Thanks, MM, for driving through my original hometown; was there until age 7, lived all over town. The last place we lived was on east 4th Street right across from about where that kid screamed out. That house is gone now, as is my first school, Edgemoor Elementary...

Ty so much for this. I live in Delaware but way south now. I spent much of my early 20s working in Banking. It was so nice to see where I use to park & then walk across to the bldg I use to work at. So much vacancy now.

I was born in the now tore down Wilmington General Hospital in 70. Grew up going to Canby Pool. Played at Canby Park, walked to Indian Rocks, swam. In my teens, my Bestie’s dad owned Joe’s News. We would walk her dog from there to her granparents on Read Street. Can’t do ANY of that now. I used to drive a school bus all over Wilmington and Riverside. Couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do it now. Wilmington is a slum. Nothing good about it any more no matter how many designer bandaids they try to put on it.

I'd have to agree with you. Also the people all look unhappy and miserable. I worked as a rideshare driver, picking up strangers in the murder capital late at night.
You couldn't have a conversation with these people. They would respond with one word answers, not say anything, and not understand any jokes I would try to make. I hated it.
My best customers were from out of town. They were more interesting, nicer, and more fun to talk to.
I just had a family reunion there August 6th ok.
But we had a hotel stay in Newark.
Boy did I wish I had a tour driver.
Because that's what I was looking for.
Streets, roads not the highway or interstate driving.
That got on my nerves bad.
I enjoyed my visit, seeing my family.
My Mom, Aunts and my Uncle grew up in Wilmington but my first time there as an adult.
Christiana Mall was too big. We enjoyed ourselves tho.
I just wanted to go, hang out tho.

This is the better area Wilmington for the most part. It is way too dangerous to just drive around willy nilly. You can be in an amazing Million dollar housing area and 3 streets over is a slum druggy area.

Anyone have pictures of old Tatnall Street before the new Brandywine Building made it a plaza in the 60s?? My dad had an art studio with Jack Armbruster and Clarence Lynch, I remember as a child, before needing to move around the block to the creaky corner at 10th and Orange (still standing!) to make more room for the Dupont empire. Wilmington was losing its small city charm already by 1970. The Dry Goods would soon follow.

Joe doesn't live in the city. Joe lives in the very private area we call Chateau Country which is filled with duPont family estates. It's beautiful over there. Managed forests and no place to pull your car over and take in any beauty. It's a definite example of us and them where Joe lives on his private lake..
