Cape Cod Canal 40 Pound Striper Insane Fight on Heavy Gear!

  • Out of all the different sized striped bass I’ve been lucky enough to connect with, I seem to find the ones that fight the hardest are those fish in the mid-high 30 pound to low 40 pound range. They are just full of piss and vinegar!
    Now a lot of the way a fight plays out is dictated by the current, how the fish is hooked, and often times this can be overlooked, but the orientation of the fish when it takes your plug. This fish took my Mike’s Custom Plugs Ditch Witch and was perfectly aimed down tide which resulted in some serious string pulling!
    As time has gone by, and I’ve gained confidence in all the different connections that keep me secured to a hooked fish, and as a result the more aggressively I fight them. Drag is usually in the 11-12 pound range on a setup like the one I’m using, and had I been running 6-7lbs which is probably the average at the canal this fish would have taken me for a RIDE. Also keep in mind this is no noodle stick!
    Setup:
    Rod: Custom built ODM Jigster Extreme 11’ 6-12oz
    Reel: Daiwa Saltiga 6500h w/ 50lb PowerPro Maxcuatro & 80lb Yo-Zuri Topknot
    Lure: Mike’s Custom Plugs Ditch Witch (Electric Blue head) rigged with BKK 200lb split rings and 6x VMC 7560 Sparkpoint Trebles in 3/0
    Waders: Dryft Primo Waders
    Footwear: Korker Darkhorse with Carbide studs
    Thanks for Watching Guys. The Canal Bag Series WILL continue after this season is over, and I'm glad I waited because its something that's always evolving.

    Hey Dan, Just wanted to say from one avid angler to another, that was absolutely textbook amazing work you put in with that 40 pound class fish. From the way you fought the fish, your drag setting, the way you handled the fish, and super cool you didn't boga the fish and jeopardize breaking her jaw or her neck. That fish was easily mid forties, but who cares what the exact weight was!!! She was massive! I hope other people that watch this video pay attention to these things. Super impressive and totally professional. Good on you brotha! ⚡️👊🏼⚡️

      SummitLifeTV thanks for the support brother. The one thing the canal has plenty of, is public parking access. Some spots are good because of bottom structure, but honestly I’ve caught fish at so many different random spots I honestly wouldn’t get too fussy with it. If you have a bike you can ride the paved service road that runs parallel to the canal the entire 7 miles on both sides. Any guy that fishes the canal seriously uses a bike rigged with baskets and rod holders to easily navigate the canal. Look up Cape Cod Canal bikes

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. Fishing the canal for well over a decade consistently, this was probably top 3 hardest fighting fish I’ve connected with, especially when considering the gear I’m using, 6x hooks, 200lb split rings, the drag I’m putting on it etc. it took the plug with its head facing down tide and just bent me over. If I was using a moderate action 2-6 oz plugging rod with 30-40lb braid and 50lb leader and not a 6-12 oz meat stick with heavy braid and what most would consider overkill 80lb leader (until they’ve had 50 and 60lb fluoro get shredded on the bottom multiple times and lose huge fish) that thing would have taken another 15-20 minutes to land.

    Dan I really enjoyed this vid and look forward to upcoming vids. Just wondered if you use any conventional gear or strictly spinning. Would love to hear you recommendation thx chris

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris filippi I don’t personally for the canal, but that’s not to say it’s not a viable method for fishing the canal whatsoever....especially jigging. My old man and many of the older, VERY skilled bottom fisherman all used conventionals with 20lb mono and all said that they just don’t have the same “control” with a spinning reel. Keep in mind they were using 3-6 oz buck tails and heavy diamond jigs/crippled herring etc and I remember my dad would constantly free spool over ledges and drop his bucktail into holes throughout a drift, and said he’d just never be able to replicate that control on spin. Can’t teach an old dog new tricks I guess! He said the mono would help float those type of lures whereas these days we’ve got braid which slices right through the water and provides no buoyancy.....and because we got spoiled by the invention of paddle tail jigs that damn near swim themselves!

