Considering how crazy this story is, I can't believe how few of my fellow psychologists have ever heard of Henry Cotton and his horrible surgeries and theories. Two years after making this video, I am still bringing it up to new people, and they're usually shocked by the state of 1920s American psychiatry. I'm really fun at parties.

Excellent video. I really like the way you have told the story and added you're own take rather than just rehashing wikipedia as soon people do. It is a fascinating subject that deserves to be better known. My own view is that Dr Cotton was not mad but probably had a narcissistic personality disorder.

It's sickening what people can justify covering up or explaining away in order to protect their friends and colleagues. One of the reasons organisations like the Cochrane Collaboration are so important: the ability to see past to flaws of any one study, and judge the merit of a treatment solely on its proven effectiveness.

Yes it is a messed up story, which is why people in the field of psychiatry that I have asked about it have never been taught about it, unfortunately. The world would rather forget it instead of learn from it.
