    I think you need to do all unboxing previews for Wizkids from now on, your format is soooo much better than the others with the wobbling of a mini in front of a badly focused webcam... :D
    Love that you did some comparisons for the giants. Yeah, they are definitely too small for me. The D&D 5E ones dwarf them, but the Cloud/Storm ones even look smaller than the old 3E WotC DDMs.
    Will definitely get an Aboleth, though it too is not that big as I expected. Will be curious to compare it with the Dangerous Delves one. The Chimera is a must have too. Nalfeshnee looks awesome, but being a Huge Rare, will cost a fortune. Though based on weight, should be easy to find by hand.
    The rest does not wow me much, as its too full of PF style Orcs and Goblinoids I do not care so much about in style. The new Kobolds are cute though, will pick up one of each.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, thank you! I think we'll be getting the future preview bricks from Wizkids, so there's more mini goodness coming. Yeah, those "trying to get the mini to focus with the camera" videos are what inspired us to make this channel.
      They are surprisingly short considering they have huge bases and come in the same sized boxed as Storm King's Thunder and MM3 (we checked).
      Yeah, I was hoping the aboleth would be a bit larger too, considering how dangerous it is. Yeah, that Boar Demon was far and away the heaviest box in this set.
      I'm quite happy with the set myself, especially since I'm just now getting into Pathfinder. :-) -Theo

    • @commanderbbshockwave8698
      @commanderbbshockwave8698 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGallantGoblin Ah so even the boxes are the same size, interesting. I remember some of the SKT giants came in several parts to fit in there. I prefer the 5E sizes as they are closer to the old 2E sizes, but I can understand that Pathfinder, being built on 3.5E, follows those scales. I just find it weird when a Hill Giant is basically the same size as an Ogre when they are actually far more powerful and strong.
      And thanks again for the great previews/reviews! Heh, indeed all those bad focus previews inspired you to become the mini-champion. :D

    I know you have to be easy on them, but WizKids wouldn't know quality if it slapped them up side their heads. It's rare that I see what I would consider quality from any of their minis. I'll have to stick to Reaper Bones and keep having a blast painting them myself. The eyes and vibrant colors on the rogue were mind blowing. Talk about crazy eyes in a clown suit. You put out great videos, and while I never care for the minis, I love the lore you give us.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thanks for commenting! This is Grady-I wanted to clarify that we don't really go easy on them from our perspective, and we try to stay independent in our opinions. We wouldn't have bought so many of their minis in the first place if we didn't like them or find them acceptable for our uses, but as Theo often says, we're not great painters (though I think he does a good job). Theo's position on reviews is to show the products and explain their uses and let viewers draw their own conclusions whether they think they're good for them or not. He's also naturally pretty easy-going, haha. If you watch my reviews you'll notice I tend to be a bit harsher at times, like in my conclusions about Monster Menagerie II. We're glad you like our work!

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Don, I'll just add that I consider the factory-painted minis to be a rather different thing than the Reaper minis. If I had the talent and drive to paint my own minis, I think I'd have a blast with them too. But at this point in my life, I really appreciate being able to take them right out of the box and place them on the table. But yeah, as Grady said, I'm not a harsh grader. And I have a different level of expectations for the two. I do have some Reaper minis that I want to possibly review at some point on the channel. Maybe over the holidays I can get some painting done! I appreciate your comment! -Theo

    Heh, no worries, I cannot pronounce Alghothullu either. It's I guess like Ch'tulhu? :D
    Pteranodon is a species of Pterosaurs, yes. They can be recognized by the backwards-sloping sharp crest. Probably one of the largest species in the order, after the Quetzalcouatlus. You pronounce it as Pteh-ran-oh-don. And agreed, love the Wight with the dead blackened skin, it's a must have. The Wraith not so much... how does an intangible spirit has a red cloak? • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grady here, just wanted to add a comment on the rares. There's a couple possible reasons to make a mini a rare. One is to make them very valuable--highly desired monsters may be made rares to encourage people to buy the booster boxes to "chase" them as well as maintain a healthy aftermarket. These are usually high level, iconic, and powerful monsters like liches, powerful demons, etc. For D&D this encompasses iconic creatures like beholders and mind flayers. In this set, it's actually surprising highly desired creatures like storm giants and aboleths are *not* rare, but it's a pleasant surprise. However, there are other reasons to make things rare that have nothing to do with perceived value. Some creatures you just wouldn't want a bunch of. Highly distinctive named NPCs, player character options, or rarer monsters like the orc warlord in this set are also candidates for rares because they are distinctive enough you probably wouldn't have multiple of them on the table at once.