    Hey not sure if you would give me any tips. Im from California, Morro Bay and i just figured out that there are stripers here in the surf. I have only caught them on one lure that i have tried. Its like a medium diving flash minnow made by lucky craft. i want to try to catch the stripers on a different lure. What would you recommend trying out for shallow depth surf casting. The wave sets are pretty close together. If you dont mind sharing advice i would really appreciate the help. Keep in mind i usually return the fish unless i get the itch to have fish for dinner which is not often. I just like to go enjoy catching the fish and like the idea of letting them go to make more fish that will hopefully return in the future.

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok well I have a few questions....
      -Do you think the ability to cast out further would provide you the chance to present a lure in deeper water where fish may be holding? I think a lure like a super strike littleneck popper that’s proven itself over the years in the surf and with its amazing distance would be a great pitch to throw.
      -Do you have any “sweep” or side current where you fish? Lures like Darters are excellent surf lures but work best with a little side current aiding their action
      -Some of the best lipped diving lures are lures like the Daiwa SP Minnow, or Shimano Coltsniper with the weight transfer system.
      -Spooks are one of the funnest ways to catch fish. Companies like Gibbs, Heddon, musky mania, and yo-Zuri all offer them
      -Metal lips like a small Gibbs Danny Plug are and awesome way to catch fish in the surf given the right circumstances.
      ***Check out the channel Surfcasters Journal. Lately they’ve been putting out some incredible content for beginners and really breaking down lure types and choices, as well as the time, place, and conditions in which to use them!!

      Morty Ditchtroll The original jigster is still my all around favorite canal rod. As you can see in this video, while the extreme is unbelievably powerful, the original would soak up a lot more of the power and load that this unusually hard fighting fish put out. There’s not a striper on the planet that the regular model jigster couldn’t whoop with the right angler behind it. I’ve owned everything up to a 12’ 2-8 oz $1200 Century Surf Machine Elite and I still would take the jigster over it. Hope you enjoy the rod man!

    What’s your opinion on # for the braid down in the cape? Wasn’t sure for what to get this summer was looking at minimum #30 braid and a #60-#80 leader. #60 if there isn’t any bluefish around.

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flip really depends on where you’re fishing....open beach 20-30lb braid with 40-50lb leader....canal most guys run 40 or 50lb for their all around setups throwing plugs with 50-60lb leader. For jigging I run either 50 or 65lb braid and 80-100lb 4 ft leader. Rule of thumb for me for plugging is to always run a leader that’s at least 20lb test higher than mainline for distance and straightening out the plug. I also use pretty long leaders, longer than most people for sure

    • @flip8910
      @flip8910 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Evan Fishing when I began fishing at the canal I was very misinformed.. got 5oz+ lures and #25 braid... 10’ rod with a 8k reel combo.. things heavy as hell... snapped does lures left and right lmao..
      I’ve researched way more and just looking at what people’s opinions are for what my setup should be this year. Going for a budget combo of a Star paraflex with a Bg 5k.i feel like #80 is al around good and anything over 100 might be overkill. What type of knots do you connect the Clip to the leader and mono? And you put a clip on it or tie straight into the plug

    How are you liking that Maxcuatro line? I’m looking into that or PPv2 for my canal jigging set up. I notice your videos typically feature top water. Would you use the maxcuatro for jigging the bottom there? Great content btw. I look forward to more this year. I’m also very interested in the plugs you build.

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles C Hey man. I really like maxcuatro on any setup that I’m throwing plugs on. If that’s a crossover setup like the one in the video for example that sees some jigging but isn’t a dedicated jig stick Maxcuatro 50lb with 60-80lb leader is my go-to. You get the diameter of 40lb braid which makes the 50 feel light. I personally don’t like V2 for the jigging the canal or any softer 8 carrier braid. That being said I know guys that use it with great success it’s just a personal choice for me. I like those “ropier” feeling gnarly braids like regular powerpro, the main reason being the canal bottom is a graveyard of shit waiting to pop your line (combined with big fish and big current). I actually jig the canal way more than I throw plugs, 90% of that is at night though so videos a no go. The only downside of maxcuatro is the price. But 50lb max with 40” 80lb leader will do well jigging.

