Smokey Yunick, the reason that they made rules at the race track. He could find a way to get an advantage and they would have to make up all new rules. Amazing ingenuity from an irascible rascal. Some of the first hand stories I have heard I'm sure don't do him justice. You gotts love him. God bless you Smokey!
I wish smokey was still here. I'm currently reading his book and I have found him to be one of the best WWII Pilots to tell it like it is. I agree with his view on the France family and I think racing owes alot to Smokey.
"There's still 99 more Tony Stuart's out there if you'd just give 'em a goddamn chance right now". "That's the way racing used to be, if you had the talent and preservation, you could get a shot at it. You can't now". Smokey hit it right on the head there, in all major sports, all these "best in the world" people are who they're telling you whose "best" ,as long as the keep people from competing all the champions and "worlds best" will be disputed! Chances are everyday people know, see, or are related to or acquainted with people who are more talented than major athletes, professional drivers, musicians, etc than those who they are telling you "is the best" or champion.
@tailwheel 1949..I always loved Smokey for the way he didn't hold anything back. His was the best book I've ever read! I too agree with Smokey about the France family. Laughed my ass off when I read the story about Smokey wiping his ass with a check Big Bill France sent him and Smokey told the courrior to send the check back to Big Bill.

I'd love to see Smokey in today's NASCAR. He'd still outsmart them all.

So true.
Smokey is exactly right it's all money it's not telling anymore you don't have no money you're not in a race car
His last comment is so true. Auto racing is the only professional sport in which having talent gaurantees you absolutely nothing.

What year was this interview filmed? Sounds like 1996, but I am not sure. Smokey saw Smoke for what he was...a current version of AJ Foyt
Hey RacingwithDO, this video is awesome and I'm interested in using this clip for a documentary about Smokey. Do you know where it came from?
When was this filmed? How ,uch had Tony already accomplished for ol Smokey to speak so highly of him?
Gotta have "persavation"!