    I liked this video very much! I, for one, preffer the D&D 3ed (and Pathfinder's) giant sizes. I have only one male Cloud giant and only one female Storm giant with those sizes, from the 2004 WoCTC "Giants of Legend" and now FIFTEEN years later I see these FEMALE cloud giant and a MALE Storm giant with the correct sizes (they created these for us, faifthful collectors). The Icons of the Realms giants are very cool but I have many rea$on$ not to by them and besdes, they don't match my other giants. This set is a miracle set!

    And another great review. Thanks for the video.
    The quality of Wizkids Minis really has improved. These look noticeably better then older Icons of the Realms.
    Most of the Minis also seem to fit really well with D&D. I don’t mind the different Designs. Some Pathfinder Monsters are so specific and have no match in D&D. These all have direct matches it seems.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, if you go back at look at older sets compared to these, there are a whole host of improvements in these recent sets.
      Indeed, I think the minis for D&D and Pathfinder are pretty interchangeable. And if there's a really cool mini in Pathfinder that doesn't have a corresponding stat block in D&D, it might be a fun exercise to adapt it to 5e yourself and introduce your own unique take on it. -Theo

  • @mikecy5507
    @mikecy5507 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I've been collecting D&D, Icons of the Realms, and Pathfinder minis for over a decade, and have about 2500 in my collection. I much prefer giants and huge creatures (demons, dragons, whatever) to not be so ludicrously large compared to your average human, so I'm loving these smaller giants. I only collect the figures, and don't use them for actual tabletop play, but IMHO, having to fight a 25-foot tall being (about 4 inches tall) should be challenge enough for any party of 4-5 adventurers. Making creatures/humanoids that approach 40 feet tall just seems comical to me. There's a reason they have very constrained weight classes in boxing and MMA that keep the contestants within about 5 pounds of each other. A 35-foot tall giant (~6 inches tall) could probably wipe out 20 humans, let alone a normal party of 4-5, without blinking an eye. Of course, you throw magic/spells/ranged weapons into the mix, and that makes it more interesting. The "giant" in Game of Thrones was about 12-15 feet tall, and even at that size was an incredibly destructive force without straining credulity.
    I've always wondered about the speed at which these huge creatures can move. Ever try swatting a fly with your bare hands? Seems a fairly consistent law of biology and physics that big things move more slowly than small things (in terms of body lengths moved per unit of time). The question is whether the small things can dart in and do any consequential damage to the big things, because all it takes is one hit from the big thing to squash the small thing. If these huge creatures move as fast as humans, that is just simply not fair. They'd be unbeatable.
    Anyhow, enough rambling. Really like the video - keep up the good work!

      One other comment I forgot. Without fail the last few years, whenever I receive minis from Icons or Pathfinder, they seem to look much better in person than what zoomed-in review videos show. Probably because my eyesight is not what it used to be, but viewed in normal lighting without a microscope, most of these minis look pretty darn good, in my estimation.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that perspective! I know you aren't not alone in those views. Many people prefer the giants that are more in proportion to the humanoids in the campaign setting. To answer your question about speed, in D&D a cloud giant for example has a movement speed of 40 ft per round versus 30 ft generally for humanoids. In Pathfinder 2e, the cloud giant has a movement speed of 30ft. Oftentimes they compensate for that by having the giant monsters have a lower AC due to their reduced dexterity and being generally easier to hit. In Pathfinder and D&D a cloud giant has dexterity of 10 (average). But, yes, I completely see where you're coming from and I appreciate the thoughts. I'm glad there's an audience for each type of giant mini. -Theo

