    In adore your ackies, and they look like they have so much fun, and are well enriched and cared for! This is a species I hope to have a few of on the far future, when I can afford to care for them, and have more experience with the reptiles I already own.

      Ackies were one of my very first species and they are my favorites. If you have the means to buy the animals and enclosure it is really not much to take care of them. They are hardy and easy to keep. You will have a lot of fun keeping yours for sure! :)

      @@projectpet7828 I've heard 4x2x2 is the bare minimum and they need closer to a 5x3x3.. some even say 2 ft of substrate.. is that overboard tho? I figured 3 ft tall with a foot or less of substrate would be fine.

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ReaperNola Obviously the bigger the better for an adult but I believe a 4x2x2 will be perfect for a single or a pair. About the substrate: What you read about the deep substrate is true. They are burrowing animals and they will dig holes and tunnels if you provide a nice layer of substrate, however 1 foot will be fine too if you provide plenty of hides for them to retreat when they feel like.

    Awesome video! I agree with all the other comments about the exceptional editing!!!
    I think it's funny that you (in Europe) call them 'Ackie' monitors, here, in Australia, we call them 'Ridgetail' monitors!!
    I'd never heard them called an 'ackie' monitor until I saw your other video in which you mention them, and I thought "WTF is an Ackie - is there a monitor I hadn't heard of??", so I checked your site and found this video and realised it was the Ridgie!!!

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha indeed. Actually they have 4-5 different names and I was like "which one should I use".... Funny thing is that since Crittacam refers to them as Ackies on occasions too I've thought I use that name as well. "Ackies" sounded like an Australian name/word and since they origin from there I was like OK I go for this one :) Is it only me or Ackies sound more Australian than the other names? :DD Also would like to say that I am happy that you liked my editing, I will try to keep or raise this level in the future to make these video more interesting for you guys!

    • @asyoz
      @asyoz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I admit, Ackies does sound like something we'd call them! :D It is far more Aussie sounding than 'Ridgetails'. I did wonder, when I heard 'ackie', whether it was Acanthurus. I've subscribed, looking forward to more content from you!
      Oh, one very small piece of "constructive criticism", with regard to your thumbnails. I think it might look better if you do the three lines of text like this:
      HOW TO
      CARE FOR
      TILIQUA
      (as an example)
      The first time I saw that thumbnail I read it as "How Tiliqua to care" and had to stop and say "WTF?"
      It took me a second to work out that the 'how to care' was diagonal.
      It's nothing, really, but I think it might help people who maybe have English as a second language, or children, to understand the title better. :)
      Another alternative might be:
      BASIC CARE:
      TILIQUA
      (Blue tongues)
      :)

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah I totally get what you are saying about the thumbnail. What I tried to do is writing the "How to care" with white and the animal the video is about went with another color but I can see that it can be confusing. Good input, thank you for telling me, I will definitely change the text on future thumbnails.

      I think he said if it gets too high they could have respiratory infection too low they could have intestinal problems because their body is in at a proper temperature to where they can digest their food so basking spots with multiple temperature gauges is necessary to maintain these reptiles.

    What I've always wondered, is if you could go without the calcium supplements for reptiles if you just managed to balance their diet the way it is in the wild. I've never known someone to not use the supplements so it just makes me wonder why that is. It would just make sense to me that if you gave them the exact same foods and stuff that they wouldn't need supplements.

      Hi Ovi! Well I'm not going to lie to you when they poop it smells really bad which is true for every reptile but especially true for insectivores. What I would suggest is to keep them on bioactive substrate which helps to maintain a clean enclosure without smells if you can't spot-clean everything immediately. If the cage is clean there is no smell whatsoever.

    Very good editing, probably one of the best care videos i have ever seen (y) And i have a question, i read that it is dangerous to introduce adult monitor to another, could it work? Or is it best to buy 2 juveniles from the same clutch?