      Charles C if you have Instagram you can find my work @maelstromlures. The thing with my Lures unlike a lot of the stuff being released these days is that anything I put my name on and hand to another fisherman with the confidence to know it will work requires years of prototyping and tweaking. My personality is just not geared towards cutting corners. I’m glad you found the jigster man. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to build the blank and really put it through its paces and I loved it so much I had to make a video about it. Glad it’s been good to you. Robin Andretta Robin if the primo jacket is a FRACTION of the quality of the Primo Waders it’s going to be incredible. I even emailed Dryft and told them how massive of a hit their Session pants would be at the canal! The pants and/or jacket is definitely next on the list. If you look at the specs of the Simms G4Z which retail for $800 and then look at the Dryft Primos for $350 (they’re on sale!), tell me that the Primos don’t have every feature and then some....and they look way cooler haha...I think it would be a fucking bloody great investment man.

    That will be my next setup rod for jigging jigster x is beast

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TRDBoomer its an absolute fuck truck of a rod. Some of the 1209 style guys complained about the rod being too soft and I think ODM answered. We placed the rod at 45 degrees in a jig at Redtop and used a drag scale and even at 50 pounds the rod was good for so much more. The owner of ODM said they tested it to over 80 pounds but labeled the rod conservatively at 35 pounds lol....no other surf rod has a max drag rating like that. And beyond that, this thing can cast anything from a 3 oz pencil to a 10 oz Savage cutbait an absolute mile and has the tip to lift those heavy jigs and hold them off the bottom effortlessly.

      Space Cowboy go to NJTackle’s website and go to plug building supplies. You’ll see the choice between pre-bent (nose loop) 304 stainless. I prefer the hard wire over the annealed.

  • @rilfann1
    @rilfann1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick question Dan , what's the difference between the regular jigster and the extereme version and which one do you think is better for the canal , I'm looking to buy one but there's no tackle stores that have one on hand for me to judge

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So they both serve a purpose at the canal and it’s tough to compare them against each other because it depends on the application. If you’re looking for an all around rod to throw everything from pencils, SPs, swimmers and doing some lighter jigging go for the jigster all day. If you’re looking for a dedicated jig stick the extreme is exactly that. It’s too heavy to plug with for extended periods and the only reason I’m using it in this video is because I was throwing jigs and just snapped a pencil on real quick. The original jigster is a better fish fighting rod and doesn’t beat you up so much because it’s softer but still has the bottom end sack. I’ve tried plugging for 3 hours with the extreme and I felt like I got my ass kicked. The extreme is a jigging machine and throws heavy stick shadds and magic swimmers a mile.

    • @rilfann1
      @rilfann1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks or the reply Dan , in looking at your videos with the original jigster , I was wondering if it was too soft , I already have a tfo 11ft 3 to 8 also a St Croix Avid Surf 11ft 3 to 8oz but I heard the jigster was a really good rod also but I didn't know which one to get . I also heard about Black Hole makes a good rod too for the canal , but like you I don't want a rod to beat me up either

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen G Riley So are you looking to replace the rods you mentioned or for something to add to your current setups to compliment them? How many rods do you fish at the canal when you go?

    • @rilfann1
      @rilfann1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No those are keepers for the canal I'm looking to replace the new Lamiglas Canal Rod I just picked up , that rod is a little heavier than the tfo and St Croix , plus to be honest I always liked the odm jigster. Just trying to keep it light as possible . The reels I have are the 14k Stella , 6500 Diawa Saltist Ltd (which is huge at 29 oz) also to finish it out a Penn Slammer 3 6500 High Speed . I plan to throw the basic Canal fare , magic swimmers , Stick shads , large pencils , savage eels and al gags all those from 3 to 5 oz .

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen G Riley If you want the best all around stick that’s a jack of all trades, pair an original jigster with the 14k Stella. They were made for each other. The Extreme is really just a one trick pony rated 6-12 oz. It really beats the shit out of me plugging and I’m a pretty big guy. For me personally the original jigster does everything perfect for me unless I’m bouncing 5-6 oz bucktails in which case I’ll use something shorter, faster, and heavier like the black hole heavy II.....for every other lure you mentioned the Jigster was made to throw.

      z z and that’s absolutely your right to do so sir. I’ll never be one of those people who add to the polarization of today’s society by trying to tell you that you HAVE to release fish. It’s simply the way I fish, and what I try to advocate for.....but if a fisherman gets out there, works hard, and wants to keep a fish for the table within the limits of the laws we have set in place, then by all means enjoy your dinner! Good luck with that keeper!