      Yes, exactly right. We don't necessarily do the minis justice by zooming so close and lighting them up so much. We're going to look at our process and try to ensure that we're providing a detailed view without necessarily exaggerating any flaws the minis may have. We appreciate the feedback and we'll be working on that. -Theo

    Being new to the hobby, Theo, I realize you may be limited in what miniatures you own, but is there any way you could do size-comparison shots with the old 3rd edition D&D Mini's? Seeing the Fire Giant, Cloud Giant, and Storm Giant beside their Giants of Legend cohorts, as well as seeing the Nalfeshnee beside the Huge Nalfeshnee Tyrant from the Lords of Madness set would really help to put these in perspective, and may be the deciding factor as to if I buy a case or not.

      The Gallant Goblin I’ve been collecting and using minis for a long time. I’ve got every single miniature from the 3.0/4.0 Wizards of the Coast-produced sets starting with the Harbinger set (2003), up through the DDM4: Lords of Madness set (2010). I also have about a fourth of all the promos/variants they released, including some of the more interesting ones like the White Weretiger. I’ve got all the Gargantuan dragons, the Colossal red dragon, and Prince Orcus or whatever his name is. I’ve got every Pathfinder Battles miniature, from the Rise of the Runelords up through Legendary Adventures (well, as of the 16th of this month). I’m missing a few of the Kickstarter miniatures from the Emerald Spires campaign, but I do have most of the other Pathfinder promos. I’ve also got every Icons of the Realm set so far.
      I have my own channel where I started doing miniature reviews (as well as statue reviews), but I stopped a couple years ago because life and things got crazy busy here. My original plan was to do a bunch of comparison videos, crossing over sets from the old Wizard line, the Icons line, and the Pathfinder Battles line. Comparing all Green Dragons, for example, or all Fire Giants. I also wanted to do crossover collection videos, so things like all possible Animal Companions pre-painted miniatures, or all monsters that could be summoned with a Summon Monster spell. You get the idea.
      While I’m not interested in selling any of my collection, I’d consider letting you guys borrow them, perhaps by set or by miniature type or whatever, so that you could do set reviews of older sets from Wizards and early Pathfinder and comparison videos for any and all creatures. I feel like the possibilities are endless in that regard.
      I really dig what you have going here. Your setup is spectacular. The mini rotation is an obvious hit and screams “comparison video!!” But other things, like your lighting and sound are on point. Just as important, to me and others, the amount of information you give about the creatures is excellent. Truly. If you browse a couple of my miniature review videos, you’ll notice I always tried to provide a lot of information.
      Given the top-notch quality of your videos, your display setup, and the amount of information you provide, I can’t think of a better channel to whom I could lend my collection. And it would allow you to quickly and easily build up a large library of unique reviews and other content not seen anywhere else. All without shelling out a small fortune to track down everything you need.
      If you’re interested in my offer, let me know if you have a business email or something where I can reach out to discuss things in further detail.
      Also, I realize you aren’t overly familiar with Pathfinder. Even if you aren’t interested in borrowing miniatures from my collection to spotlight in your videos, I’ve collected a large amount of information for all the Pathfinder Battles sets (and the Icons sets). Information on where each creature’s stat block & description can found and the page where the artwork is for the miniature inspiration. I’ve also got information like alignment, creature type, CR/Challenge, and whether the creature can be used as an animal companion, familiar, summoned, wild shape/polymorph option. That last set of options is nice for a viewer to have to let them know if a miniature has increased versatility.
      Anyways, whether you are interested in the minis or not, the information I have on everything might still be useful to you to save you some time in looking everything up.

