotion. The soft sound of the harmonica sets a note of longing in this beautiful rendition of this classic Irish folk song.
"I can’t remember where or when I first heard this song. Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains gave it to me one night in Abbey Tavern, in 1966, I recorded it on my first album “For the Poor and for the Gentry” the next year. I still sing it on occasions."

    Lyrics:
One evening when the sun was low my brown eyes whispered,
    "I must go."
Not one second would she wait.
She kissed my cheek and left my gate.
Those brown eyes I loved so well.
Those brown eyes I long to see.
How I long for those brown eyes.
Strangers they have grown to be.
One night I met her on the street.
I tipped my hat but I could not speak.
Another man was by her side.
Soon I thought she'd be his bride.
Those brown eyes I loved so well.
Those brown eyes I long to see.
How I long for those brown eyes.
Strangers they have grown to be.
'Twas just a year ago today,
They laid my own brown eyes away.
Six long years for me she cried.
It was her brother by her side.
Those brown eyes I loved so well.
Those brown eyes I long to see.
How I long for those brown eyes.
Strangers they have grown to be.

This is one of my all time favourite songs, with excellent lyrics, and the great Johnny McEvoy sings a wonderful version. The backing music is top class also. Johnny McEvoy comes from County Offaly, Ireland, and is a legend of Irish music. He has been entertaining audiences in Ireland & abroad since the mid sixties. Johnny has recorded country, folk, and Irish songs, as well as writing classic songs of his own. Many thanks to Trad Nua for uploading this magnificent video. Enjoy this beautiful song ! 5*+
