  • It's a well-known fact that Malcolm Blight kicked the longest goal in VFL/AFL history - except it's not true. He hasn't even recorded the longest goal by a North Melbourne player - the man who currently holds both records is a small forward, who kicked it by accident. Very few people know it - but the Gaz-man wants to change that. In this video, the GAZ-man goes over the history of the longest goals in footy, and breaks down just how a man most famous for a goal scored from three metres out managed to drive a long one home, From 89 Metres.
    Massive thanks to Useless AFL stats for getting out the measuring tape on some of the bigger goals scored. Link to their work is here: www.uselessafls...

    I think what made Blights's look bigger is that it was a lot more powerful and was in the air well after the goals whereas all the others were dribbling bounces

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Absolutely, I'd agree. Malcolm got a huge amount of hang time on his torp, and that thing went higher than most I've seen.
      If he kicks that flatter, it goes well over 80m imo

      Blight's kick was goal side of the centre square. The Carlton ground was lengthened when the outer grandstand was built sometime after this kick. Before the ground was lengthened, the 50 metre arc, when it was introduced, was a lot closer to the square. I'm sure it would have been the longest kick if he had been further out as the ball was above the goal posts and then into the crowd. I was there, It was an important kick, but not that long to the goal line.

    I remember looking this up after you mentioned it in the St Kilda video and my initial reaction was just as unimpressed as everyone at the ground that day- I wonder if in the time the ball had been bouncing people had forgotten just how far back he was when he actually kicked it. • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Something I should have established is that these kicks are measured from the kick to the goalmouth or the first bounce of the ball, whichever is longer.
      Blight’s 76m kick was taken probably 60m from goal, some 29m shy of Wells' field position. For me, this makes Fehring’s kick all the nore incredible considering where he was on the field.
      Also by this logic, 2 of the 4 goals scored from furthest away were against the Crows, which is a very Crows thing to have happened.

    A 1981 match between Collingwood and St. Kilda saw an 89m goal kicked by Jeff Fehring of St. Kilda, minutes after he was reported. He received a free kick and torpedoed an 86m kick, which bounced an extra three metres for a goal. It was one of only three of Fehring's goals

    Out of a post goal ruck contest at Princes Park in the early '80s, Michael Tuck swung onto a kick after the ball landed in his hands at the defensive side of the centre circle(the little circle, not the monster centre circle of today). He didn't take a step, he literally just swung his body in a circle and dropped it to his boot. The ball at least was kicked foward for the Hawks and Lethal and co followed the mongrel spinning Sherrin towards the forward pocket. The mass of fwd/def players all shifted out left in a posse as the ball then began to swing back towards the goal. As this ball was a floater and had been kicked very high in the uncontrolled manner In the mess of the centre contest....Tuck by now was himself trackong the ball inside 50 and had begun to thriw his arms in the air. The Hawks crowd watched in a mix of stun and celebration as this ball swung alk the way back to bounce inpkay just before the goal line and straight over after the bounce. Leigh went to Tucky who was in cheeky celebration mode and gave him a littke push and shove(all in jest) as payback for making him run feom full firward to the fwd pocket and back.
    It still is the greatest kick I've ever seen. Tuck had no momentum ither than his body weight turning him. He knew perfectly when to drop that footy amd he knew, running fwd of centre that it would score a goal. It was surreal. The crowd didn't know what to do. The goal umpire signakled a goal as clearly no one had touched it since it left Tuck's boot but he hadn't seen it leave Tuck's boot. The umpire confirmed a clean kick and the fkags were finally waved and the entire ground realised how amazing a goal Tuck had kicked.
    I remember waitong tonread about this sensational goal in the newspapers, hear about it on the radio post game commentary. Did I see footage of it on the 'replay/highlights' that evening? No. I've tried to figure out which game it was, the exact season but considering I'm now 49 and so many other things have hapoened since then.....I cannot recall everything perfectly. What I do recall perfectly was Michael Tuck's goal from back of centre. The mongrel floater that could and did. This is where American sports fans have so much footage to fall back on. Every local NFL/NBA/NHL team had a local station filming the local sides games. We had channel 7 choosing games, setting fixture and stuffing up things for future generations looking for factual evidence of these feats of magnificence. Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein have it easy. Kidding, their research is supreme.