      Hey there! Oh, that sounds wonderful! Tracking down those older sets has been a pain for us, and we do get requests to showcase/review them pretty regularly. Feel free to reach out to us at thegallantgoblin at gmail. I have been wanting to do the same kind of videos, showing and comparing all of one type of creature across many lines. We're just waiting until we have a more complete set. The research you've collected sounds amazing too. Writing the Pathfinder scripts is a lot more work than writing the D&D ones. We're lucky to have a resource like Dndbeyond to help with the DnD research, but there's not really a comparable resource for Pathfinder. And all we have is the core rulebook for 2e. So yeah, thank you so much for the offer! Get in touch via email and we'll see what we can do. We certainly don't want to risk damaging any of your collection in transport. We'll see how far apart we are, etc. Thanks again! -Theo

    Since you asked - yeah we did have minis with notched arrows before. But mostly in the WotC era. Those used more soft, less rigid plastic, so they could do it - it is harder to do with the more rigid currently used plastic as tiny arrows would break easier. But there are a few that do have such poses, such as Artus Cimber from Tomb of Annhiliation: www.minisgallery.com/dnd/dnd10/dnd10_artuscimber.jpg - As for Dwarf Rogues, Larethar Gulgrin from MM1 is one example: www.minisgallery.com/dnd/dnd5/dnd5_larethar.jpg I too find this new Dwarf Rogue a bit odd, with the dark skin but blonde hair. The Dwarf Guard has that classic angular Dwarf armor I like so much in the LOTR movies or Dragon Age, definitely getting one.

      Jason Sternburgh This is probably true for anyone only looking for a few specific pieces. But if you’re a miniature collector with an itch to collect them all or a DM looking to build out your collection of minis to use at your table, blind boxes are a good idea. Though if that’s what you’re looking for, a case of blind boxes is the way to go.
      When you buy a case of Pathfinder Battles, you’re almost guaranteed to get a full set. They’re packed that way in the production process. You can find weekly previews of the miniatures on the Paizo website months before they hit store shelves, & those previews are reposted on pathfinderminis. com. In other words, they might come as blind boxes to anyone making an impulse buy with no additional information on hand, but for most people you already know what you’re getting.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Captain! That's a good point. They're really only semi-randomized in the box, and we've never gotten a case that didn't include one of everything (excluding invisibles).

    • @Captainpigraven
      @Captainpigraven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Gallant Goblin So many invisibles are one of my biggest pet peeves with Wizards for the Icons set. As are variant rare pieces, as it means you usually only get one of the two rare variants. When spending $300+ on a case, the last thing you want to do is track down even more pieces piecemeal.
      Pathfinder makes sure their cases have a good chance to have every piece in the set. They claim it isn’t a guarantee, but it is pretty rare to see someone miss out on one of them.
      I could do without the dungeon dressing, though. I only use Creatures/PC/NPCs at my table.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true! At least they *seem* to be moving away from invisibles, and we haven't seen rare variants in a while either. Yeah, I get the sense that if you don't get one of every mini in a case, then a mistake was made in the packaging. Some of the set dressing is pretty nice, like the dais, the gargoyle, the scarecrow, etc., but it seems like they're moving away from that too! -Theo

      Skilled miniature painters will generally be able to do a more detailed paint job than a factory-painted, mass produced set. For those of us who don't paint well or who prefer to buy table-ready minis, miniatures like these work well. Different audiences have different expectations. -Theo

    • @Captainpigraven
      @Captainpigraven 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Gallant Goblin Also, I’d imagine it is easier to be a skilled miniature painter when you can paint at your own pace, and without having to paint one part of one mini over and over and over again (likely with few breaks). Considering such conditions, I think the Icons & Battles lines are decent.
      Also, you can get a Pathfinder Battles subscription through the Paizo website. It gives 30% off a Battles case, which then unlocks the ability to buy the case incentive for 75% off. They also cover the first $10.00 in shipping.
      Here in the Northeast Ohio area, that’s usually a total of about $300.00 per case (including shipping) for any set without Huge-size miniatures. With 128 miniatures in a case, that’s $2.35 per miniature. Even the Legendary Adventures case, with a higher shipping cost due to increased size & weight, was still just $321.93, or $2.52 per miniature. That’s not too shabby at all.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว