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Martin! Thank you very much for your comment, I am glad you liked my work :) About your question: Introducing two adult animals can be very tricky but it's not something that hasn't been done before :) I am about to do the same with my adult savannah monitors but the male is still in quarantine. So ... first I write what would be the best to do but I understand this technique is not possible for everybody due to the requirements of space and other means. This would be to have a huge enclosure which is divided by a strong metal screen. This way the animals can introduce themselves to each other without the possibility to harm one another. If you can do this I would advice a minimum of 2 months period in which you can observe your reptiles. Once this period ends, you can put the animals together. Before I go into the how to-s I would like to mention that you should be sure that both animals are completely parasite/infection free since with breeding those cam be transmitted from one animal to another. Putting two monitors together is not an easy thing therefore I suggest you to have someone else assisting you on it. If something happens (aggression from one or both sides) you will have someone to jump and help. What I will do is I will place both my animals to the ground in my room. Like this there is enough open space and chances for getting yourself injured is lower. Handling 2 monitors in the terrarium something I wouldn't do above a size. Introducing them to each other at a neutral space will kill most territorial aggression from your male and he will be more like to be more gentle at a new place. On the other hand if your male is a bit more shy that he should be the best practice could be to actually do place the female into his enclosure, like that his confidence level will stay high. What I also would do is (hibernate/brumate) my animals since the end of those periods usually means the start of the breeding season for many species. When you end this period, you should try the introducing process and probably will get better results. If you want to breed your reptiles and want to raise babies I would say try to find two reputable breeders and buy 1 from each. Inbreeding has to be very deep to cause problems but if you want to release your animals to the market best to have pure babies to sell. I hope I could help, if you have anything else to ask, feel free and I will answer.

      Hi Kyle! Since as you said your ackie is eating well and seems to be healthy I wouldn't be worried yet. However I would like to ask what do you feed your ackie with? What is his/her main diet? Maybe your monitor needs a more nutritious diet but first I would like to know what you offer. Also the very first thing I though about is parasites. If an animal is eating well or even great but not putting on size in young age can be caused by parasitic infection but that would cause other symptoms like skinniness etc. As I said if your ackie seems to be healthy don't start to worry immediately :)

I noticed once that the sand I bought had little pebbles in it which the Ackies ate intentionally. They just picked them up and which they could swallow they ate. I would advice buy sand which is totally fine and does not contain little pieces of rocks/pebbles.

      If you are just getting into the world of monitors I would say stick to your initial plan with the ackies and see how it goes for you. They are very easy to keep, friendly and interactive so you'll see fast if monitors are your thing or not. Besides them I would recommend Kimberley rock monitor but they are a bit harder to keep, have more special needs and the are more expensive. There are obviously other choices, smaller bigger species but you just can't go wrong with an ackie for a start.

      A huge enclosure like that can easily house 5-6 Ackies. If there are multiple hides/basking spots/water blowls maybe you can house 2 males in the same enclosure. Housing multiple males can be tricky, if you raise them together that is better. Sorry for the panoptes :( I love those monitors, that was my very first species I kept.

      Hi Maxime! Well first of all you don't have to do it at all if you don't want to. Ackies are perfectly fine without the winter/rest-period, but if you want to trigger their breeding behavior it is indeed good to offer them a month or two rest. Usually I have my lights on 12 hours a day for them, which I decrease to 3 over 3 weeks. First week of change I let the lights on for 9 hours, the next week 6 and on the 3rd week I have them on for only 3 and that I keep for 2 months. In the end of the period I raise the hours back to 12 in the same manner. When the hours decrease to 3 I don't offer food anymore which they get again once I let the lights on for 6 hours the first time again. Clean water should be offered all the time as normally. I hope I could help :)

      @@maximemourens9328 That is what I'm doing when I don't want to focus on getting them to breed. The only time I change the lighting is for adjusting the heat for the summer/winter period but that only means applying a smaller watt bulb(s) in summer so the heat output is not that high. If you want to just keep your ackies there is no need for resting your lizards. One thing I would mention tho: Giving your animal a rest period is not a bad thing (even you don't want to breed them) but without it they will be perfectly fine too, they still breed most of the time but this particular period really helps getting fertile eggs and drives my males into breeding.

      All my tanks are custom made, so you have to find a company that does them with you giving the dimensions.

    Can you keep them just on a super worm diet?

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely NOT! Super worm is high on citin and lacking essentials your monitors need. For me super worm is a filler when I don't have any better to give.

    From 1-10 how good a pet is the ackie?

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On a scale from 1 to 10 as a pet it's 6 as a reptile it's 10 in my opinion.

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes 50-60 celsius is perfect for an adult with the possibility for them to choose how close they want to get to the center/hottest point. You can provide them really hot basking area and let them decide what they need.

      @@projectpet7828 ok, thanks! That's REALLY hot tho wow! Do you think they make good pets for a beginner? I've wanted a reptile my whole life and been fascinated by them ever since I was a child, I might get one and I absolutely LOVE ackie monitors

    • @projectpet7828
      @projectpet7828  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oogway9895 Yea it's really hot but don't forget that we are talking about an Australian species. Young ackies should have lower temperatures for basking spot of course. I think they are perfect for beginners, they are easy to keep, hardy, simple to feed and not dangerous at all because of their size and chilled temper. They are also very interesting to watch cause they are very curious and inquisitive animals.

    the size of the tanks you tell is way too small. these are very active day-animals that need space to climbe, hide and dig.