      I feel that, the SANFL had exactly the same problem - only one game televised per week, and very little publicly available footage. It's such a shame we miss gems like Tuck's goal, which sounds like something he was absolutely capable of - the lad had ridiculous power for a wiry bloke.

    Great video, glad you're celebrating Daniel Wells who was a really underrated player both during his career and since his retirement. But calling him a small forward who was known for work in close, well, it sounds like you only know him from the jackie chan goal. North supporters absolutely know him as a booming kick, it was almost his signature, and he played the best years of his career as an on-baller.

    Surely a longest kick comparison should be measured from the distance it travelled from contact with the boot to where it lands. How far it bounces from there is arbitrary in this context.
    That said, the longest kick (and goal) I witnessed live was at Victoria Park in the mid seventies. On a heavily overcast day Collingwood’s tall and lanky wingman, Wayne Gordon,kicked a torp from just inside the defensive side of the centre circle and it sailed through the goals at nearly goal post height as it was descending. The rowdy crowd as one ceased making any noise as we all sat ( and stood in those days) with stunned silence and disbelief of what we just witnessed. Wayne Gordon kicked this almighty goal off one step and it went almost as high as it went long. As I recall there was no wind assistance of note just a still overcast day. The feat was so unusual it garnered the same response as it would if we witnessed a UFO landing in front of us.

      I guess because it was a big kick to win an important game. Big kick, big context situation too.
      Wells, McNamara and Fehring kicked theirs in losses, in teams that had losing seasons, in matches that got lost to memory.

      While I agree that there should be a seperate category for bouncing goals, Blight’s kick was neither the furthest of its type (McNamara) nor the kick from the furthest out from goal of its type (Lynch/Barrot, or even Noel Pettingill if his story is true).

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The non-bouncing goals are actually measured to the point of first bounce - apologies for not clarifying that, I really should have.
      Blight’s kick was from about 58m out, ending up around 13m back in the crowd. This has been verified by Useless AFL Stats and Fox Footy, and correlates to measurements taken from Google Maps.

    Paul Harridine's goal for Woodville vs Port (also at Footy Park) was from just forward of centre and easily cleared the players (including Malcolm Blight) in the goal square, so approx 80 metres in the air: th-cam.com/video/HxuDupZk7xU/w-d-xo.html

      You're pretty bang on! He recieved the ball 82m out, took 6 steps (say a 6m run max) and fired. With approximately 2.5m of carry after the line, I rate that at 79.5 metres.

    Why are goals not on the full counted?

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question
      There's two ways of measuring a goal - to the bounce, and to the goalmouth.
      Throughout this video's production, I was under the assumption that all goals were measured by distance to the goalmouth, hence Wells' inclusion.
      As it turns out, all punt goals are measured to the bounce (this means Blight’s 76m kick was around 58m from goal, for example). I'm planning on expanding this concept in the future, sorting goals separately by both measures.

  • @Andy-zw7no
    @Andy-zw7no 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The wells Goal is not record because the ball bounce too many times.
    In my opinion it's only a record then the ball clears the Goal line on the full without any bounces.
    The Mcnamara Goal is still the official Record however it was still nice Goal by wells.

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The measurements I've got here are from the kick to the goalmouth, or to the point where it landed, whichever is further.
      McNamara just pips Blight in terms of goals without bouncing, with Quinten Lynch in a close third - not counting Billy Barrot's, which I think went in on the full but the footage is low quality so it's hard to tell

    How far do you judge this Fletcher goal as being? th-cam.com/video/CnPQ2aKpj-c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2x5NJNWGHUwB7lOU
    From the moment it hits his foot to the placement where it lands? I think this why this record is so hard to pin down, since the are variables like wind, rain, bouncing, whether you count where it lands past the goal line, etc.