    Have you tried cotton cordell redfin?

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Morgan of course, it’s a staple from the surf, but in the canal for diving minnows, the Shimano colt sniper 170 is my go-to due to the fact that it’s fully through-wired and has big hook hangers to handle big split rings. I also use the 15 & 17 size SP minnow but am more reluctant to put a ton of pressure on a big fish due to the hook hangers being pulled. There’s a guy on Instagram who goes by the name Redingfin and he does so really awesome work. He takes lures like Redfins, bombers, SP minnows etc., and cuts them open, through wires them, and then puts swivels in the belly. Those I would fish in the canal all day with confidence

      For the canal? Honestly just anything that’s not super high viz….moss green, white, powerpro light blue etc….I fish longer leaders than most so line color isn’t nearly as important as the line itself, and its characteristics.

      Airborne Fishing thank you for the kind words man. I make lures at the hobbyist level. I do have a lure page on Instagram if you want to check them out (@maelstromlures) - Unfortunately I’m not at a point where I sell them yet. I believe that prototyping, constantly tweaking things, and a ton of real world testing over the long term is critical.,..especially if you’re going to put your name and reputation on something and hand it to another fisherman. Some day I’m sure I will

    • @vinhdoan2413
      @vinhdoan2413 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huechee Moua the blank is purple. You shouldn’t let the color sway you away from building this rod. I personally built mine last winter and it’s a very versatile rod, can pretty much do it all.

    • @vinhdoan2413
      @vinhdoan2413 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huechee Moua Dan is more knowledgeable on this question since he has used both before. It all comes down to what your primary use for this rod is going to be. Is this an all around rod? Are you going to use this mainly for jigging? I have the standard 11ft and I use it to throw topwater and jig, and I love it. I think if you go with the extreme, you lose a little distance with topwater when you throw plugs in the 2.5-4 oz range.

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huechee Moua as stated, only the first few prototype blanks were blue, the rest purple....trust me it grows on you. If you’re looking for the best all around canal rod, get the original Jigster 4-10 in 11’....if you want a rod that’s more or a heavy jig stick, get the extreme. If I were you I’d get the original

      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BGJ410
      @BGJ410 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk not to be a dick but you got 40lb braid why if it’s just 12lb drag? I know you know what your doing but 95% don’t and if they do what your doing they’re gonna hold everyone up for longer than necessary plus better for fish..

    • @BGJ410
      @BGJ410 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn’t do that but you know as well as I do most will let it drag sometimes 100+ yards on a little ass fish.. 1st cause they’re assholes 2nd out there with the wrong everything

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tito James If you feel what 12 pounds of drag feels like translated through a surf rod, with an actual drag scale, that’s a ton of drag for canal fishing, and would yank a lot of guys right off the rocks. I bet 90% of the fisherman, even good ones don’t run doubt digit drag. And there’s much more to consider, like if you go overboard with drag you’re going to open up a massive hole in the fish’s mouth, resulting in possibly dropping the fish, or worse, fatally wounding it by destroying their jaw....and once you get to say 15 pounds you start to really tax the terminal tackle if there’s any binding. I fight fish fairly aggressively and only posted this video because of how hard this particular fish fought. It was certainly unique in that regard.

  • @jeffknowles3952
    @jeffknowles3952 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Perfect release. Everbody should take note on what he is wearing, how long he fought the fish and how he was wearing wader boots so he can leave the bass in the water.
    If your an idiot that shows up in shorts and sneaker, under sized gear and hoists the fish up on the rocks, GO HOME!

    • @DanEvan
      @DanEvan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeff Knowles I always tell people there’s 4 main reasons I wear waders at the canal.
      1) To get off the rocks and onto the the sediment bottom for better footing
      2) To be able to handle the fish in the water
      3) To provide a better angle when fighting the fish when they run down the rocks
      4) To allow a full back cast for more distance
