  • In this 2nd episode of Forging with Jess, I'm learning blacksmith hammer technique. As a complete newbie, I struggle with the how to move metal blacksmithing. I need to dial in my hammer technique for forging. As I start, it quickly becomes visible that my hammer technique in forging is not efficient. Roy gives me some blacksmithing techniques tips that hopefully will help me with how to move metal efficiently!

Just getting started blacksmithing, came across your channel when I was looking for reviews on the 66 pound acciaio anvil. Your videos are very much appreciated, I'm watching a bunch of yours to learn correct techniques and stuff. Really great videos, thanks so much!

Thank you jess and roy for providing this information im going to have to re train in my hammer technique as i have blacksmith's elbow i have tried this technique without a hammer and i found that i had less pain in my arm so I'll need to slow my forging down and correct my hammering as to try to prevent more damage and hopefully my elbow will improve over time

Great tips...I have been trying to make a conscious effort to let the hammer pivot in my hand and it is amazing how much easier it is to hammer that way!

Great teaching tips. The block of wood was good too. We get young teens come to our guild/club shop to start lessons and cannot hit a wall. Our main instructor sends them home to drive nails in boards for a long time before coming back. We have people on waiting lists so it is hard to take so much time teaching someone to hit whatever they aim at much less all the blacksmithing techniques.

Move the material, not the hammer! A great tip, I will use that starting tomorrow!

It's really interesting watching someone who is clearly a gentle person learning how to apply what is essentially a violent force. Well done Jess. I have been making the same errors, and now I know where how to address them. In the morning I am going to fire up my forge and employ what you guys have shown me. Thanks and God bless.

Good video for beginners there, Jess’s form got a lot better there at the end. You could tell that the anvil was slightly too high for her, I’m glad you addressed that. I did notice that your suggested grip is different, but similar, to mine. I end up holding loosely with my index and middle finger but control with my ring and pinky based on where the swell is in my handle. It does create a hot spot on the heel of my hand but it lengthens the “whip” of the hammer by pushing the fulcrum out more.
