    Nice vid John, as always. I'm just a DIY guy when it comes to backyard water features, but I do work in stream restoration and have a keen interest in riparian systems. On that note, I think that offcuts could also be used effectively in the reservoir of pondless systems. I personally find the common practice/trend of having a beautiful set of waterfalls suddenly dropping onto and disappearing into a flat bed of gravel to be really jarring because it's something you'd never find in nature. Where as, if a bit of liner was placed in a bowl shape and covered in larger gravel, this could at least allow a final plunge/scour pool to form below the bottom falls when water's in motion, before disappearing into a gravel 'bar' and stream bed below. This is still a bit odd, but it's a more plausible feature you might find in nature.
    From my outsider observations, the water feature industry in general tends to hide the top of their systems pretty well, but I think that there's a lot of room for improvement in naturalising and creating a bit more mystery at the bottom. Just my two cents, but with your beautiful work and no bullshit approach, I think you're the man to help steer them in that direction.
    Keep up the good work, Cam

      That is great insight! I will push the team to try that on the next build. We will call it the "Cam Style" Reservoir!!

      @@KoiAddiction no worries John. Maybe call it the 'oxymoron reservoir', since it's a ponded pondless approach

    John that is a great idea to save on water loss which affects overall water flow and like you said less foam used but used more effectively. Love your ideas you share.

    I don't do this for a living and I'm too old to start, but these little tips you share are incredible for us DIY guys. The water in motion series was eye opening. It all happens in our little feature, but I never put a value to it or understood the why and how until you explained it. I'm collecting old milk crates to substitute for aqua blocks.This all started for me when I learned about aquaponics and the CHOP and CHOP 2 configurations. Every landscape is different and the layouts can't always be ideal, but the principles you teach are key to a practical design. I don't want to lose a lot of water if the pump is turned off. I'm still figuring it out and I thank you for the informative knowledge you share.

    love the videos. Doing my on DIY pond with tips from your channel. Id like to see more videos on plants. Where to plant certain things and what is safe to plant in pond. I fear roots growing through the liner.

    I think us DIY guys forget this tip. Carl from Columbia water gardens has a video where he use underlayment and filled it with sand and then melted the underlayment with the heat gun and then put the bib liner over top of it. What's your thoughts on that?

      @KoiAddiction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video and explanation! Question - I’ve done bibs with liner and also underlayment (I think I heard April say foam sticks better to it). Any reason to use one over the other?

    So the foam is more of a barrier than a sealant? 95% will go where you direct it to go, but that means 5% will still leak through. However, the main liner underneath will capture that leakage and it will eventually make its way back out to the main body of water? Did I hear you right on that? Seems like a solid way to avoid using 35 cans of foam, that's for sure.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep you got it! Foam is expensive and it is good use (re-purposing)

    Thanks John - great video. I was thinking about this very issue. I notice that you say it is for use around large boulders. Do you think for a DIY build where I'll be using smaller boulders (12 inch diameter boulders) that I could get away with this? Or would you recommend seaming together a scrap liner instead?

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If there is potential for water to sneak through or under, bib liner is good. Underlayment works well too. Whatever you need just try to “1 piece it”-many small pieces will seep and fail!

    How do you clean the gun part of that spray foam sprayer?

      I let it dry and scrape it with a razor knife!
