Kind of The Oscar Peterson of the guitar. He can charge like a lion or land like a butterfly with a broken wing. You can usually tell when it's Martin playing. He has a style. Saw him this year at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Small, intimate room, and he was just marvelous. Left his performance and went immediately to see his good friend Tommy Emmanuel play to a huge crowd outdoors. A magical night of guitar!
When you come back to this after listening to it 5 years ago, and its still the best around, you know you’re listening to pure genius. But with an axe of a name like Martin and Taylor, guess we should expect this 😀 Awesome gentleman he is 🌈
Last night we saw Martin perform in Buffalo, NY. Absolutely fabulous. He is an incredible guitar man. In the '80s, we saw him, I think, playing with Steffan Grappelli. We saw Steffan three times at the Tralf in Buffalo, and Martin was a member of Steffan's group for eleven years or so, including the 80's. Both fabulous musicians.
One of the best guitar pieces I've ever heard. This is why we endure bad notes, eye-rolling and bleeding fingers for all these years. True achievement.
Thanks phillynn, that's true and I found there's no shortcuts that I'm aware of.Everytime I've played something that people told me "oh that was great", was worked out and practiced over and over in "the woodshed",for many many hours, over many days.I asked my uncle and teacher,Howard Morgen when am I going to feel comfortable with this process? He said you won't feel comfortable, but you'll be able to clearly see the price you're paying always has good results.Like you said ,"true achievement".
Living in Scotland as he does I'm lucky enough to have heard Martin play live many times and will never get tired of listening. For me, no other player past or present can pack so much magic into a standard as Martin. Every time I listen I marvel at something new. Its not hurried its not over egged and the execution is flawless. Speaking as a wood be guitar player myself.....God it makes me sick
Saw him solo in Norwich a few years ago one of the very few guitarists who Ive ever seen prepared to push himself right to his limits . A great show what a player!
Great! Great tone. Great bass lines. Great bass sound. I'v seen Martin live and he's superb. Just a guitar, amp and a stool, no effects, oh and some genius.
one of his classics, masterful pianistic phrasing .He's original cos he doesn't just live in guitar culture,he's absorbed the great bands and their arrangers
My jaw was on the floor the whole time! truly! MT has the calm/technical and tommy has the wild/technical! they both have virtuoso skills but in slightly different style fields i guess, but brought together in a stylish mix..... well, you saw! i have never, and will probably never see anything like that again!! still haven't got over it!
It's good. I saw Martin Taylor with Stephane Grappelli back around 1981, and it was obvious then that this was a guitarist to watch. He has a lovely lyrical feel for his instrument. Nice post -- thanks. Georgia isn't a complicated song from the point of chord structure, but songs like that make can the best jazz.
This arrangement is probably the most moving one I know...It really touches me deep inside. Martin Taylor is a great jazz guitarist. Thanks for post it...
I think talking about the best guitar player in the world is nonsense. There are such great artists who have so much to give us only a fool wouldl think of naming only one as worth listening. This man is a great artist and knows the guitar. Let's listen to him with awe and respect.
I frequently play in this style of solo jazz guitar, and I must say--this is quite stunning. Beautifully played, nice nods to blues and country pickin, while still remaining true to jazz tradition. Sweet.
Hoagy Carmichael wrote this in 1930, and played it with his orchestra. The original was one of Bix Beiderbecke's last sessions. The first actual "hit" was by band leader, Frankie Trumbauer, who suggested that Carmichael write the tune in the first place.
I saw Martin play this tune just yesterday in Middletown, NJ...his final song of the afternoon...brilliant...moving...mesmorizing. What a performance!!!
Far and away the best of the jazz solo fingerstyle guitar players, alongside Joe Pass. Smooth effortless flow of simultaneous multiple guitar parts, played with superb taste, and great natural feel. Though he possesses unsurpassed virtuosic ability, he never resorts to showing off meerly for the sake of showing off. It's always about being musical.
WOW! What an outstanding artist! Such a great feel! Brilliant playing! Discovered this guy just this morning, but not many players have had such a great first impression on me
His right hand is so fluid and relaxed. It really contrasts the complexity of his left hand, and makes the whole thing so much simpler than it really is.
Certainly one of the best guitar arrangements of this classic tune that I've ever heard. Wonderfully played. He kinda looks like a much more serious/much less frenetic version of comedian Bill Bailey...
Absolutely Beautiful...first guess when I heard this was Joe Pass (a friend played it to me blind) - you want to know how to play this? - practice, practice, and then when you have some spare time practice some more...there's no magic trick, just dedication. Martin, you're an inspiration to young players, a wonderful example of what can be achieved if you care enough about your playing. As I said to start with, Absolutely Beautiful.
I went to the exeter one, sat near the front on the left, good seats! we would've hung about to get a glimpse of the pair, but my mate hadn't had to get back :( that'd be cool to see your videos of the night, keep me posted. need to show my uncle who couldn't make it!! (he was guuuuutted!!)
Looks like his signature 'Artistry' guitar made by Vanden. Costs around 6950 GB Pounds, not sure about the xchange rate if you're from the US, as it's a UK manufacture.
I believe Martin is playing on a Yamaha AEX 1500 type without the piezio , About the comments , there is someone always comparing musicians to others ...when are you going to get it man... stop comparing and enjoy his talent and accent the positive. Calgary Dave
This is fantastic. This man has a wonderful interpretation of this song. Classic Jazz! For another wonderful version, check out Jerry Reed's answer to this song here on youtube.
THE consumate guitarist of taste and unobtrusive genius. He is the very best in the world at the moment. Nobody has ears like Martin. M

Well I haven't heard this in years. Tranquil, skillful, and home.
A pinnacle of solo jazz guitar performance. Been a big fan of Martin since the early 80's.

I got to see/hear him at Jazz Alley in Seattle..lucky,lucky me

An enchanting example of technical mastery in the service of sensitive and soulful musicality. It doesn't get much better than this.
Very well said...
and played
어쩜 이렇게 멋지게 편곡하여 완벽하게 연주할 수 있을까요?
In assoluto la migliore versione di Georgia che io conosca. Bella!
Simply sensational!
This ginger has got SOUL

laurent.
Saw him solo in Norwich a few years ago one of the very few guitarists who Ive ever seen prepared to push himself right to his limits . A great show what a player!
Incredibile!!!! Troppo bello questo arrangiamento.Martin ti adoro !!!
You are right in all respects. This is the ideal towards which any guitarist should strive. Perfect!
I never get tired of listen to

Hooray! Someone who can play with technical ease AND swing, all by himself. Fabulous.

Roba da paura... Assolutamente unico!
Absolutely wonderful...! *_*
THIS is music...
I work in sheltered housing in scotland, his mum advised me to check out some of his stuff. Loving it
Amacing... I love that so much, thank you Martin!
Martin Taylor... best name for an acoustic guitarist
This is pure class from the arrangement to the execution
It's like he was born with becoming an amazing guitarist in mind.
Un cerebro en cada dedo!!!! Increíble, hermosa versión!!
he plays with such ease
Absolutely beautiful
Amazing! Absolutely fantastic!
His right hand is so fluid and relaxed. It really contrasts the complexity of his left hand, and makes the whole thing so much simpler than it really is.
fantastic playing
So natural and beautiful
His playing on this song really has a New York Jazz feel and accent!
Certainly one of the best guitar arrangements of this classic tune that I've ever heard. Wonderfully played.

my head just exploded.
He's CLASS!

It's this and Lenny Breau's trio version. The best of the best. Thank you Martin

Looks like his signature 'Artistry' guitar made by Vanden. Costs around 6950 GB Pounds, not sure about the xchange rate if you're from the US, as it's a UK manufacture.
Realy Realy nice!
yeah, I'll be working on this for a few more years....great player...great arrangement
See the song history below. Ray Charles, like Willie Nelson, both covered this tune, which was written before they were born.
I believe Martin is playing on a Yamaha AEX 1500 type without the piezio , About the comments , there is someone always comparing musicians to others ...when are you going to get it man... stop comparing and enjoy his talent and accent the positive.
Calgary Dave
